Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings : Initial Impressions

So as per usual NO ONE seems to be around here.
But I am still alive and kicking and got the new album through the
post yesterday and have been trying hard to give it the time I used to
give music but alas I am working my ass off (you know, no longer a
student of leisure!).
First impressions are I like parts of it but feel the Crows no longer
resonate the way they once did. Maybe it is them changing, me changing
or both. I don't like this fact because I remember how important this
band were to me.
Los Angeles and Cowboys are amazing, but I find it quite telling that
my favourite song on the CD is Baby, I'm A Big Star Now!
Any way, let me know what you all think. When they come to the UK are
we gonna see them?!?

I've listened to the album once through only, and here are my initial
impressions...
I do not like the "Saturday Nights" part, but that's no surprise as
I've never been as big a fan of the hard stuff. That being said,
"Cowboys" is my favourite on that part with "Insignificant" about a
half star behind.
Sunday Mornings is more my speed, but some of the songs are more
depressing than usually. That being said, I really like "On A Tuesday
in Amsterdam" as well as "Washington Square", "On Almost Any Sunday
Morning" and "When I Dream of Michelangelo". I'm not quite sure about
"Le Ballet D'Or" but I could see myself coming around on it.
Worst song on the album by far is "Anyone But You."
So if I had to rank them based on ONE listen (I reserve the right to
change my rankings), here is what I would come up with:
On A Tuesday in Amsterdam | 4 stars
Washington Square | 4 stars
On Almost Any Sunday Morning | 4 stars
When I Dream of Michelangelo | 4 stars
Cowboys | 4 stars
Insignificant | 3.5 stars
REST (Le Ballet D'Or - sleeper)
Anyone But You | 2 stars

I'm here three. :-> I've been listening to the album off and on for
a week or so, and while there are bright spots, I don't feel it has the
cohesiveness of the other albums - it seems to stylistically jump around way
too much to have an overall flow. That said, I definitely feel like I prefer
Saturday Nights to Sunday Mornings; as a couple other people have said, despite
the kind of silly lyrics, "Hanging Tree" is definitely my favorite track.
"1492", "Los Angeles", "Cowboys" and "Come Around" are close behind on my
favorites list, and "You Can't Count On Me" and "Le Ballet D'Or" are OK, but
(disappointingly) the rest are just kind of forgettable. I'm also disappointed
that we didn't get "Baby I'm A Big Star Now" on this side of the pond, but
oh well, if I really want to listen to it it's on my vinyl TDL. :->

love it. I think Los Angeles is an amazing track. Looking forward to hearing
the Sunday bit although I have always prefered their heavier stuff. Cracking
choice for a bonus track as well, always been one of my favourites.

Toby, didn't notice Ehud listed in the liner notes until I read your
review. Nice to see.
Not too sure on the album. About five exceptional songs, but doesn't
compare to my own personal enjoyment of their first three. This is not
to say I want the Crows to sound like they once did. On the contrary,
I want them to change, to evolve.
Any way, will hope to catch them when they come to the UK.
