I am a beginner learning guitar.I use an acoustic guitar with steel
strings.I tune the giutar to standard E,B,G,D,A,E(strings 1 to 6)
using an electronic tuner. My question is that if I put the 5th string
in place of 4th string and tune it to D,will it be OK?I am doing this
because I have a surplus of 5th strings and am short of 4th.(The music
shop is too far from my place and i go to the city only once a week )

can someone tell me if it is ok to interchange strings like this?
thanks
harry

With this set up you could get the instrument to a playable state, but
the extra tension may not be good for the guitar if the strings are
heavy gauge ones and as a beginner it is probably best to stick the more
conventional string arrangement wherever possible otherwise the
unpredictable results may prove off-putting.

Perhaps buy a set of strings online and see if they deliver, Googling
'buy guitar strings' brings up loads of choices.
