Duran Duran
Favorite: Careless Memories
Duran Duran could make extremely well-made fast songs in their early
day, and this is one of them. Catchy and fun without actually trying
anything new.
Least Favorite: Girls On Film
No, it's not because it was a hit, it's hust because I don't think
the song's very well-structured, and it annoys me at times.
Rio
Favorite: New Religion
The double-Simon approach really WORKS. I also love the intro. It's
fun to imagine videos for this one, had the music industry actually been
smart and released this song.
Least Favorite: My Own Way
Still an amazing song -- it's just the least developed of a pack of
genius songs.
Seven And The Ragged Tiger
Favorite: New Moon On Monday
While I feel that the verses of the song are kinda dopey, the chorus
flows very well and makes up for it.
Least Favorite: Cracks In The Pavement
"Hey, boys! We need more than 5 strong songs if you wanna fill a
whole LP! And the release date is tomorrow!" "Uh oh."
Notorious
Favorite: Vertigo (Do The Demolition)
Good backing beat throughout the entire song. Although I must admit
I'm still having a bit of trouble distinguishing each song from onethe
others on this album.
Least Favorite: Skin Trade
It's okay within the context of the rest of the album, but as a
single, it's one of the worst pieces of crap they released as one.
Big Thing
Favorite: Do You Believe In Shame?
Just an all-around good song, with a strong melody and doesn't try to
be too "introspective" or some crap like that, unlike most of the rest
of the album.
Least Favorite: All She Wants Is
Maybe without the orgasm sounds I'd like it more. It DOES have a
really solid guitar tone. Dishonorable mentions go to the title track
and most of the entire second half of the album, which I have trouble
telling apart the songs on. "Drug" is decent, in my opinion, and
probably no one else's.
Liberty
Favorite: First Impression
While it starts with a sample and begins with Simon sounding way too
hopeful (sort of like Mick Jagger at the beginning of "Saint Of Me" --
oh wait, that song came 7 years later), once the guitar kicks in this is
one GREAT song.
Least Favorite: Hothead
Too many samples, and apparently Sterling Campbell and Warren wanted
Duran to sound "big and tough" or something. No thanks. Also, Violence
Of Summer is incredibly catchy, but my god, that's probably the
downright CHEESIEST song they've EVER put out.
Wedding Album
Favorite: Too Much Information
Incredibly powerful use of every instrument, including vocals. Also,
as it began the album, it made it clear that it was going to kick BUTT.
Least Favorite: To Whom It May Concern
Everyone complains about the last few tracks on the album, but this
is the only one of those three that I don't like. In fact, I absolutely
hate it. It's annoying and has no catchy melodies whatsoever.
Medazzaland
Favorite: Out Of My Mind
Along with Electric Barbarella, the only "normal" song on the album.
That's not bad, though. I also heavily enjoy the "scary" mood the song
sets.
Least Favorite: Silva Halo
Is it fair to pick a song like this as least favorite? It just
floats by without doing much at all, so I'm not sure if I'm allowed to
classify it as a "song."

I don't think they're stupid. I think it's interesting to see how other fans
feel about the music. To see how different/similar tastes are.
Here's mine:
Duran Duran:
Favorite: Night Boat (Tel Aviv VERY close 2nd)
Least: Girls on Film (Only because I HAVE to pick one)
Rio:
Favorite: Save a Prayer (Favorite song of all time)
Least: Rio (Only because they [still] over play it)
Seven:
Favorite: The Seventh Stranger (Beautiful song)
Least: Cracks in the Pavement (Although I like Seven, this one isn't quite up
to par)
Notorious:
Favorite: Winter Marches On (Another beautiful song)
Least: Skin Trade (Don't like Simon's high voice in this one)
Big Thing:
Favorite: Do You Believe in Shame? (Very soothing)
Least: All She Wants Is (Video turned me off the song)
Liberty:
Favorite: Serious (Love the chorus)
Least: Hothead (bleh, I really don't like this song)
Wedding Album:
Favorite: Come Undone (This came out the year I graduated)
Least: To Whom It May Concern (Sounds harsh. Not melodic like I'm used to
hearing from the guys.)
Thank You:
Favorite: Perfect Day (Yet another soothing song)
Least: Ball of Confusion (too obnoxious)
Medazzaland:
Favorite: Midnight Sun (This song makes me cry :~(
Least: Undergoing Treatment (another, really obnoxious song. Not that they
have a lot of obnoxious songs mind you.)
Besides Essentials, I think I got all of them.

