the Rome Italy soundboard bootleg from (circa 92) is better than the
second disc, the remastering work work on August is actually worse
than the original... the bonus songs are the sweet part here, but $30
for a handful of bonus songs? I regret buying this set.
2. Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings? Ok, so we don't know much
yet... but Cowboys leaked and uh, how to put this nice, of what the
fuck I can't put it nice... Cowboys sucks. Where is the melody? The
lyrics are written more in conversation form, there's meaning, but no
depth. Depth comes from generalized, abstracted lyrics. Yeah I know
what THEY teach you and THEY are full of shit. The proof is in the
pudding and the pudding is what draws in an audience and that's these
deeply emotional songs that are abstracted enough so that they can
have meaning for a lot of people... When that's delivered with
emotion, crafty rhyming schemes and clever hooks you end up with an
album like August & Everything After.
Whatever Cowboys is, it is definately not a commerical viable song. I
would go so far as to say it's a very self-absorbed (and in that
regard, even perhaps shallow) song.
Adam is a genius when it comes to songwriting (sometimes). Like all
brilliant songswriters he's hit and miss and Cowboys is a miss to me.
On the positive side it looks like we're getting 1492 and we're
getting it produced by Gil Norton. First time I heard this song back
when a live version leaked during the Hard Candy sessions I
immediately throught: how is Steve Lillywhite going to do this
justice. I secretly envisioned Gil producing this track and it
appearing on their second CD (for those who don't know, Gil Norton who
is producing the bands upcoming album also produced their 2nd CD,
Recovering the Satellites)

I tried to buy the 2-disc AAEA but my local Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Sam
Goody aren't carrying it. After thinking about it for awhile I
realized I only wanted 3 tracks off of it and so I bought those tracks
as well as some others on a custom cd from Wal-Mart.com. Haven't got
them yet. I have the MFSL release of AAEA and wasn't anxious to buy
it again, and after hearing your comments on the mastering I'm glad I
couldn't find it.

So I heard another leaked track from the quiter side of the disc
(Sunday Mornings) "Come Around", it's worse than Cowboys. The only
thing good about Cowboys is Gil Nortons production and that whole raw,
loud vibe he does so well (Recovering The Satellites). The problem
isn't exactly the songs, it's Adam, he sounds tired, he sounds like
he's trying too hard to go back there... trying to avoid the perfect
rhythm opportunity, trying to please his songwriting peers who often
go from brilliant to crap and back again themselves (e.g. Ryan Adams)
