"Artist and retired teacher Dan Fogelberg of Longmont attended with his
wife and son to honor the two strangers who saved his life in May.
Fogelberg had a sudden heart attack while cycling just north of Nelson
Road on 65th Street.
łI was basically dead on the ground,˛ said Fogelberg, 58, who does not
recall the incident and has problems now with his short term memory.
Gilbert Duran, a foreman who was driving by, and passing cyclist Jon
Tarkington both stopped and discovered Fogelberg not breathing and
without a pulse. They administered CPR for 14 minutes until emergency
personnel arrived.
Said Tarkington of his award: łItąs strange. I feel honored and at the
same time itąs reaffirming that the emergency medical services works and
works well.˛
łIt was an emotional experience,˛ Fogelberg said of his first meetings
earlier this year with the two men łwho made the difference between life
and death for me.˛
łThere isnąt anything bigger than someone giving you your life back,˛ he
said. łI owe them everything.˛
łI find myself humbled,˛ Duran said. łI think itąs beautiful that the
county takes the time to recognize what happens within the community
limits when a lot of things go unnoticed.˛
