The Travesties

If you like loud frantic music, but you're sick of all the post-hardcore
posturing, then this is the show for you. Hazerai are fast and screamy,
but they're more paranoia than pose. The Grappling Hook are just plain
fucking nuts: gtr/bass doubleneck, organ/synth, crackerjack drummer, and
the Torch Marauder out front belting out semi-operatic spacerock epics
about conquistadors and shit.
Also on the bill, the Durham debut of The Travesties, featuring 3/5ths
of the original Jett Rink (yes, including Viva), as well as one of the
greatest rock drummers in the state, Chuck Garrison.

The Backwaits
CCB Plaza (aka The Bull's Balls), Durham
The City of Durham regularly sponsors shows at the somewhat mysterious
CCB Plaza (as part of the downtown refurbishing, they really seemed to
want to make it the new heart of Durham, but the proportions are screwy,
and their first move was to bulldoze the tiny tree-lined parking lot
that used to be there, and replace it with thousands of bricks, so it's
kind of the Death Valley of Durham at this point . . . and don't even
get me started on the emphatically anatomically correct statue of Major
The Bull).
This show coincides with the Third Friday art walk & etc, so you can
check out the Foster St. gallery axis & hear some homegrown cranky
indie-rock from the Dry Heathens at more or less the same time.

series of outdoor shows at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, featuring a wide
range of NC-connected groups. Tonight it's Portastatic; future shows
include Bowerbirds & Les Savy Fav, but also eastern-NC brother-harmony
country, western-NC Sacred Steel, oldschool black a-capella gospel, and
the Madison Elites, Durham representatives of the United House of Prayer
for All People Shout Band tradition.
Shows start at 7:00, and all but the Les Savy Fav are at Duke Gardens on
Sunday evenings throughout the summer.
