It took me a long time too to get into MAYH, but it was worth it... Is
the new album some kind of concept album?

Me too, but it have grown on me more than the others.. At first I was
liking Morningrise much more than MAYH, but now I think they're
different but about as good.
I haven't gotten into Still Life yet, but it sounds good... The best album
is Orchid, I loved this the first time I heard it!

I think MAYH is much better then Orhid which I also own..
I don't know.. but ii is more balanced then the other albums..
I heard a track from Still Life on the radio yesterday.. It souned a lot
like
the MAYH material... So it's good!

Is this based on compositional merit, or is it the heavy, lush, and warm
sounding production of MAYH that draws you in more than Orchid.

Over the last days, I've been able to straight it up a bit.
The thing is that at first listens it sounded more like a cross between
_Orchid_ and My Arms, Your Hearse but I guess it was only because the
first track (The Moor) has some really Forest Of Octoberian parts,
which kind of tricked me. The album is way more simplier than the
previous ones. There is one fact I can not get over. The cleans singing
is truly regressed, sounding at parts just like the chants on Orchid.
Compositions are, as said, simple, and there flicks chorus-type parts
here and there. I myself don't see this as abad thing, it's just that a
part of the biggest mystery in the bands sound were the awesome quirky
arrangements.
The crux of the album is however GROOVINESS. Take a song like Serenity
Painted Death, which is just pure heaviness, and then Face Of Melinda
which is so delicate, yet also grimacing of jazz&groove. Acoustic
guitars seem to be EVERYWHERE, the crushing attack parts are backed up
by acoustic chording, and there is a good load of acoustic picking
also. Six out of the seven songs really rise on you after a couple of
listens, but the last one is much to handle. I've given the album over
30 listens, and it truly is a great piece!
Bad points lay on the layout. The cover art, for one, sucks mightily.
Also, atleast the promo-cd has GREY print, in stead of GREEN. Mistake!
About the lyrics then; I just got them some 40 minutes ago and haven't
really had time to check them, but I will. I am sure the album will
feel even better after few listens with the lyrics. Headphones are must
again when listening to the album! It seems to be a concept album, yet
I am not 100% sure..
It is above the standards of modern music - yet, I am afraid, it is the
"worst" album up to date..

Argh, you should never typo your favourite albums, I am sorry...
MAYH felt instantly like a good 9/10 album, but it was only after six
months I realized that it was a quality continuation to Morningrise.
Then again, Still Life feels like a quality continuation to MAYH.
Damn, people, buy the album! I know I will (sure I have the promo, but
that's just LAME).

Headphones blow! Besides, it is your duty as an extreme metal fan to
always make your neighbors cognizant of what you are listening to at any
given moment.
Hell yes! Fuck neighbors. Turn it up to "10" and let it fucking rip.
Growling in the shower is always fun, too.

But these go to eleven!
There are albums of which you can certainly get a better idea by
listening them through headphones (at least at some stage), like
Transilvanian Hunger, Pure Holocaust, Malice (if anyone ever wants
to hear this),... Well, all the low-fi stuff.

I'm not against headphones, only neighbors. . .and whoever else gets

Agreed. Still, there's nothing like blasting Ildjarn at your
neighbors...

Yeah you get great harmonics in the shower!!!

Not Grado (TM) headphones. ;-)

Fuck yeah. During my uni exams period a couple of years ago, my next door neighbours
were partying hard at 4am. The host (and my neighbour) had fallen asleep, and nobody
was in any mood to listen to polite requests to "shut the fuck up". I had that place cleared
in 8 minutes after sneaking over and putting "Forest Poetry" on the CD player. True story.