_Notorious_
fav: very hard. Toss up between tracks 4/5/6/9/10
had to do with lyrics and what was going on to me at the time....
ugh!: 7/8
btw, who's the girl on the back of the album?
_Wedding_
fav: another hard one. track 2, with honors to 6/7/8/9
once again, lyrics and what was going on with me....
ugh!: /Shotgun/.
As for _Rio_, I'd have to go with prolly /Save A Prayer/. Sigh, one of the
best songs by any band. So nice.... _7_, prolly the last two ones. Like I
said, I've not played that tape enough to get a good idea. /A View To A
Kill/ is also a jolly good song.
One poster mentioned something about Def Leppard and DD...what was it?
FYI, the "Three D's" are my main music groups: Duran Duran, Depeche Mode
and Def Leppard (in inverse alpha order :-))

Duran Duran:
Favorite: Is There Something I Should Know
Yeah, I know this wasn't really on the first album, so it
shouldn't really count, but this single was what led
me to buy the first album. And by the time I got it, it
was on the album.
Least: Tel Aviv
Probably only because I love Simon's lyrics.
Rio:
Favorite: Last Chance on the Stairway
Purely for lyrical reasons. One of Simon's best.
Least: Hold Back the Rain
Never understood this song.
Seven:
Favorite: The Reflex
This is an incredibly cheesy reason, but the single was
just so popular, it kind of validated my musical taste.
Also
I got the album the day it was released and this was the
first song on the album, although Union of the Snake had
already been out for a little while.
Least: Shadows on your Side
Don't really dislike this song, just like it the least on
the album.
Notorious:
Favorite: Notorious
I still remember seeing myself in the mirror dancing to
this
song and realizing how stupid I looked.
Least: Can't pick one. I love every song on this album.
Big Thing:
Favorite: Do You Believe in Shame?
I hate to admit it, but when he sings "And it may seem
selfish
now..." I start to cry. There you are.
Least: Big Thing
Don't know why. I think because it reminded me of Def
Leppard.
And I can't explain why it does, but it does.
Liberty:
Favorite: My Antarctica
This was my favorite Duran song for a very long time.
Least: Hothead
I'm not saying this because everyone else did. It really
is the
worst thing they had done to this point. But the second
side
of this album is filled with turkeys.
Wedding Album:
Favorite: Shelter
Probably something to do with what was going on in my
life
when this album came out.
Least: Drowning Man
This song never quite clicked with me.
Medazzaland:
Favorite: Electric Barbarella
This wins by default. Actually, I quite liked it. After
hearing the
single, I had hoped the album would be like that.
Least: I'd say "every other song on the album", but I've not come
across anything else on this CD that qualifies as a
song.
Not only is this the worst Duran album, this may in fact
be
the worst CD that I own. To give you an idea of how much
I despise this CD, I don't keep it in my CD tower. In
fact,
I don't even know where it is. And I don't miss it.
I have a question about this. I may be remembering this incorrectly,
but I seem to recall that Simon once said that this song was the only
thing they had done that had ever embarassed him. Does anyone
know what I'm talking about and why he would have said that?

