Gutted. Totally gutted. Feel like I just lost an older brother.

It's going to be a punk night in the house tonight, guaranteed.

Me too. Gutted doesn't really cover it - that man introduced me to just
about every band or artist I've ever seriously listened too.

RIP John

After years of waiting for a sensible reply to a Usenet post, the best
tomScotland could come up with is this:

I'm finding it hard to find the right words. He was more than just a DJ to
me [and you too I suspect] - and icon of his day - understated, and with
that slightly cynical sound to his voice. As my mate just said:

No other DJ would play German hardtechno gabba and nosebleed, fade it
out and say, "That was Schtinkinhisen on FU-USA Records, and now we
have a man from Orkney, his dog and his Guitar, he's only 16 and
recorded this in his bedroom. I thought I'd play it, because it has
got a certain quality to it."

Not a direct quote, but that last line just sounds so much like him I can
hear him saying it. Liverpool will be a sad place tonight, they do love a
wake up there ;-)

you go, one hero is sick, dead or whatever. peel on
bfbs was part of my musical education in the 80s.
think the first time i heard the bulgarian voices ever
was on a peel show. bloody coincidence i downloa-
ded his album for londons club fabric just recently.

From Channel 4's daily bulletin:

If you grew up during the last forty years and like music the chances are
you grew up learning about it with John Peel. So I have no doubt that the
news he has died after a heart attack in Peru will provoke a deep sadness
across several generations…..from psychedelia, to punk, to quintessential
middle Britain via Radio 4's Home Truths. Musicians, DJ's and fans have been
queuing up to describe his impact on music and broadcasting. We will be
trying to do him justice tonight. For my own part, if ever a day of
national mourning was justified, surely it was so for John Peel.

It's such a sad loss, and a massive blow to new music in the UK.

The end of our era.

Sounds like Scott Muni here in NYC who recently died. He was the main man on
the progressive free-form radio station WNEW-FM back in the 70s.
Like you wrote , he (and the other NEW jocks) introduced me to every band or
artist I've ever seriously listened to. When I heard at work that he died (and
I know he had been ill from a stroke) it hit me hard.
RIP Scott and John and THANKS.

See there was a quote from "Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant" in the Daily
Mail today ....

"From my earliest recollections, John Pee championed and gave life to such a
vivid and dynamic variety of Music. His uniqueness was reflected in his
continued popularity over four decades"
