All, best wishes for 2012!

I am attempting to carry out a BIOS update. Following instructions, I put
the update files on my (SATA) harddisk (C:)
The requested start-up from boot CD-ROM was done, with subsequent choice of
MS-DOS entry mode.
Now I have a drive A:, but cannot find the harddisk to start the BIOS
update...
Help greatly appreciated.
Best regards,

Marcel

Real MSDOS doesn't know about NTFS file systems or large partitions.

You would need to put it on a FAT12 (floppy) or FAT16 (made for MSDOS) file system.

Another method, when booting to MSDOS from USB is not available on the machine, is to create a bootable cdrom with the BIOS update and flashing utility on the cdrom.

Thanks Mic,

first I will put the BIOS update and flashing utility on a USB with FAT (not
FAT32, not NTFS)

No, unfortunately USB was not reachable.

I will need to check how to make a bootable cdrom with the BIOS update and
flashing utility on it
( OS is Windows XP SP3 )

If the machine is fairly recent then they can boot from USB key, providing the USB device is plugged in when it is restarted so the BIOS can see the USB key.

There are tools around to make a bootable USB key.

That info is around on google too.

Some implementations may be easier than others - for EG downloading a boot image and then inject the files into it using a program that can open the ISO image, save and write it to a cdrom.

Good luck.

what is 'for EG downloading a boot image'

the contraction means 'for example'

I'm used boot disk images from this site in the past.

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

You might also find a hard disk boot image in google which allows larger files on the cd, if size is a problem.

When you say "unfortunately USB was not reachable", do you mean that after
you booted from your DOS CD-ROM, the USB Flash-Drive cannot be accessed?

If so, if it is possible for you to create your own boot disk, you can get
the DOS drivers for a basic USB Flash-Drive so that it can be accessed
under DOS.

You may download a copy of the required drivers from the link below :

Download [USBDOS.ZIP] [24KB] (with documentation).
