Good artists, though not necessarily my favorites (just as a by-the-way). I
don't happen to know the band "Orbital" at all, however. Guess I'll have to
buy a few albums of theirs soon.

You sound like a person who has good music taste. Could you recommend other
music favorites of yours to me/us (in general)?

Thanks!

1. Bowie - Buddha Suburbia, Black Tie/ White Noise, Earthling, Outside,
Labyrinth, Sound + Vision, The Singles (They are all fantastic)
2. Gravity Kills - Gravity Kills (has Guilty single from SE7EN)
3. Radiohead - OK Computer (fantastic)
4. Veruca Salt - Eight Arms to Hold You (fantastic (has song called
David Bowie) & American Thighs (good but not as good as EAtHY-- has
"Seether")
5. Artificial Joy Club (good - has Sick & Beautiful)

These are the artists and their albums that I have found myself listening to
for more than a few weeks... David Bowie's "Tin Machine I" only lasted in
the mix for about 2 weeks but is still good... Another good CD that didn't
really make it onto the top 5 is Sting's new "Best of"... Fantastic!

If "dangerous" lyrics is what you are looking for then buying
albums by Orbital would be a waste of money, as they are virtually
all-instrumental :-)

Well, so's the "Art of Noise", and I really like their music (from what little
I've had the opportunity to hear of it, so far!). Just a few weeks ago, I
bought their CDs "The Best of the Art of Noise" and "Art of Noise: The Drum
and Bass Collection" - I hope to get the chance to listen to them soon!

Here's what's currently on my stereo...

1 : David Bowie - Low, Heroes (he said predictably...)
2 : Mark Hollis (formerly of Talk Talk) new self-titled solo album
3 : Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
4 : Scott Walker - Tilt
5 : Jeff Buckley - Grace

Okay, so maybe it's cheating to put 2 Bowie albums sharing first place but I
heartily recommend any of the others as a break from the norm...

Ahhh.. Thank you! Orbital, as I guess you wouldn't know, is more
of a trance band (person, whatever) rather than anything else. The music
is very unique, and tends to have more of a beat than traditional
trance.

The album 'In Sides' is very good. I actually bought it after
seeing the song 'The Box' on MuchMusic and i've been a fan ever since.
The songs tend to be of a darker nature, but its the kinda music that
sends so many chills up your spine that you just can't help but move to
the rhythm.

But then again, I'm biased. =)

>You sound like a person who has good music taste. Could you recommend other

Never, ever before in any newsgroup have I felt so great as I do
now.. Thank you. =)

There's a few albums that I would have to suggest.. And just
about anything from Pink Floyd would be in there.. (although, alot of
the music totally changes depending on the year).. I'm listening to my
second favourite album now, which is 'Meddle'.. It's got, IMHO, the
Floyd's best song ever, 'Echoes'.. something you seriously have to hear
to believe.

AFter that, i've always been a fan of alot of older tunes,
headlined my Hendrix, Black Sabbath, and (although a different genre)
Booker T and the MG's. As well, i'm a fan of newer Trance, as I don't
like a good beat ruined by some woman wailing away in the background
about 'how I should live my life' or 'what I should do at a party with
some loose girl'.. Nope. Not for me..

That's just an idea, anyways.. There's lots of music out there
to be appreciated, and in my opinion, you just gotta look past the
headlines to find it. (Take Beck for example.. I'm a huge fan of the
guy, and i try to collect as much of his music as I can.. BUT, only his
older stuff, the stuff with much more feeling.. Especially after I saw
him in concert at Varsity Arena last.. April I think it was, in
Toronto.. IMHO, his older stuff is truly 'Where it's At')

If you want a bigger, more precise list, gimme some email and
i'll set you up.. i don't want to start rambling on about different
stuff in all of the wrong newsgroups..

Thanks for the interest!

Just wanted to note that "Robinson Crusoe" is a great song (from "The Best of
the Art of Noise" album); I just heard it a few days ago for the first time,
and it's now one of my all-time favorites! I also really like "Paranoimia",
"Instruments of Darkness", "Dragnet", and "Kiss".

