John Prine
the Fastbacks

the Riverdales
Mojo Nixon
Impatient Youth

the Hooters

as far as overrated I'd have to say
Pearl Scam
Nine Inch Nails
Alice in Chains
Sinead O'Connor
and of course Morrisey (Have a Cheeseburger & a good fuck & shut the hell up)

this just goes to show that most people will take what they're spoonfed by the media as great rather than take a chance on
something unheadr of or untried. It's their loss(and the neglecte musicians' of course.)

If you listen to any of the above bands, Congratulate yourself on your good taste, if not put own that Bush cd and try something mtv
hasn't prechewed for you first. You will not be disappointed.

Your list thankfully puts Pearl Spam at the top. Is it just me, or are
these guys writing songs using the same riffs and chords as all their
other songs? I occasionally like something that Trent Reznor does, but
most of it is just bullshit noise. I happen to like AIC, but they are very
derivative.

More of the most overrated:
NIRVANA
Mariah Carey
Alanis Morisette
RAP
Brandy
Bush
Oasis
Cracker

My underrated (or unknown NY area locals) list:
Del Amitri
Susan Sed - NY local
After Cacciato - NY local
Naked Hoof/Bill Anderson - NYC/WWW (of course I had to plug my own case)
Ark Of Puppets - PA

Uh uh, wrong there about the Moz. Didn't the music of the Smiths move
you? Moz isn't a whiner, he's got a lot more to say than most bands
ever do. You don't necessarily have to like his music and beliefs, but
please give the guy credit. His only fault is to have influenced loads
of 2nd generation shite like Gene. Why'd you want him to shut up? His
caustic wit's so funny anyway...

Anyway your taste isn't half bad...

Here's my list of most overrated bands:
--Rebecca's Shit List--

REM (old stuff ok, but shut up already)
Greenday (pop formula shit)
Alice in Chains (one-trick pony; enough about the heroin already)
Soul Asylum (horrible)
U2 (I think the winner of worst band ever to make it big)
Smashing Pumpkins (whine, whine, whine)
Live (lame)
Oasis (rip-off kings, not *nearly* as good as those they rip-off)
Sonic youth (feedback gets annoying)
Prince(funk?-I don't think so)
Tori Amos (freaky, bad, pretentious, horrible)
Sting (adult album pop shit)
Bruce Springsteen (hasn't put out a decent album since 1975)
Mariah, Whitney, Janet Jackson, Michael jackson (need I say why?)
Rancid (who cares about this trend?)
Lenny Kravitz (see Oasis)
Aerosmith (over-the-top crap, take one of those scarves and wrap it
around your neck, Steven)
AC/DC (cheeze metal sucks; his voice can take the paint off the walls)

love, Rebecca

Duh. You're in alternative and your a big Pink Floyd fan! Puhlease. "Music is
all about having fun". Sure. And Pink Floyd are such a "fun" band. Green Day
never made out they were the saviours of the alternative music universe. Rolling
Stone, Juice, Spin magazine etc bestowed that title upon them. They never claim
to be anything more than a few thrash heads from Berkeley. (Check the chord
progressions on Insomniac. Nothing terribly ground breaking there.)

When I was a teenager I was big into Pink Floyd - even bought "the Madcap
Laughs" and other Syd Barret stuff. A suggestion - spread your range. If you
like PF, check out Joy Division, Nick Cave (Birthday Party), Scraping Foetus
(Jim Thirwell/Clint Ruin) and e few other true alternative musos. I'm not saying
PF is bad, they are just a little too corporate for my liking. (Pink Floyd
Corporation?)

I'll attempt to keep this as short as possible, in the interest of bandwidth.

Gin Blossoms...weak, futile attempt at solemness, and they're rippin' off
Toad the Wet Sprocket.
Hooty and The Blowfish...boring, monotonous, most songs=same groove.
Joan Osborne aka VH1 Whore...what better reason to stop watching TV
altogether...'Right Hand Man' tenacity of a 3 yearold asking for Ice
Cream when it's bed time.
Alannis Morisette..."I can sell records if I'm cute, right?" Jesus...
Presidents of USA...All I can say is ,"Pass the torch."
The Foo Fighters...Midas Band <Anything anyone from NIRVANA should touch
has GOT to be great zzzzzz>
Pigface...An amalgam of some REALLY great minds working together on a big
pile of dogshit...just add prison attire.
Oasis...just plain lame.
+Live+...used to be good, now, arena rock+bigtimeattitude.

VH1 and MTV have once again shoveled more lumps of shit into our homes
and frequented public places. THERE are always alternatives, even to
'alternative'...there are sooooooooo many bands that actually get lost in
this world, only to be shoved out of the way by the likes of the type
mentioned above...here are a few: The Judybats, the Beautiful South, Big
Head Todd and The Monsters, The Bottlerockets, Lush, The Charlatans...etc.
Free your comercially disrespected minds...if you actually WATCH MTV...

I agree with you on most of those, but leave Foo Fighters out. It took
me by surprise that they were as good as they were. I think it was a bit
brave of Dave Grohl to release something on his own when everybody would
compare it to Nirvana. But having a Nirvana past has helped him selling
records. No doubt about that.

Do we buy what MTV plays or does MTV play what we buy? In my view MTV is
just like any other public radio station. It's influence is definately
overrated. There were trends long before MTV existed. If there had been
an MTV in the 60's, people would say that MTV "created" The Beatles.

That's Hootie not Hooty. Agreed though. I like one of their songs.

: Joan Osborne aka VH1 Whore...what better reason to stop watching TV

I don't think that it was her choice to be the spokesperson for VH1. She
just has very listenable music. See speil below for my opinion.

That's Alanis Morissette. Spelling counts:).

Your opinion. That's fine if you don't like 'em. I don't think that
they're lame, but that's a whole other thread :).

: +Live+...used to be good, now, arena rock+bigtimeattitude.

How does a band go from being "good once" but now not good? Could it
have something to do with someone's jealousy over the band's sudden
popularity? (sarcasm should be noted here.)

I just have to say one thing, if you don't like what's being played on
eMpTyV or VH1, don't watch it!! It's as easy as that. I happen to like
about half the bands you mentioned there and I don't listen to the radio
or watch alot of MuchMusic (the Canadian equivalent to eMpTyV). Does
this mean that I have a commercially disrespected mind just because I
like Oasis and the Gin Blossoms? How about no. Just because you can't
stand these bands doesn't mean that you should slag off those who do.
People can make their own choices you know. I happen to like a lot of
bands that get virtually no coverage on radio or MuchMusic (eg. Therapy?,
The Verve). Even if these guys got into heavy rotation on Much or the
radio, would that make me less of person for liking them? No. Point is, I
like the music I like because it means something to me, not because it's
number one on the charts or because everyone else has it. That doesn't
bother me or figure into the equation at all when I'm looking to buy a
cd. Even if it did, who cares? I'm probably not going to change your
opinion and I can't say that I agree with it, but I do respect it. All I
ask is that you don't be so generalizing when placing music and people
into categories.

90% of what MTV shows is mediocre or crap, but sometimes I watch it just
to see the latest Smashing Pumpkins or Radiohead videos. They show them
from time to time between the Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Take That videos.
