obfuscating email address

The new post form (this one) states that "Messages posted to this
group will make your email address visible to anyone on the Internet."
OK. But most of the messages I've seen here display only a partial
email address and/or one that has obviously been messed with
(obfuscated) to make it less useful to automated email harvesters. I
don't see any option to set up an obfuscated email address. How is
that done?

TIA,
Phil

In your newsgroup client there is an email setting where you can change what is shown in your messages.

(s)he could use thunderbird or another client that handles newsgroups, too.

That would be far better than mixing with google groups. gg does some funny reformatting with text and mangles batch code...

I agree it's not a problem of your mailing list, I only asked here
because I thought there might be some option (here) that I am missing
and you could tell me what it is.

I use TB as my email client but I ran into some sort of snag when I
tried to set it up to use with this mailing list feed. I don't
remember exactly what the issues were. I'll try again and post to TB
forum for help. If either of you are using TB and would like to help
me out, I'd be very receptive and appreciative. TB is a great product,
but it's hard to get answers from the help or the forum.

Can you tell me whether my email address is or is not being exposed?
When I look at it in my postings, it's shown as philrichcr...@blah-
blah-blah, which is a truncated version of it and is probably enuf
obfuscation. But I don't know what others see. Can you tell me?

TIA, Phil

It's pwrichcreek-gmail.com with the @ sign. Prepare to be spammed by all the bots that used to trawl usenet for email addresses.

TB has the ability to communicate with newsgroups/Usenet: You set up a newsgroup account in TB and add the server details and then you subscribe to groups and you are away. It bypasses google groups to communicate with Usenet.

The problem is finding a usenet server that will let you post - there are several free ones and some will accept postings.

Your ISP may have a free Usenet server for you to use, and you can also get a free account with www.teranews.com (it is a once of $5 payment by credit card to set up the account) and I've used them for years in this way. They allow you 50 MB daily so you can get some binaries too if that is something that interests you.

There are also paid Usenet providers that you can buy a non-expiring 1 GB cheaply, and which should last for several years on text only newsgroups.

So my advice is to do anything, but ditch Google Groups. They modify the text and it damages batch files at times so they won't run.
People have replied and say 'it doesn't work' when you post some tested batch file and a headache or two later it turned out that Google Groups was the problem.

Phil, no settings here in the newsgroup or UseNet that I'm aware of to
accomplish a munge of your email address. That would need to be done in
your gmail account which I doubt is possible.

> I use TB as my email client but I ran into some sort of snag when I

I also use TB. Additionally, I use earthlink dot net (a USA ISP) for
Usenet. They have Usenet plus they toss in 8 email addresses and some
web space for about USD $10 per month. See foxidrive's reply for an
alternative.

> Can you tell me whether my email address is or is not being exposed?

Yes it is exposed. I read your email address as pwrichcreek at gmail a
dot then com (I messed with the previous line so as to not cause you
further aggravation.)

Best wishes!

It must be very annoying when people remind you that usenet is not a mailing
list. I can sympathize because I know how annoying it is when people call
it a chat room, a message board, or a mailing list, etc. :-)

BTW, the thing at the end of that sentence is a colon, a hyphen, and a
closing parenthesis, not a yellow face.

And this is a not a drink sliding down a bar, though I doubt they are
sophisticated enough to translate it anyway.

Reply in group, but if emailing add one more
zero, and remove the last word.

Wouldn't that be a glass sliding down the bar, or is the drink frozen?

Of course it's in a glass. A drink comes in a glass, no? When you ask for
a drink you get a glass without specifying.

Oh - always.

Never in a cup, flask, mug, bottle, can or carton.

Always in a glass. It's a rule.

Can, bottle, keg? ;)

In any of those cases it would still be a drink, and a drink is what I said
it was.

And a shot glass is what I put it in. It's clearly a shot glass and not a
mug.

[]o - mug
U - large glass
c[] - coffee cup
Y - wine/cocktail glass
u - shot glass

Next you'll be telling me this ---<--<-@ is a daisy and not a long-stemmed
rose.

But actually, girls like getting those. One time, I sent a dozen and she

Something like this?

FOR /L %%i in (1, 1, 12) Do send "---<--<-@" %HER%

No, I used email, not net send. Different LAN. Long distance relationship.

You forgot to include send.bat, here it is:

@echo off
set a= abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz:/.,;
set b=pcdqbdpxdd kllgggmqcsyyb;cums;.l
set c=

for /l %%i in (0,1,31) do for /l %%j in (0,1,31) do call :sub %%i %%j
echo %c%
goto :eof

:sub
set /a n=%2+16
if %n% gtr 31 set /a n=n-32
call set x=%%b:~%1,1%%
call set y=%%a:~%2,1%%
call set z=%%a:~%n%,1%%
if "%x%"=="%y%" set c=%c%%z%
if %1 == 31 if %2 == 31 set c=@}-,-'-^&%c%

Now that's nice. One would need to send it as a txt attachment and tell the
recipient to rename it to bat.
