James Gurley, former guitarist of Big Brother and the Holding Company,
the psychedelic blues rock band from San Francisco who assisted Janis
Joplin on her meteoric rise to fame in the late 60's has passed away
from a heart attack December 20th at the age of 69. He was two days
shy of his 70th birthday.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on December 22, 1939, Gurley took up the
guitar at the age of nineteen, practicing long hours listening to
blues, particularly fond of bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins. In 1962, he
moved to San Francisco and became part of the coffee-house circuit,
playing in the folk and country blues tradition.

In the summer of 1965, legendary promoter Chet Helms brought James to
1090 Page Street to meet Peter Albin and Sam Andrew of Big Brother and
the Holding Company, and shortly thereafter, he joined the band. In
June of 1966, Joplin joined the band, and soon aftwerwards she and
Gurley began a short lived affair.

Country Joe & The Fish lead guitarist Barry Melton called Gurley "the
Yuri Gagarin of rock & roll - the first man in space." Melton added
"there was only a handful of us that created our mini-genre of
psychedelic guitar, and James was the avatar who blazed the path for
the rest of us."

James Gurley died in a hospital in Palm Springs, California.

Sorry to hear that.
I'd always thought Melton or Garcia had created that San Francisco
psychedelic guitar sound, but I stand corrected.

Well, the band did continue on without her, using singers like Nick
Gravenites and Kathi McDonald. But they really weren't that fabulous a band.
They were good, but probably never would have gotten where they did without
Pearl.

I agree that a little Janis could go a long way, but what made her special
was that she put 100% into each performance, a quality we seem to see very
little of these days. In fact I'm not so sure one could call them
"performances"; I think it was more real than performed. She "bared her
soul", as they say.

Now Nutella cross posts to the Limbaugh board. But it's about what I'd
expect from a friend of Chuckie (Postal) Pearson.

Nutella lives up to his name. The whole place has gone to hell in a
handcart. Although I did have a good chuckle last week when I qouted Joni
Mitchel to Evolution (resident expert on feminism) and she thought it was
Bruce Springsteen.

Yeah, I caught that. And it reminded me that when Joni Mitchell was popular
(early to mid-70's) is when lots of guys our age learned all about feminism.
Evolution acts like it's something new that we need to learn about.

Yeah, Nutella's OK, he's just nutty.

Evolution has PLC. (Perpetual Lecturer's Complex).

I loved how she took the sport fucking bait, LMAO. I knew she'd grab it,
but man, she clamped down like a bass on a frog.

I don't know what's funnier, her not knowing the first fucking thing about

people who actually have sexual options (sadly, that ain't any of us, LOL)

that particular subject. Makes Longyard seem like a saint in comparison.

I'm not a big fan (though I like their 2 most popular albums), but I watched
Bobo and Edge on the Elvis Costello show the other night. I like that Edge
fellow, a few times after Bobo spoke Edge seemed downright embarrassed.

Vashti Bunyan, LOL!

Musicaner! The Pearl Jam fan tend towards musicological isolation! They
like Pearl Jam and more Pearl Jam with their Pearl Jam. Maybe some Red Hot
Chilli Pepper on the side to sprinkle on the Pearl Jam.

Sometimes they like some Pearl Jam associated bands. This mean the ones
that open for the Pearl Jam concert, like that Idlewild. I give credit to
the Pearl Jam singer, he tries to edukate 'em on the musicological
influences but it's a NO GO! Other than Neil Young and The Who they
stickin' pretty close to Pearl Jam ONLY! Best not venture far afield!

I never forget one of 'em wimin Pearl Jammers posting ain't no way "some
album called Astral Weeks" could be all that influential (like Rolling Stone
article insist) because she was up TO SPEED on all things musicalogical and
she ain't never heard of no album called Astral Weeks!

Nah. Eddie was Bonoesque back innaday. STRIDENT! WANTED TO DO THE RIGHT
THING! NO GROUPIES ALLOWED!!! Can you imagine? You do everything to get
inna rock band and the singer say you cain't have your daily dick suck after
the show? That would blow! Imagine there's no groupies. It isn't hard to

Whereas Bono still Bono.

I think it's "Jeremy spoke in," not "spoken". As in "Jeremy spoke

But don't quote me on that 'cause I *have* heard of Astral Weeks.

Yeah, but I think he only shot himself, not the rest of 'em. That the way
to go for the disaffected youth. They shoot themselves we make a video of
'em. They shoot others and we don't. I may have to run on that platform.

Most of the arrogant snob clique phoneys have moved on to Facebook or some
such place where it's tougher to find (and who in their right mind would
want to?). Easier to keep us riff-raff away. They done moved from the
neighborhood bar to the country club lounge.

