okay freaks...
saw the beasties last week in GERMANY at a massive little party called
the Hurricane Festival outside Hamburg and here's how it all shook
down...

well first of all lemme say that they definitely know how to throw a
open-air-konzert in europe. think lollapalooza times three or four with
very little bullshit security. this fest had two days of bands,
including bjork and sonic youth and a bunch of other randoms like
chumbywumby and iggy pop. there were 3 new BEASTIE shirts on sale, a
blue one that said (beastie boys) on front and had a schematic drawing
of the sardine can on the back; a white one that had weird different
version of the sardine can, and a brown one with rainbow lines going all
over it. needless to say all the shirts were fat. i got the braun one,
boyee! so anyway checkitout:

on sunday morn our boy money mark took the stage for about 30 minutes
and his shit is pretty solid live. i had never seen money mark live
before and here's the list for anyone out there who might be interested
in what his deal is onstage:

INSECTS ARE ALL AROUND US real fuckin nice live. much better than on
the record. he had a DJ with him who fucked shit up pretty good...

ALL THE PEOPLE this is where he started the pop section of the show.
personally i prefer the keyboard stuff, but this was kool...

TOMORROW WILL BE LIKE TODAY happy shiny money mark-
after this, the dude from rancid came out onstage and started screaming.

DON'T a fairly decent rendition

ROCK IN THE RAIN more pop from the double-M.
MAYBE I'M DEAD his backup band is pretty good, anyone know who they
are?
HAND IN YOUR HEAD i guess this is his best-known song, people started
dancing a good bit to it.

THE FUCKJAM is what he ended it with. i don't know if thats the real
name but it was just everyone going insane. it sounded like his DJ was
mixing in some old CheckYourHead money mark songs which was nice...

much of the rest of sunday was spent on random acts like Pulp and
Garbage. i was busy drinkin beer and chillin so i can't tell ya too
much about that!!

but around 9:30 pm the brothers WEEN took the sidestage. if anybody
out there doesn't wanna read about ween then start scrollin. but these
guys really got their shit together, so freak on it boyee! anyway Gene
and Dean were rockin and rollin, looked real happy to see all the
Germans buggin out to the Poopship... opened with

TAKE ME AWAY which is always a rocker and went right into
DON'T GET 2 CLOSE (2 MY FANTASY) surprisingly, there were some germans
who knew the words and stuff. plus they shared their spliffs, so word
em on up!
FREEDOM OF '76
WAVIN MY DICK IN THE WIND the germans REALLY dug on this one
DR.ROCK awwwww yeah!!
HINDU CHANT-->CAN'T PUT MY FINGER ON IT this one is worth the price of
admission alone, kids

at this point Gener paused, everyone started yelling for the STALLION
but gener just smiled and said... "There's a fly on my Dick!!"
unfortunately by this time it was ten before 10:00, the magic hour when
the BEASTIES were set to take the stage. Gener knew it, too, and he
said "Anyone who's favorite band is the Beastie Boys can go over there
now." Considering i had permission i figured i could!! so to the
opening notes of BUCKINGHAM GREEN we made our way over to the main
stage, where lee skratch perry tunes were boomin out of the system...

just in time because a few minutes later MixMasterMike came struttin
out!! there was no fancy background, just a sheet. i was hopin for the
Giant Robot to make an appearance, but they're probably saving him for
the U.S. tour. Anyway MMM rocked the fuckin turntables!!! that
motherfucker can skratch like a turkey on PCP. he was sorta mixing old
JB's with Dr.Octo beats mixed in with your momma's left nipple, that's
the only way i can describe it. anyway before long the beats of STAND
TOGETHER started seepin out the speakers!! everyone got psyched and
started movin around and the BEASTIES came runnin out on stage!
everyone in the crew was wearing green button-down shirts and dickies.
but the beatsies soon disappeared and ran off stage, then before you
know it MixMasterMike had switched the beat straightup over to

SHAKE YOUR RUMP an outstanding opener for the show!! unfortunately i
think they sold about 3 copies of the Boutique in Europe, cause most of
the krauts were standing around dumbfounded. i was like MOVE
motherfuckers!! i think the beasties were kind of shocked too, cause in
amerika (of course) the crowd would have been in the rafters. they
didn't play anything else from PB for the whole rest of the show. :(
that's germany for ya i guess... anyway then they busted out

SURE SHOT which of course drove the freaks into a frenzy (they had
heard it before). MixMasterMike appropriately switched over midway
through the tune to the European B*Boy mix... then they freaked to

TIME TO GET ILL sped up, sort of like the '92 mix, real FAT though.
then onto the first Nasty of the night,

BODY MOVIN it's a good one! people definitely moved to this one- then
they picked up their instruments and worked into a smooth

SABROSA which as y'all know is real nice live. after that
MixMasterMike started scratching the CYH version of Gratitude, and only
one thing could be next-

GRATITUDE it's so sick with MMM!! and MCA was jammin the shit out of
his bass, way to go adam yauch, then they picked up their mics so-->

PASS THE MIC started with the album mix, then switched to a new one-
pretty good- and then Mike D said "now we're going to play one of our
new songs" but Adrock and MMM looked at him weird so he changed his mind
and was like "Uhh sorry ladies and gentlemen but due to contractual
obligations we are now going to play one of our older songs..."