Matt
fave: Sound of Thunder (absolutely dancable even today - doing the new wave
dance, like the guy in the crowd in the Reflex vide...yeah! Woooo!)
worst: Not to be such a fan boy, but GOD, I can't think of any bad song on
that album. I guess if I had to choose....Is there something I should know, cuz
I've heard it way too much, but it's still a genius song.
Rio
fave: My Own Way (still dancing.....Weee! with my Nick Rhodes red headband and
parrot)
worst: Save a Prayer (I know I'll get killed for this one.....sorry, never
liked that song....I can hear the condemnations a comin)
Seven and the Ragged Tiger
fave: Take the Dice (Nick is a genius, pure and simple, and this is back when
Simon could hit and maintain ANY note)
worst: (Looking for) Cracks in the Pavement (again, a great song, just the
worst on an album of all great songs)
Have to include..... Arcadia
fave: Lady Ice (stunning, even now in 1999. Stark and gorgeous. Simon at his
absolute best, lyrically and vocally)
worst: Goodbye is Forever (not a bad song, I just heard it way too much and I
guess it hasn't aged as well as the rest of the album, kinda dinky.)
Notorious
best: American Science (Nick's gliding, atmospheric synth lines always send
shivers....the song to play on your concorde trip to New York from London)
worst: So Misled (ummm....a bit overdone in the oven of post production
tragedy.)
Big Thing
best: Palomino (the song everyone's forgotten , and also the best of their late
80's songs. The kind of love song that makes you just want to spread your arms
and sing at the top of your lungs into the wind. Yes, I'm a sap romantic 80's
casuality.)
worst: Big Thing (an attempt at readymade arena rock that fell flat on it's
face....cringe)
Liberty
best: My Antartica (brilliant love song, the out-of-place jewel on this album)
worst: just about every other song, basically. too harsh? Maybe.
"The Wedding Album"
best: Love Voodoo (slinky, sexy return to form.....amazing...I'm a sucker for
Simon and a good echo box....hehehehe)
worst: UHF (gak!....what's goin' on!)
Medazzaland
best: Medazzaland (surreal and unexpected...I swear it sounds just like Nick
instead of Simon on the spoken word vocals....don't believe me..listen again)
worst: any song other than the first three of four...wince!
Of course, my favorite remix had to have been "Burning the Ground."
Ahem....now, let's hear some more responses!
Gasp!! oh.. I'm wounded!!!
I can't imagine anyone not liking that song. I remember their last tour here
in Minnesota.... (queue reminisce music)... they played Save a Prayer, then
Wild Boys at the very end of the concert. I was still crying 1 1/2 hours after
the concert was over!! The clean up crew kept asking if I was ok!
It's been my all time favorite song since it first came out.
<snip>
>fave: Lady Ice (stunning, even now in 1999. Stark and gorgeous. Simon at his
>absolute best, lyrically and vocally)
I completely agree with you here. This is my 2nd fave song of all time! ;-)
That was me. I said that I didn't like the song Big Thing because it
reminded
me of Def Leppard, and I can't stand Def Leppard. Sorry.
Matt
No condemnations, but shock. I can't imagine anyone not liking
this song. To me, this is everyone at their best.
>Have to include..... Arcadia
>fave: Lady Ice (stunning, even now in 1999. Stark and gorgeous. Simon at

>worst: Goodbye is Forever (not a bad song, I just heard it way too much and

Ooh! You cheated! I didn't think to include Arcadia. My fave would be
The Promise. I guess least fave would be El Diablo.
>worst: Big Thing (an attempt at readymade arena rock that fell flat on it's
>face....cringe)
Glad to see I'm not the only one who felt this way.
>worst: UHF (gak!....what's goin' on!)
Well, first of all, the song is called UMF. And I'm guessing that if you've
never experienced one, you can't really appreciate the song.
>Of course, my favorite remix had to have been "Burning the Ground."
Burning the Ground rules, but I have to admit to a weakness for
Notoriousaurus Rex.
Matt
If I remember correctly, it is model Christy Turlington (spelling?). She was
also in the Notorious video.

It's on the Japanese import which also has a cooler booklet. But are you sure

I couldn't agree with you more! This is one song I can honestly say I hate.
It must be the heavy guitar sound.

I don't think it is that bad. Well, at least it's not any worse than the
average Medazzaland song.

I've always for some mysterious reason found Liberty to be one of their
best albums. I even like 'Hothead' even though I can see why it is being
regarded the worst by many. I find a track like 'First Impression'
brilliant. But I would have thought, that you would pick either 'Downtown'
or 'Read My Lips' as the worst track on the album. What's your opinion
about these?
But 'My Antarctica' is no doubt the best track on 'Liberty'.

