About this release:
Formed in 1977, MEKONS have released 13 full length records, 5 Ep's, and
9 singles in their career. They have always attempted to break the
boundaries of both music and art with their actions. Never confined to
the world of "Rock 'N' Roll", the members set out to pursue further
artistic mediums including paintings, photographs, a collaborative
novel, as well as collaborations with artists such as VITO ACCONCI & a
spoken word endeavor with KATHA ACKER.
"United" includes a 71 minute, 23 track cd w/unreleased tracks & a 10
1/4" x 7 1/2" 200 page collection of writings, art, & critiques.
Includes 59 color illustrations (25 are full page) & 32 b&w
illustrations.
"United" culls selected works from critics & fans including GREIL
MARCUS, LESTER BANGS, TERRY ATKINSON, SHELIA STEWART-LEACH, TOM O'RAGE,
PATRICK EYRES, EMMA BOLLAND, JOHN GILL, MARK TERRILL & WENDY FRITH. The
reader is also treated to an excerpt from MEKONS work in progress,
"Living In Sin", tour diaries, & extensive examples of their artwork.
"United" was designed around an art exhibit at the Polk Museum of Art in
Lakeland, Forida. While this is their first endeavor into printed
materials, they have recently collaborated with KATHY ACKER on "Pussy,
King of the Pirates" released on Grove Press/Quarterstick Records.
"United" is an extensive exploration not only of MEKONS & their unique
approach to art but of the general philosophies of the punk movement in
both Europe & the US.
