Putting the cart before the horse?
John Riley is a centuries old ballad which has been performed by many
folkies.
I myself played it in clubs in the early sixties. Joan recorded it at about
the same time.
Plane Wreck at Los Gatos was written in the forties. It too has been covered
by many folkies,
including Judy Henske, Cisco Houston and the Kingston Trio.
Perhaps the best known cover is by Judy Collins, who recorded it in 1963.
Her lead guitarist was a Mr. McGuinn.
Joan and Roger are friends -- never an "item."

Not even close to Joan Baez.... and not even close to the BYRDS
version.
I absolutely love Roger's vocals and Clarence's guitar work on that
track.
What a classic!