A cooler booklet? To me it appears to be the same. Okay, they have included
the lyrics in japanese/english and an additional text in Japanese (anybody
got a translation - I'd like to read it), but the actual booklet appears to
be the same.

I think it's fun! Great fun, unlike the rest of it, which is wither
depressing, moody or very Kenny-Logginsish.
Other than this issue, we're pretty close! I need to listen to TWA
again.

Rio
Fav: Last Chance on the Stairway - Love the fretless bass.
Yeuch: My Own Way. Much prefer the nite version or the single.
Seven And The Ragged Tiger
fav: 7th Stranger - about the only one besides NMOM I can still listen to
Yeuch: Union of the Snake - too overworked. The whole album was overworked,
but they did make it here in Oz, so I can't help but hold a small soft spot
for it.
Arena
Fav: The whole B side (7th Stranger - Careless Memories) just a great mix of
live songs
Yeuch: They shouldn't have put Wild Boys on it. Spoiled the atmosphere.
Notorious
Fav: Winter Marches On - Another atmospheric one, akin to To The Shore
Yeuch: Skin Trade. Just don't like it anymore.
Big Thing
fav: Edge of America/Lake Shore Driving: Another great couple of songs
placed together strategically
yeuch: Drug. Too noisy
Liberty
fav: First Impression / All along the Water Dunno why, I just like these
two. Today that is...
yeuch: Hothead. Another noisy one.
Wedding Album
fav: The whole first half, right up to UMF. That is the best one, next to
the acoustic ver of Ordinary World.
yeuch: To Whom it May Concern. yadayadayada
Thank You
fav: Drive By. Such a sexy song!!!
yeuch: Crystal Ship - didn't like the original either.
Medazzaland
fav: So Long Suicide. Great drums
yeuch: silva halo. I always skip it. prolly haven't even really heard it
more than once!
Cheers

Sorta thought I was jibbed when one of the bonus tracks on Thank You was
Femme Fatale. Zact same as on Wedding Album!
I remember Roger saying that he hated it because when they recorded the
single version, they had to record him so many times, he was flat out
keeping up. They had to release it, ya know, deadlines, and pressures from
the record company, yadayadayada. Then they decided to rework it for the
Rio album, and again, like a few other songs, they just over worked it.
sometimes they do great stuff from reworking, like HOLD BACK THE RAIN, but
this just was not one of those good days. THE REFLEX was another case in
point. The amount of reworking Simon had to do just to do the "so
why-yi-yi-yi-yi don't you use it..." line - I have an interview of him in
'83 in Brisbane saying that he didn't like that song then.

Yup. It wasn't a fine wine, that one.
Should we do The Power Station as well???
fav: Lonely Tonight / Still in your Heart . Apart from the singles. These
two are pretty kewl
yeuch: murderess. Mebee it is just that Michael Des Barres at Live Aid put
me off this song... Or maybe it was just Michael...
It was Clea Simon from the Boston Phoenix, Nov 6-13 1997
and I quote:
"...More than LeBon's limited delivery, it's the songwriting on Medazzaland
that lets you down. The disc opens moderately well, with a
nice
butt-bouncing beat percolating along the title track. But
then nothing
happens. Where we want hooks, we get electronically altered
vocals,
expensive processing that makes the disconnected lyrics
sound cheap
and tinny and supposedly alienated. "Do I have any feeling
left?",
LeBon asks the '90s. "Do they really understand what's
wrong?" He
gets the cheap-and-tinny part right, at least. ..."
I Kinda got the feeling that she didn't like the album at all.
Azhure, you are amazing! Thanks for posting that.

You know I only post this stuff to get you out of lurk mode, don'tcha? :)
I listened to "Liberty" again the other night as well, just to make sure I
wasn't remembering stuff that wasn't on there. And, yep, I still love it.

I still don't hear the Kenny Loggins in it that you do, but you do have a
point about it being moody. But, to me, it's no more depressing than
Arcadia's album, which was also moody.
I just always thought VOS was cheezoid. It sounds like (to paraphrase Salieri
in "Amadeus") a rusty old squeeze box.
I think First Impression is great fun. I can't listen to it in the car
because it makes me drive very fast.