Burt-for what it's worth, there was a fairly large exodus around
2002/2003 to a private group that qualifies/qualified (I don't know if
it still exists) far more as a country club that Facebook does. To
me, RMAS could be the greatest Wild West bar, where you never know who
you'll run into or meet, fall in love with or punch out, laugh with,
learn from-but that's the ideal, not the real. Overall, there needs
to be a lot more Live and Let Live attitude than certain people can
tolerate, for it to flourish. Facebook is a ghetto of sorts-a safe
quarantine, but that adjective is something a lot of people need more
than a little of, including me.

imo,

I don't know nothing about no Facebook. Ain't been on it. Although more &
more business people are using it nowadays and seems like every day more
people insisting you gotta follow this or that MATTER OF EXTREEEEME IMPORT
on the "social networks" like Facebook and Twitter. The whole thing seem a
little nuts to me, but I suppose anohter 6 months and I'll be forced to sign
up or get LEFT BEHIND! I'm hoping I retire before that happen.

on Facebook? Yes-tho each person can set their privacy (within some
limits) as open or closed as they wish. Everything you share there
can be viewed by anyone or by no one, but the bottom line is that
there is control-whereas here on usenet, generally, what you share is
visible to anyone.

There are things I like a lot about Facebook, but as a medium for
discussions among a wide range of people over a longer period of time
without the visitor/guest mentality that's a reality on FB-nothing
beats usenet, imo. If people can manage to put up with (or better
yet, just ignore when necessary) a diverse range of ideas, attitudes,
and idiosynchrosies (sp?). But that's a rarity, anywhere that humans
mingle, from what I've seen.

I kinda see that as the whole point of posting on usenet; listening
to/reading/contributing diverse points of view. Otherwise, if it's all one's
pals, doesn't it have the potential problem of just becoming kind of a
"circle jerk"?

Seem like that Facebook thing cuts out diversity of opinion, sort of a
commy community if you know what what I mean. Me, I enjoy the little
spats from time to time, pretty boring if everyone agrees on the same
subject!

Circle jerk? lol, sounding downright Rev-like there Burt! (just don't
start up on nailin palin, ok?) I agree-that is the beauty of usenet-
the potential for a wide discussion. But it's only a potential, so
for people who don't need or want the wider discussion that much, or
who find the downsides of it repelling-Facebook is sufficient, and
better if you're looking for a space that's less abrasive and filled
with people who (more or less, hopefully) like you.

to be blunt tho-if circle jerks aren't what you're looking for-what's
with this place (a.m.b.s.)? It's basically the same 3 or 4 people,
who all like and respect each other, and only disagree on mostly taste-
neutral subjects. It's not that welcoming here to the outsider, esp.
if they ever read the consistent criticism of RMAS and specific
individuals. I've posted here often and been totally ignored. (which
may well have been because I was just the most boring person in the
room, I'll acknowledge that.)

and-how does expending large quantities of time and psychic energy to
re-educating or harranging certain regular posters on RMAS create a
more open atmosphere for discussion? Has anyone's thinking been
altered by that approach? How many good topics have layed fallow
while energy was emptied into the same sparring matches with the same
people as occured 5 years ago? How many people got the message that
if they voiced an opinion too far off the straight and narrow that
they'd be given the not so subtle hint to get lost, so therefore
didn't bother to voice their thoughts? What would RMAS look like if
enough people had the self control to ignore people they think are
wrong/crazy/stupid, and instead put their effort into making it a more
interesting, stimulating place?

I wonder, but I think I'm in the minority-many have just given up and
gone off to the splendid isolation of Facebook or a private group, and
enough think they somehow need to control who hangs out where and what
does and doesn't get discussed.

circle jerk indeed.

Good post. Make me wonder, where would Warren Zevon choose to hang his hat?

However, I could make the same argument about certain subject matters being
just as much an energy drain as certain posters. In the end we all have our
reasons for going here or there, or not going anywhere.

I'll continue to check out both newsgroups as long as they're around, and
will prolly continue to engage in the almighty online spat from time to
time, especially with certain posters.

As for the private newsgroup thang, been there done that, those places are
too polite for my blood.

Damn, I knew you were gonna say that! Simply untrue.
This place is totally public, it's usenet. Nobody is kept out of this place.
They choose not to stay. Many people read, but would never admit it; it's
very uncool on RMAS to admit you think Musicaner is funny, or whatever.
We're considered "the loonies".

" It's not that welcoming here to the outsider, esp.
if they ever read the consistent criticism of RMAS and specific
individuals."

Nah. Those criticized are the people who wouldn't "lower" themselves to stay
here anyway. The people who tried their best to villify (sp?) Musicaner and
Ms. Mystic and Jeff when they were on RMAS. The in crowd; I think you know
the group.

" I've posted here often and been totally ignored. (which
may well have been because I was just the most boring person in the

Huh? I certainly don't ignore you. Here if somebody doesn't respond, it's
probably because they have nothing to say on the particular subject (I mean
shit, there's only 4 of us!). If you're ignored on RMAS, what with all the
many people who could respond, it's usually because you don't fit in with
the powers that be; you become a pariah.
I come here because there's a chance somebody might respond to my posts (the
snobbery factor doesn't exist here), and because there's actually a larger
percentage of music discussed than over there.

"and-how does expending large quantities of time and psychic energy to

Yep, you gotta have guts and tolerance and a little crazy in you to post on
usenet. I'm too fucking stubborn to let those bastards break my spirit, but
I can see how many would simply give up.

"I wonder, but I think I'm in the minority-many have just given up and

As bad as the usenet groups can be, the private groups are worse, at least
the one I tried. Diverse opinions were not welcome, and if the leader didn't
like you, you were gone. Hopefully Facebook and the like aren't quite as
exclusive. But I have my doubts. I see exclusive as a negative term, not a
positive.
