OT: The Charges Against Saddam

Administration has harped on the thousands of "his own people" that
were killed under Saddam Hussein. Curiously, the charges that are
being brought against Saddam ignore the vast majority of these killings
(which, by the way, are fewer than the number of civilian deaths that
have occurred since 2003 due to U.S. bombings), and are largely limited
to a 1982 involving the deaths of 150 people. Why? Clearly, if these
other specific charges are brought against him, Saddam's defense is
going to point out that most of those WMDs that he used to kill his
people were purchased from U.S. companies and cleared by the Reagan
Administration, who was happy to sell Hussein WMDs as long as he was
engaged in war against Iran, regardless of where he was actually using

The first of few charges against Saddam Hussein
The Iraqi Special Tribunal (IST), the judicial group set up by the
Iraqi Governing Council during the "official" occupation, has brought
its first charge against Saddam Hussein. According to the BBC, the
charge "involves the killing of Shia Muslims in the village of Dujail,
north of Baghdad, in 1982, after a failed assassination attempt against
him."
The scope of the IST's mandate is broad-
The Tribunal shall have jurisdiction over any Iraqi national or
resident of Iraq accused of the crimes listed in Articles 11 - 14,
committed since July 17, 1968 and up and until May 1, 2003 , in the
territory of Iraq or elsewhere, namely:
The crime of genocide;
Crimes against humanity;
War crimes;
or Violations of certain Iraqi laws listed in Article 14 below.
Those aforementioned Iraqi laws consist of-
For those outside the judiciary, the attempt to manipulate the
judiciary or involvement in the functions of the judiciary, in
violation, inter alia, of the Iraqi interim constitution of 1970, as
amended;
The wastage of national resources and the squandering of public assets
and funds, pursuant to, inter alia, Article 2(g) of Law Number 7 of
1958, as amended; and
The abuse of position and the pursuit of policies that may lead to the
threat of war or the use of the armed forces of Iraq against an Arab
country, in accordance with Article 1 of Law Number 7 of 1958, as
amended.
In short, the IST is investigating a span of 35 years for violations of
both international and Iraqi law.
Many commentators have wondered, considering the American involvement
with Saddam during that period, how embarrassment to the United States
could be avoided once the trial of Saddam begins. Well, returning to
the BBC report, this may be the answer-
"Hopefully, in the next few weeks, we look forward to concluding the
investigation into other cases," he [Raed Juhi, the chief investigating
judge] said, allowing other trials to go ahead. The Iraqi government
has said Saddam Hussein will face only 12 charges when he goes on
trial, despite a possible 500 cases against him.

My bad. I only read the 1st couple of paragraphs, and because it
started out like all the other anti-bush crap being posted here, i
didnt bother to read the whole thing. If it is indeed true that saddam
is not being prosecuted for all his crimes, I think that's wrong. I'm
actually shocked that there are only 500. With all the atrocities he's
committed against his people over all the years he was in charge, i
would think there'd be thousands of charges against him.

Well let's see . . . originally we went to war in Iraq because of
alleged weapons of mass destruction. Then when it became
overwhelmingly apparent that there were no WMDs, the Bush
Administration argument changed to "we're liberating the Iraqis from a
ruthless dictator." Now that the dictator is on trial, he is NOT being
prosecuted for 98% of the crimes that are (now) supposedly the reason
we are losing American troops in Iraq. Something stinks and it stinks

And incidentally, from the accounting I've seen, the crimes Hussein is
being charged for relate to the deaths of fewer than 200 people. Yet
the Bush Administration has been arguing that we needed to go after
Hussein because he was responsible for some 30,000 deaths. How can you
possibly justify not trying him for tens of thousands of deaths,
particularly given that that is the LATEST argument being put forth by
the Bush Administration for sacrificing American lives? If the
evidence of these crimes is solid enough to prosecute a war and
sacrifice our own people, then surely it's solid enough to prosecute
Saddam Hussein! Of course, the Bush Administration is relying on the
public being as uninformed and out of touch as Maybelline so they can
get away with this sham.

Well last time I was close enough to smell her was over 20 years ago.
I assume she was clean as I certainly didn't smell any offensive odors,
and she looked clean. So I'll assume she was. Of course, this was
after a concert, and she had been in her dressing room awhile (and I
seem to recall that she had changed clothes), so she must have showered
before coming out. She was very pleasant, and at that time YOUNG. And

In fairness, i expect that many of us did not "care" mostly
*because* we did not know ... which is mostly because
previous adminstrations turned blind eyes, you're right-on there.
The US helps arm a dictator, and it gets reported, but quietly,
as boring foreign policy paper-pushing that isn't a sexy story,
won't sell papers or get high ratings.. The dictator kills and
tortures his own countrymen, and it gets reported as a factoid,
with no anaylsis, the connections NOT made... except in
analytical media that i'm as guilty as anybody else of ignoring.

Thanks for your comments. You bring up some very good points. Our
media fails us way too often, putting emphasis on titillating stories
about Michael Jackson, Jon Benet Ramsey, the girl who went missing in
Aruba, Scott Peterson, etc., rather than focussing on stories that are
truly of national importance and in the best interests of the nation.
And frankly, it's not entirely the fault of the media; the public is
part of the problem as well. Our "news" organizations are ultimately
driven by profit, and when you have a public that's more interested in
what's being reported on Entertainment Tonight or in People magazine
than in decisions being made by our government that affect our national
interests and security, you wind up with what we now see so much of on
our news shows: tabloid journalism, emphasizing all this "stuff" rather
than the things that really matter. And in the end, we all lose
because we're left with a sadly uninformed public. In Europe, the news
isn't so commercial like it is here, so they are better informed. Our
news used to be far less commercial, I wish we could go back to those
days. At least we stil have PBS.
