Probably owl monkeys, probably the two headed variety pictured on this page:

And it's definitely *not* a screech owl. They have
quite a distinctive, somewhat disturbing sound.
I think what you're hearing is the hoot owl:

Depending, of course, on your level of superstition, I
would not recommend engaging it in conversation.
Listening and contemplating otoh is fine.

there are other bird sounds within that site, as well,

I suspect it's likely a variation of the Barred Owl,
i.e. "hoot."

I always thought it was funny how they used peacock
calls to = jungle in old movies, because I met my
first peacocks before I could focus on TV, and so for
me, peacocks = old country farms.

I still think it's probably a Barred Owl with a call
variant, if it's starting whith a real "hoo" sound.
(You haven't seen one of those Archies Jughead style
hats in the vicinity have ya? ...heavens forbid it's
the goobergomer owl, afterall...)

I've heard these Barred owls hoot at night, too. It's a *startling* but
wonderful experience. Especially when you think you live in the city.

I know for a fact the Rosebuds have big owls in a
tree in their backyard. And those owls have yet to
prove they can be entrusted to guard Ivan's nectarine
tree. Ivan has promised to chain a dog to that tree
this summer so there's no repeat of those mangy
raggamuffin kids taking his nectarines like they did
last summer (welcome to Dennis the Menace and Mr.
Wilson's street).

I think now I can safely say I'm hearing owls as opposed to Owl
Monkeys.
