As you may or may not know, Mark Kozelek and co. have had a completed
album or two just waiting to get released for some time now. For reasons
beyond any of us, his record company, Universal, will not release this
album because they feel it won't sell too well. Well, to make a long story
short, some people on the Mistress (RHP) list had the idea of starting a
petition, something to actually show Universal that RHP have fans and are
eagerly awaiting some new material by the band. It's about putting music
before profit. So, if you are a fan of the band, or even not, just show
your support for music in general, please sign this petition. Also, send
this on to anyone and everyone you know. Every little bit might help.
Thanks.

> The URL for the petition is http://public.connect.org.uk/~dan/rhp/

Maybe it's me but that link is not working. I would really like to get on
that petition and I know a few others that would as well.

It worked yesterday but it indeed seems to be down at the moment. Keep
trying. It's worth the effort. :-)

Aaarrrggghhh! Another one!
Has anyone any idea why record companies do this?
Why let the artist finish an lp, then sit on it?
Why spend vast amounts of cash on recording something, then not release it?

It's happened recently with Tiger and The Lilac Time/Duffy. In both cases
promos were pressed (and sleeves designed for the latter), but they weren't
released. Both eventually came out on indie labels.

What exactly is the logic behind this...? Surely they're better off
releasing it to poor sales than not releasing it at all? After all, they've
already spent the majority of the money involved in producing an lp.....

Actually, the promo can cost far more than the production. Particularly if
there is some sort of contractual obligation to do a music vid. The sad fact
is that for big labels, producing music is the lesser expense.

So how come all these records get released in the end?
I doubt if anyone's releasing them at a loss, so how come the small
companies can make it worth their while, whereas the big companies can't?
