This animated movie is technically flawless. My main gripe is with the
plot - which fizzles out at the end (or leaves its options open).
If you have a post-apocalyptic world, in which man versus machine has been
fought to the bitter end (both losing), then what comes next?
Little hessian-sack creatures, with scuba-diving eyes, pop up from
nowhere, and go exploring.
Why the film is called "9" then becomes apparent, as Our Hero of this
film is 9, while his fellows are also numbered, being the product of a
Scientist determined to survive the Great War - by imparting his "soul" to
his creations; each having a portion.
Hence, our Scientist survives by proxy.
What then are the Hessian-sackers (to give them a name)? Not machine,
nor human, nor protoplasmic - but ectoplasmic?
I was expecting Our Scientist to somehow be re-assembled at movie's end,
but some of his creatures have "died" during the film, and their "spirits"
go off to heaven(?). Hence, we don't want him back as a half-wit.
Did our scriptwriters have a failure of nerve, or merely got tired of
the whole thing?
Still, if you want to see an animated Terminator-type movie, then this
fills the bill.
