Nick I heard it 2 times last week and the 2nd was me requesting it on KXGO-FM Eureka,Ca This is in the heart of the Redwood Empire approx. 300 mi. North of San Fransisco. The format is Classic Rock/ some Alt/ vintage prog. and mostly request-driven. The program director is a fan of the Gabriel era and loves Ray's voice. Now does anybody know how/when to purchase Congo and will there be bonus tracks not on CAS? The pop. is under 30,000. I hope this helps Genesis. After 6yrs. many have forgotten who they are. Peace, looking forward to hearing CAS.

I've heard it twice so far - once yesterday and once today in Binghamton, NY on 92.5 KGB. It sounds ok. I miss Phil though. I can't wait to hear what the rest of the album sounds like.
However I listened to the radio 2 or 3 times as long as usual during the last two days, skipping through all channels, they didn't play it until recently.. . That cruel creature of a dj announced Congo at 1 am and I had to wait for one hour to hear it! Up to now that was the only one.
It's difficult but not impossible to recognize this song as a Genesis song. I think Ray "X" Wilson's voice is not as extraordinary as Perter's or Phil's. No big experiments so far and the repetition of the refrain.. :-( . With this rater simple (and short) text, it could have been one of those numerous younger pop-bands. Not that it is bad, I felt somehow curious while listening but I hope it is not the masterpiece on CAS.
Certainly we'll see postings from people in this newsgroup that never looked at it before. I'm looking forward to CAS and also hope for lots of comments and impressions of the album here.
"YOU SAY THAT I PUT CHAINS ON YOU BUT I DON'T THINK THAT'S REALLY TRUE..." (Congo)
After listening on a station for six hours that promised me that they would eventually play "Congo", I have finally heard it. I think it sounds a little repetitive but all right. The big problem I have is that it clocks in at 3:11. I didn't hear the keyboard solo that's on the website, so the track must have been cut for radio. Is this just this one station doing it, or is there a radio edit that's out there.
I know that a lot of Genesis songs get cut a lot, like "No Son of Mine" which usually gets most of the second chorus and the woah-oh section cut out, and "Tonight X3" which gets the instrumental part cut out. Even after those cuts they were still pretty long songs for today's radio, but "Congo" is really short.

I feel the same way. I wish they didn't release Congo as their first song. Even a critic that I know from Rolling Stone magazine didn't like that song that much, but thought the ballads on the album were very strong. They should have released "Dividing Line" as their first 'rock-song' single. And their other choice "Shipwrecked" is another bad call. Perhaps the 2 worst songs from the album (my opinion) are Congo and Shipwrecked. I would have picked "Not about Us" which is a great song that could go either way..rock or pop. Or "Uncertain Weather".
-Calling all Stations (is alright. Heavy, but not much to the vocals. This could have been Ray's first recording with Genesis.)
-Congo (Nice heavy guitar, starts out like Biko with a tribe background..but ends pre-maturely and the chorus sounds gay)
-Shipwrecked (Lame. Starts out like Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here")
-Alien Afternoon (a favorite. Takes a while to get used to, but I love the powerful ending.)
-Not About Us (good guitar work. Mike finally pushes Tony aside..alittle)
-If That's What You Need (I think thats the title. Good song, but sounds alot like Mike and Mechs "Living Years" song)
-The Dividing Line (Pumped up Rock song. Very cool. Great Drumming. A good song to blast with alot of bass)
-Uncertain Weather (another Fav. Sounds alot like a song Peter Gabriel would sing. Ray even sounds like him)
-Small Talk (decent pop song.)
-There Must Be Some Other Way (Some people say this sounds like Home By The Sea..I don't see it at all. It sounds more like Fading Lights with the solo in the middle. Ray sounds like the singer from Whitesnake. Weird, but very good. 7+ minutes and took me some time to get used to)
-One Man's Dream (I hate the very opening to this song. I cringe when I hear it, but the rest of the song is good and gets better towards the end. This song is 8+ minutes I believe)
..well, there is MY opinion. It's a good album. I don't see any classics on this one, but some fine music. I hope Genesis gets the respect and success they are looking for. And then hopefully they will continue making albums.

I've now heard Congo, Shipwrecked and Not About Us. Of those three, Congo is certainly the best (to me it sounds like recent Genesis combined with recent PG, but I'm sure I'm pretty much alone in that opinion). Hardly a classic song, but beats all the singles from We Can't Dance as far as I'm concerned (and probably Driving the Last Snore too). Combined with the video, it reminds me of (cover your eyes) Duran Duran. Imagine Simon Le Bon's sultry whine on that perfect radio chorus.
Shipwrecked, as I posted earlier, keeps reminding me of "Savage" by Eurythmics. Not too great, not too Not About Us is pretty much a M&TM song, though the little Tony solo/break toward the end redeems it somewhat. Interesting that two out of the three singles I've heard start with a solo guitar. (For that matter, interesting that they released over half the album as radio promo material a month before the album hits.)

Unlike Chicago, the 401 corridor between Toronto and Ottawa has a multitude of classic rock stations. Making the trip over the last weekend, it seemed as though I was just missing 'Congo', but the DJs were giving it rave reviews in anticipation of the album release.
I caught a bit of the end of it.
I think the album will probably defy being pidgeon-holed.
Just what the band needed. A fresh start.
Looking forward to the cd and tour.

Did you try WXRT? Sure, they never play the same songs over and over again, as they keep saying <VBG>, but it seems to me I heard Congo a couple of times the last week. I was told 94.7 (that new version of WCKG, sort of) also was playing it, and possibly WTMX. Hey, any town with two classical stations isn't really all that bad... :-))

A sampler of 6 songs from "Calling All Stations" has been released to radio stations, and indeed the 3-minute version of "Congo" is listed as an "edit".