I know. I think The Liberty Issue <tm> will always be the wedge between us.
:D

I did that as well the other night, and every single time I do I love "Breath
After Breath" even more.
You do have a point.
Again I have to agree with you Uffe.
Have I said you have wonderful taste in music?
;-)
Aw shucks <blush>. I knew I kept that review for some reason!!! I guess I
was so narked off at her for even considering that it could be Simon!

Listen first to right when the guitar kicks in in the song "Danger
Zone" sometime. Then listen to right when the guitar kicks in on
"First Impression."
>But, to me, it's no more depressing than Arcadia's album, which was also moody.
Oof. Now wait. I didn't say I didn't like depressing music - I do -
and Arcadia's music is definitely depressing. I just don't like the
songs on Liberty, plain and simple.
There is a reason for this, and it's for precisely the same reason
that I *do* like Arcadia.
With the exception of maybe VOS, I think its pretty obvious Nick
Rhodes didn't write the songs on Liberty. He did write 'em for
Arcadia.
I like Nick.
As a matter of fact, I have always theorized that Warren wrote most of
"Liberty," and that that is precisely why I didn't like it. Since "Big
Thing," the band has let Warren write more stuff, and frankly, aside
from "Come Undone," I think he's had strike after strike. The songs I
like, from "Notorious" (where Warren stepped in) until NOW have all
been either very Nick-ish or John-ish. The other ones (mostly on
"Liberty" and a few on "TWA") with very few exceptions I haven't
liked.
I give you: "Hothead," and "Silva Halo" as the most extreme examples
of these. These resemble nothing.
>I just always thought VOS was cheezoid. It sounds like (to paraphrase Salieri
>in "Amadeus") a rusty old squeeze box.
It is. It's so bad - but I do still like it because it was breezy and
I was having a good summer that summer and it reminds me of happy
times.
>I think First Impression is great fun. I can't listen to it in the car
>because it makes me drive very fast.
Sorta like "Danger Zone," eh? -snicker-
I gotta be honest, I always liked that one too - but I always liked
"Danger Zone."
>I know. I think The Liberty Issue <tm> will always be the wedge between us.
Alas.

One thing I think we should keep in mind when picking faves and least-faves
is not whether you're SICK OF a particular song (e.g., RIO) but maybe your
reaction when you first heard it. Just because you're tired of a good song
doesn't make it bad. With that in mind, here are my picks for best & worst
...
>1st album:
>
>:) Girls On Film (best rhythm guitar lick ever!)
>:( Night Boat (builds to a nice climax but too much whooping & synth along the way)
>
>Rio:
>:) Hungry Like The Wolf (a tough choice; IMO this album is solid start to fin)
>:( none
>
>Seven:
>:) The Reflex (LP version!; close second is Cracks In The Pavement, despite
the dumb lyrics it has the catchiest chorus on
the album plus a great guitar solo)
>:( I Take The Dice (of the many really 'forced' songs on the LP, this is the worst)
>
>Arena:
>:) Wild Boys (Save A Prayer = best of live stuff)
>:( Hungry Like The Wolf (I don't care for ANY of the live cuts really but
this is the worst compared to its studio version
>
>Notorious:
>:) Notorious
>:( Hold Me (despite a good Nick solo)
>
>Big Thing:
>:) Too Late Marlene (to that point their classiest tune; a hint of what was
to come on LIBERTY)
>:( Big Thing
>
>Decade:
>:) A View To A Kill (natch)
>:( All She Wants Is (would have rather seen New Moon On Monday or Burning
The Ground in its place)
>
>Liberty:
>:) My Antarctica
>:( All Along The Water (ouch-an embarassing HUNGRY clone)
>
>Wedding Album:
>:) Come Undone
>:( Femme Fatale
>
>Thank You:
>:) White Lines (close second: the excellent Watching the Detectives)
>:( Lay Lady Lay
>
>Medazzaland:
>:) Electric Barbarella (like a swirling, hypnotic wet dream from 1981!)
>:( Who Do You Think You Are
>
>Night Versions:
>:) Is There Something I Should Know - Monster Mix
>:( Wild Boys - Wilder Mix (sloppy, tedious and too looooong)
