I like to have a real fast DOS on my new computer but how do I do
that?
The computer ( medion ) has a RAID controller and a video card is
Nvidea Geforce 9500, which doesn't do graphics under winXP/DOS.
The reason I want it to speed up is it is really slow and I need to run
some heavy quickbasic programs.
Is there a solution for this, what is the best way to go for max speed?
BTW
I do have a set of DOS floppies but no floppy drive :-)
Can I make a bootable CD from these floppies and install it,
if so how?
Thanks for suggestions
Edmund
1) DOS runs pretty much OK as a Windows command line. There one or two
legal tricks with the options to improve this to remain full screen
and normal DOS fonts.
2) You floppy prolem is solved easily by getting an old or new floppy
drive (1.4Meg type, I assume) and hooking it up in your Raid-type
computer. There will be soace and cables already present. A second-
hand store will sell you on for peanuts. New, you can order for a few
dollars.
At $25/hr a repair shop will installone probably for free in 20 mins
and charge an hour.
3) You have an nVidia card. You CAN program this, even in Fortran
(using free CUDA).
4) I run DOS on every machine I have (and I have 6 perfectly working
95,98,NT 2000, and XP machines).
5) You can program DOS to work like windows with some font
limitations, but full colour and grahics, of course.
6) You arrange to boot in DOS mode or windows mode. or DOS firstt and
then tell it to load Windows hen you want. Check out booting with the
F8 held down , or sometime with DEL held down to get at the BIOS data;
but be careful.
You could install FreeDOS from CD - the ISO files are available here:

I'd look into FreeDOS if I were you. http://www.freedos.org/ It's not
DOS, but it's modern and DOS-compatible.
Hope this helps.

hehe Out come the guns. DOS was originally a Disk Operating System
anyway, so Windows, BEOS, BSD, Linux etc all fall into that catagory.
*** So did the early Apple systems. However, "DOS" has come to be
associated with a specific type of operating system.
