They are standard cds that basically contain a mpeg file. They are
playable in video cd players and some types of dvd players.

You can play it on your pc with your cd-rom drive. Many DVD players
also will play vcds with excellent results.
About what? What is the point of your post?
Is there talk, or is there action? If anyone knows for sure of action
taken against someone, please let me know!
Why would some one:
1) Want to get a second rate copy of something that is only going to be
released on video and DVD in the near future? (I'm betting on just in time
for x-mas)
2) Go up against a control freak like Lucas? Look at the demands he put on
the theatres...don't you think he'd be looking closely at pirating? The risk
doesn't seem worth it!
But these are just my opinions but I can see the thrill of having a bootleg
copy of Phantom Menace while it's still in the theatre. I just wouldn't
publish the fact in an open forum like this.

OBVIOUSLY people are interested in the cam copy because there are posts ALL
OVER this newsgroup for it. So obviously someone wants it. And i really doubt
it will be here before xmas.
<<<2) Go up against a control freak like Lucas? Look at the demands he put on

Actually i dont think he is actually doing anything about it. They send a cease
and desist letter to you and thats it. If you are a major distributor then im
sure they will hassle you. But someone jsut trading here probably wont get a
hassle.
<<But these are just my opinions but I can see the thrill of having a bootleg

That i agree with. Jus tbe careful, but dont get over paranoid.
Well, Lucas announced recently that he's not putting out any Star Wars dvds
until 2006 or so, when all 6 movies have been released so he can make a big
dvd release with all of them together. Not sure about VHS tapes, but some
movies take a while on those too, look at ET.
Anyhoo, I agree with you about this being kinda risky talking about how people
have the cd already and are selling it, then again, I read about it going on
in Russia and China all the time and no one seems to mind. If I ever bought
the disc, it wouldn't detract me from seeing it in the theater anymore. I
know I'm going to see at a couple more times anyway. After if went out of the
theater is when I would put the disc to use.

I'd read that The Phantom Menace was going to be released on DVD date & date
with the VHS rental release in the USA in October.
But you're right that they seem to be dragging their feet on getting the
first three out.
As to the demand for the camcorder recorded version, I wouldn't have it but
someone did steal the actual film reels from one cinema (can't remember
where exactly) so I guess you can expect a very good copy indeed to start
doing the rounds.

Those people, as far as I know, lost their nerve and returned the
reel.
It is.

I guess you and I have different definitions of "near future". I don't
call 7 months near future. For a movie I really like, that to me is
eternity.

These may have come from the print that was stolen (and later
returned).

Maybe on VHS by Christmas but definitely not DVD.
I know what you mean though, I never could understand why there was a
demand for second rate copies of current in-theater movies (this
Phantom Menace copy looks to be different than the average VCD that
was done by a camcorder in a theater).

After a month or close to that.. what they did with it in between is
anybody's guess but rumor has it that a lot of high quality bootleg
VHS tapes surfaced shortly after that print was stolen.

No way in hell Phantom Menace will be on DVD for x-mas, but 2006? With
HDTV
coming there may not be DVDs in 2006, as the picture quality on DVDs is
far
inferior to HDTV. I'd bet its going to be sooner, and that PM will be on
VHS
by x-mas. Yeah, E.T. took a LONG time to hit VHS, but many movies of the
80s
were the same way. Most movies today hit video 6 months or so after
being
released with the occasional exception for boxoffice mega-blockbusters
like
Titanic which took nearly a year or Jurassic Park which was over a year
.

