Woodstock 40yr Celebrations

This summer marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock!

I'm working a celebration show here in Orlando, and we discussed the
fact that many people are touring, or simply traveling this summer.
One idea we have is to put together a list of Woodstock celebration
shows - thus:

Woodstock40yr.Blogspot.com

If you're interested in going to a show, check out the list.

More importantly, LET ME KNOW ABOUT SHOWS IN YOUR AREA!
Please, this only works with help from the community.
Bump this post when you can, and send me any info you have.

Send info to: Woodstock40yr AT gmail.com

Thanks all - have a great summer!

McGuinn in Holland!

Finally we catched him live in Holland yesterday. It was so amazing.. on
row 3 in front of the master. His voice was remarkable good, energetic.
On records these days it sounds a bit all to compressed and obligatoire,
but the live performance was really great and powerful

My wife (I had to explain to her to whom we were going) made some nice
little movies (look at nebelhorn66 on youtube to get an impression).

And today I feel so bad selling my Rick 12 string some years ago...

Thanks for posting the videos. Roger will always be the master of the
Ric. It is fun hearing him play that and the 7 string and acoustic 12
as well. However, I cannot agree with your assessment of his vocals
or the energy level of his performances at his age. Like many other
aging artists, his best days have long passed.
Years ago, Roger got the idea from somebody that he needed voice
lessons. He has never sounded like his old Byrds self since. The vocal
lessons emasculated his vocals, smoothing out all the rough edges and
nasal quality of the original McGuinn voice. Meanwhile, Tom Petty made
a lot of money imitating Roger's original voice.
Roger's voice was at its best on the Byrds albums. His signature lead
vocals on Byrds albums including the later ones like Ballad of Easy
Rider could not be improved on. I will never understand why he was
told he needed to sing higher and smoother and change a unique voice
that many of his fans had learned to love. chagie

Did not know that. That explains the relatively high(er) pitch of his
voice. Maybe this is a form of survival for his abality to go on
singing... . Would be interesting to know his motivations..

I agree that ths sound is 'not what it was' but to my ears it's still
recognizable. Compared to f.i. Paul Mccartney who has lost his voice I
think he sounds much better.

And sometimes voices improve over the years.. Richard Thompson sounded
not that good when young while nowadays he sounds terriffic.

We have to cope with the fact that non of our old bands/artists we loved
in het 60th/70th still sound 'as then'. We have to adapt our expectations :)

That is a very sensible way of looking at it.
You are right about Roger's voice seeming higher and smoother, because
it is.
I imagine that for those who were not fans of Roger is his prime, they
might even like his mellowed vocal style better.
Still, he plays the Rick and his guitars like a master, and that is
the reason why most people go to see him.