I've heard some of "Art of Noise: The Drum and Bass Collection", and it's
good; I definitely prefer the "Best of..." album, however.

it is all appalling. The only good Art of Noise stuff was on ZTT, which
as far as I now they didn't retain the rights to so it hasn't appeared
on any of the 'collection' compilations. Incredible that the ZTT stuff
should be so fresh, original, spine-chillingly good, and the China stuff
is almost without exception dull, lift-musicy, semi-amusing bollocks.

Well, excuse me all over the place. IMHO, 'best of' collections
exist solely for the purpose of releasing 'the best known' songs.. some
of which are very good. But before you think i'm disagreeing, there ARE
alot of lesser-known songs which are very, very good. Like i've said in
a past message, Pink Floyd are known mostly for 'Dark Side of the Moon'
but, truly, 'Meddle' is a far better album. Take the 22 minute song
'Echoes' - a musical masterpiece yet vastly overlooked.

Actually, I have heard it.. And, it is quite good.. And like you
read, I can sympathise with your pleas.

Honestly, though, i'm not the die-hard fan of Bowie, nor would I
really consider myself being. He's a talented musician and songwriter,
and I think it's nicely shown with this particular cd. I really have no
need to buy all of the albums he's ever released (Actually, I don't
think I have that much money) to really appreciate him.

Then at least you accept the fact that some older stuff might be
better. If you like the above albums (I most certainly don't btw.)
you'd probably like 80s bands such as Hüsker Dü and Dead Kennedys.
You may also probably like some 70s American underground rock such
as Patti Smith, Ramones, Iggy Pop and Jonathan Richman & The
Modern Lovers.

I agree and then I don't agree. As for David Bowie his early 70s
work consisted of mainly good stuff, and the albums were great as
a whole, and probably should be listened to that way. Still I see
nothing wrong in compiling his most well-known stuff from his
entire career for new people to get into his music.

Also remember there are artists whose albums are largely patchy
and therefore the best stuff is more listenable on compilations.
This, for instance, is the case with most mid 60s music, save for
exceptions such as Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Byrds.
It is also the case with several more recent acts.

I almost agree with you here. I do think their first China effort
"In Visible Silence" is quite decent, if for anything "Legs"
(which IMHO is one of the most alien Top 40 singles ever).
Also, parts of "Instruments of Darkness" and "The Chameleon's
Dish" are decent. Also the following single "Legacy"
had quite a brutal stomp. But agreed... everything from "In No Sense?
Nonsense!" and after is indeed shit.

Here should be your Art of Noise shopping list.

Daft CD... contains 99.9% percent of all their early ZTT material,
including the mini-album "Into Battle", the "Who's Afraid" album,
and some versions of "Moments In Love".

In Visible Silence CD... for the reasons mentioned above.

That pretty much covers all the essential stuff.

The Man who Sold the World without the Bewlay Brothers? Somehow, it
sounds OK to me. :)

If it is indeed your favourite (or I guess I should spell "favorite"
just in spite of you) album, how come you don't know that this song is
from Hunky Dory??? It's just so strange to see an error like that posted
by the person who has flooded the newsgroup with his arrogant crap
on how he alone understands what Bowie is all about...

oh and if you're referring to the Red Dwarf usage the word is Schmegg'ed as
in Schmegg Head.

If you're gonna play me on home territory, at least learn the game, eh

Schmegegge? Isn't that a word used by Jewish New Yorkers?

don't be sillier than absolutely necessary, college; 'schmegegge' is
is yiddish for the kind of person you are.

Learn the game yourself, Ali. It's SMEG, not schmeg. If you're going
to correct people, you might as well give them an accurate correction!

yep, you're right, as usual, I haven't watched Dwarf since I was 15, but you
know what I meant.

Pronounced like "schmeg-eggy", with the accent on the second syllable.
