Since the weather's warmed up, my wife and I have opened the windows.
It's not quite AC weather yet. During the early sleeping hours, 3-4am
or so, I've noticed a sound coming from the woods that starts off kind
of like an owl "Hoo-Hoo", and then it evolves to a monkey sound
"Aaah-Aaah-Aaah". The total sounds like
"Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoaah-Hwaah-Ahh-Ahh-Ahh". And then other owl-monkeys join
in. I thought maybe it's deer, but people I've asked seem to think
deer just grunt. I'm confused. I noticed it last year, but I wasn't
sure if I was the only one who heard it. Does anyone know what animal
this sound originates?

Mike what you're hearing is definitely an owl.

And it's definitely *not* a screech owl. They have
quite a distinctive, somewhat disturbing sound.

I think what you're hearing is the hoot owl:

Depending, of course, on your level of superstition, I
would not recommend engaging it in conversation.
Listening and contemplating otoh is fine.

Building upon my owl theory, I offer you a page with
comparative sound links:

http://www.enature.com/audio/audio_hitlist.asp?familyID=241

there are other bird sounds within that site, as well,
for those who want to explore.

E.
I suspect it's likely a variation of the Barred Owl,
i.e. "hoot."

Mike-
What you describe, perfectly, is congregating great horned owls.
I've witness this event for more than 10 straight years. These Owls
will come back to that exact spot every year probably. I once even got
out of bed and went outside at 3am to see if I could see them. And yes
I could...maybe five. I could see them in the tops of the trees. It
was actually kinda scarey because they are pretty large and the horns
give them a very distinct presents.
One question I have however? I'm in NJ and you being in NC...it seems
rather later for this to happen.
We get them in very early spring or even late winter.
?Oh Well.. maybe it is monkeys after all?

I dunno... doesn't sound like any of those. On an owl to monkey ratio,
it definitely leans more to the side of the monkey. Maybe 20/80. I'm
baffled, but it's almost AC time, which will render it a non-issue...
For now!

Are owls really as wise as their reputation?

Ya don't suppose it's a peacock, then?

I always thought it was funny how they used peacock
calls to = jungle in old movies, because I met my
first peacocks before I could focus on TV, and so for
me, peacocks = old country farms.

E.

I still think it's probably a Barred Owl with a call
variant, if it's starting whith a real "hoo" sound.

(You haven't seen one of those Archies Jughead style
hats in the vicinity have ya? ...heavens forbid it's
the goobergomer owl, afterall...)

Ah...the courtships of spring!

I've heard these Barred owls hoot at night, too. It's a *startling* but
wonderful experience. Especially when you think you live in the city.

Well, honestly it's been a few weeks since I've heard it. It is right
at the time when the weather warms up enough to open up the windows.
Most prominent in early-mid April. It always happens when I'm in such
a sleep coma, so the sounds are quite surreal. Similar in that way to
a frog pond in the middle of the night. My wife didn't believe me,
until she gave me permission to wake her up when the sounds happened.
We decided to record it, but yes they've seemed to go away for now.
Maybe next year.

I know for a fact the Rosebuds have big owls in a
tree in their backyard. And those owls have yet to
prove they can be entrusted to guard Ivan's nectarine
tree. Ivan has promised to chain a dog to that tree
this summer so there's no repeat of those mangy
raggamuffin kids taking his nectarines like they did
last summer (welcome to Dennis the Menace and Mr.
Wilson's street).

You know, I think this is it!! I did actually hear them again last
night (with the window closed!). But it sounds like there are more
than two.

I think now I can safely say I'm hearing owls as opposed to Owl
Monkeys.