Its actually not that risky. Don't you own copies of movies and discs
and even
audio tapes in your house? You run about the same risk getting busted
for them,
or for taping your favorite TV show as you do posting here that you want
to sell
a Phantom Menace VCD or VHS.
Despite Lucas' vow to crack down on piracy, whats he really going to
do? If you
set up a MAJOR operation you might get busted, but barring that the
worst you
can expect is that you'll be threatened with legal action, and even
thats not
very likely.
Matt
I heard Spring 2000 for video, but both Spring 2000 & Nov-2000 make sense.
The video release will be a stop-gap to tide people over & build up
anticipation for Episode II in 2001(?).
Dave
So they had it from Saturday night to Wednesday afternoon when they
turned
themselves in. It was also reported by several residents that they had
received calls at their homes from someone offering to sell them the
actual
film, so I would hardly call these guys sophisticated bootleggers.
Matt
Doubtful that it will play that long, but the November 2000 date was
the
one given last week as the approximate time that the FOX Network will
air
The Phantom Menace, it is NOT the video release date.
We'll have it in the U.S. by Thanksgiving of THIS year.

Nope, Lucas said 2005 or 2006 and it's all over the internet andthe media.
Well, it was when it was announced. Ask anyone on alt.video.dvd, just be
prepared to get flamed because we're really sick about talking about it.
Lucas wants to wait for all 6 movies to be done and then put them all out
together so he can put all these extras on them. A lot of people think this
is just a way for the people who like the first 3 or the second 3 only to have
to buy them all. Another thing, I believe Lucas also said that Eps 4-6 will
be the Special Edition versions on these DVDs. So, I guess there will never
be a dvd release of the originals which really sucks.

OK, I know for a fact that owning movies, dvds and audio is tapes is not
illegal. Unless you mean copies and not the originals. And there was a court
case in the 80's about taping TV programs which was found totally legal. It's
called the Betamax decision or something like that.
actually no, a special effects guy was interviewed in a british magazine
(don't know who, don't know what magazine, other than that i think it's
true and i'm pretty skeptical about believing these things) said it's
going to be a special special edition because george lucas still wasn't
happy with 17 shots in a new hope. the only one that was mentioned was
obi-wan's death. i'm not sure if this is just for ep. 4 or for all of
them (he also mentioned it being shown with the next theathrical release
so my theory is - 2005 ep. 3 comes out, 2006, all six ep. are released
back to back just like the special editions were, xmas 2006, dvd's released.)
> Well, Lucas announced recently that he's not

As far as I know, this is just a rumour. In fact,
I still havent any _reliable_ source confirming
this [And no, I dont care about post in
newsgroups, or rumours on different websites, if
you have a reliable source, such as LucasFilm
themselves, then post that link].
Another rumour going around, which is a _lot more_
plausible, is that episode 4-6 will be released on
DVD _before_ xmas, something like 1-4 weeks before
Phantom Menace is released on DVD _and_ VHS.
The reason(s) given for it not being released yet
are different depending on which source you listen
too, but the most likely one I have heard is that
George Lucas didnt have time to work on the DVD
release because of the release of PM.
After all, think about it for a second here. A
DVD-release of episodes 4-6 could be _the most
profitable_ release on DVD so far. Why the heck
would LucasFilm pass up on an opportunity like
this? It would be just plain stupid financially,
and if we have learned thing about LucasFilm, it
is that they do very rarely make _stupid_
financial decisions.
Also, keep in mind that DVD-authoring software and
hardware is on affordable levels now. Lets for a
second assume that this year 2006 rumour was true.
What do you think would happen? Well, the market
would be _flooded_ with highquality transfers from
the Laserdisc version to DVD by pirates.
/Mattias
PS: As a sidenote to those who wants the original
release of episode 4-6 on DVD: Get it on Laserdisc
and do your own transfer. I really doubt the
market is big enough for the original release for
us to ever see the non-modified version on DVD.
True, its kinda steep cost, just to transfer one
film, but you could always use it on other
releases too in the future, or use the equipment
to backup your favorite TV-shows on DVD too.

Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to post info on my recent purchase with Jonathan. I
ordered Phantom Menace on VCD. I sent out my payment, by overnight, last
week Thursday. Jon received my payment that Friday and sent out my VCD's.
The package came this past Friday and I have no problems to report!
(althought I didn't really get to watch it til yesterday because of the
flu). So I would suggest to others that he is a honest trader/seller. If
he gets anything else in, of my personal interest, I will do business with
him again! I hope this info helps anyone out there...