PAUL REVERE not bad!! but the way the song is set up, Adrock does
almost all of it and so MCA and Mike D are just sort of sitting there.
plus Adrock turned the mic out to the audience for a singalong but i
think there were like 2 other people there who knew the words. they
didn't even know "i did it with a wiffleballbat!!" (what?!?!!) about
halfway through the song some German Freak jumped on stage (there was
practically no security) and messed the whole thing up. but they picked
the beat back up with help from MMM and finished it just laughing and
shit. MCA didn't look too interested during the whole affair... but
then they freaked to

3 MC'S AND ONE DJ another Nasty classic. basically a showcase for MMM,
cause he's throwin new shit out during the whole thing. nice.

TOUGH GUY oh shit!!! germans love to mosh!! even the fake german
hippies!!

I WANT SOME they actually played a LOT of hardcore during this show.
but the Aglio E Olio songs sound much better live actually. then Mike D
was like "Okay y'all this next one's going out to someone who was
supposed to play with us tonight, but couldn't make it... our boy Billy
Joel" then-->

HEART ATTACK MAN your lungs are full of spam!! as they were finishing,
MixMasterMike was scratching in some Billy Joel, fer real!! i tell ya,
the guy is a fuckin FREAK!! funny as hell!

I DON'T KNOW was a good one. but the germans were going seriously NUTS
to all the hardcore. so they chilled it down with

LIGHTEN UP which is also a real nice one live. MixMasterMike skratched
some dank shit in the background too. "this next one's for all the
lovers out there" said Mike D, and it was time for

THE SON OF NECKBONE this one also chilled people down a bit and some
spliffys got smoked (just trust me on that one!) but then it was time
to get insane again:

SUPER DISCO BREAKIN all the bboys looked a lot more into it on the
newer songs like this one, i guess cause its all a lot fresher. then on
to

PUTTING SHAME IN YOUR GAME which came across okay although the beats
are a lot slower on this one so people didn't jump around too much. the
beastie brothers swiftly remedied that, though, with

SO WHAT'CHA WANT obviously always going to be a classic. MMM threw in
the Cypress Hill beats for the last verse... then it was onto

SLOW AND LOW i think y'all know how this one goes!!

at this point Adam H. saw how worn out the crowd was and asked someone
to get some water to spray out on us... but none came... and Mike D said
"this next one's going out to Thurston"...

B.E.A.S.T.I.E. GO!!! more antique hardcore! ohshit!! it must have
been a night of dedications cause Mike D then said "and this one goes
out to Dickie and all the Mighty Mighty Bosstones"

TIME FOR LIVIN the germans really moved to this one which was nice,
then AdRock said "Okay it's time for a new one"

REMOTE CONTROL this one is a serious fuckin scorcher, y'all. can't
wait to hear the album version, it set the place on crazy fire! Yauch
was makin some wildman faces and it's always good to see him having a
fine olde time... then Mike D said "Okay one more then we gotta split,
we gotta take the Disco Express outta here"-

ROOT DOWN is where the closer was at. not too bad- but it sounded like
MMM was switching back and forth between different mixes (album-->prunes
mix) a little too much though cause it got disJointed. but of course
they left the stage to massive applause and everyone started screaming
<<BEASTIE BEASTIE!!>> so a few minutes later the serial wax killer
MixMasterMike came out on stage and said "Mind if I cut it up a little
bit" and then jammed the fuck out of those Technics!! i wanted to see
him do his shit for like half an hour! but before long, one certain
transplanetary sound came towards us... time for the encore of:

INTERGALACTIC which rocks even harder live (if you can believe it).
the beasties came out doing a little ROBOT dance, it was fat! the
germans got freaky to this one, even though probably none of them had
heard it yet. then they earned old-skool points with

RHYMIN AND STEALIN with the same mix as '86. i think the boys are a
little tired of all the LTI songs though (wouldn't you be?!?) they've
been bustin those exact same rhymes and beats for a decade now!! but
the ultimate closer was, of course,

SABOTAGE and the house almost fuckin fell down. everyone and their
boomin granny knows this song and i met some germans who actually
thought it had been their first single since Fight for your Right. But
the boys did it out in classic style, money mark did a flip over his
keyboards, everyone was happy. a beastie revolution!!

so that was the show, a good fuckin time, can't wait for the next one!
i'll see ya freaks in Chicago Aug. 12!!

not like the crack thatcha put in a pipe,
