Nah, just saw one of his posts last night. I hope to God it's just a rumour.

Oh anguish! Agony! I say that we should organize a candlelight
vigil at Ned's favorite reading spot in Aldrich Park this very
night! Meet me at midnight, i'll bring the candles.
It is a sad, sad day indeed...

Then again, where is he? How come he hasn't responded to this
thread? Oh, you mean he might have a life apart from ama? :)
But seriously, Ned, if you're around, post -- you have us a tad bit
worried!

Eh? I did post -- hell, I think I was the first one to respond to
Brian's thread. Might want to double-check with your sysops as to
the reliability of the Usenet updates! Fear not, friend Brian was

Ned, you had us worried (at least me and Neil). Geez, don't know how these
rumors get started, but sometimes they are a royal pain in the ass.

It seems rumours about your death are a bit overdone... :-)

Well, good to see he's alive. (That sounds weird to write.)

I finally got the album, and I was quite impressed with how much they've
expanded their style. I was expecting an album closer to Olympian, but
this one seems miles away from it. Their trademark sounds are still
there (or as Ned would say, their Smiths sounds...), but it really does
diverge from those influences after a point. Quite a nice leap forward.
Whether I still pop this CD in after 2 years (as I still do with
Olympian)
remains to be seen, but I'm encouraged.

It's alot more ambitious than the Olympian, if you ask me. Almost as if they
were trying to doge the Smiths's comparison backlash (as Blur is dodging the
'britpop' backlash with their latest...and they succeded well). I like it
alot. It's obviously not as memorable as Olympian, but hey this one might
even bring 'ole Ned around :)
PS - I also bought the Longpigs debut album. Great stuff. People have been
comparing them to Suede. I'm not too familiar with Suede, but the Longpigs
definitely are great. Very hooky album.

Oh, it's definitely more ambitious. Starting with the first track,
New Amusements, the band is clearly bent on showing that they are more
than
a one-dimensional outfit. Shockingly, Entertainment Weekly gave the
album
a B+. Here's what they wrote (for those without it):
Gene "Drawn to the Deep End"
Even if Martin Rossiter is a vocal dead ringer for the Smiths'
Morrissey, Gene have expanded their musical vocabulary enough to
establish their own identity. The band's second album is an
emotionally turbulent release that flutters with romantic yearning
one moment and shivers with the frustration of unrequited love the
next. Drown in the splendor. B+
Woohoo!

I haven't heard of the Longpigs before -- if they sound like Suede,
are they a glam-influenced band? And Persinthia, I'm somewhat shocked
that you aren't too familiar with Suede! Their second LP, "Dogmanstar,"
is one of the decade's essential discs -- a haunting, epic masterpiece
that was shunned by critics as being too melodramatic and dark -- but
hailed by fans as a peerless classic. Well worth investigating...
Oh, I'm seeing Blur on Tuesday -- I haven't heard much of the new
album yet as it isn't out domestically, but that's ok -- they always
put on quite an amusing show.
In your dreams. What I have heard is enough to make me yawn and
move on...again.
Amusing and very very true story -- a Good Friend Who Shall Remain
Nameless works for Gene's American label. Said Friend contacted
a co-worker regarding promotional flyers for the new Gene album,
meant to accentuate certain songs on the album. Quoth Friend to
co-worker, "Here's our list...what do you think?" Response of
co-worker, "You forgot 'Panic,' 'Girlfriend in a Coma,' and
'Sheila Take a Bow.'" Response of Friend, "Don't forget 'There is
a Light That Never Goes Out.'"
Guys, I'm sorry, but they still haven't convinced me. Even Elastica
varies from song to song when it comes to the bands they clone.
Just because other people say that they aren't Morrissey and company
redux doesn't mean I'll change my opinion, much as my own cracks
as to their worthlessness won't change yours. Enjoy, but I leave
you with the thought that any one T. Rex single from 1970 to 1973
has more in the way of fun, sass, sex, sadness, melancholy and
pristine orchestration that the entirety of Gene's increasingly
yawnsome and tiresome career. Actually, so does any Marc Almond single
as well -- he probably joined them for that cover of 'Say Hello
Wave Goodbye' for the giggles.

Yep...I'm going a week from Wednesday. Probably gonna catch Kula next month
as well. I missed the first tour. I had someone tape a Gene broadcast of a
live concert last night in the UK, let me know if you'll want a copy. I'll
still dub you some other Gene stuff when you have time to send me tapes
(including an interview a couple of weeks ago in the UK)

Maybe not, but I do recommend checking out the Longpigs. Their album 'The Sun
Is Often Out' just came out domestically. Great stuff.
