I don't know about the Pom, but the Peke was Sun Yat Sen which belonged to
Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon's family. Sir Cosmo, his family, their servants
(including an Egyptian dragoman Sir Cosmo retained in Cairo on a whim) and
the dog were among the first to get on a lifeboat. IIRC, they were the only
passengers on that lifeboat. There was an unusual number of crewmen on
board...

R. Norris Williams recounted a tale of seeing a dog swimming near him in
the water shortly after the sinking. He learned later that someone had
gone below decks to open all the kennels.
That dog was... wait for it... a black French bulldog.
Incidentally, we see the bulldog in question in the film, being walked
on the aft well deck. "First class dogs come down here to take a shite."

I wonder if that's why (older) Rose was holding a
Pomeranian in her lap when she first arrived on the
site. My daughter has a Pomeranian and she is the
sweetest thing (thought I am a cat person myself!)
I also thought it intriguing the aspect of Rose's
character in later life that she needed to surround
herself with all her pictures wherever she went...
and so much other clutter when first seen in her
home environment. I don't know if that is residual
of the trauma of having lost so much so suddenly
that you want to hold on to whatever you can,
or if it was just a part of her personality, because
she is also bringing a lot of her stuff (paintings,
vases, etc.) on board the Titanic when the voyage
first begins...what does anyone else think?

The older Rose kept her pictures with her always because they were pictures
of her doing the things that Jack said that he and her would do.....they're
was one of her on the horse, with one leg on each side, and of a
rollercoaster in the background.....Jack helped her realize the precious
things in life and helped her see that life was so much more meaningful when
you live it...."make it count".....Jack opened her eyes to the world, and
she had been forever grateful for what he had done for her.....he always
remained in her heart.
This movie was the best movie that i ever saw, and I truly mean it.....I've
seen it twice, both times with my girlfriend (i'm 17), and I cried so hard
each time....I never cried like that because of a movie.....I guess it hit a
certain spot in me.....It makes you realize how special the people are in
your life and how you need to appreciate every second you spend with
them.....people influence each other's lives, and most of the time don't
even know it....Love is a strong emotion, and a lasting one as well....The
saddest thing about this movie though, is the fact that it actually
happened.....so many people, and especially the innocent children,
died....so many innocent souls were taken, and seeing the sweet unknowing
faces of the children in this movie was just to hard to take for me..Anyway,
cherish every day that you can see the sun come up, because life is short,
but it doesn't have to be empty....."Make it count"

Jay, well said! Jack showed Rose that love is more than about living
life missing and mourning the one you loved and lost, it's about
living life without fearing for the one you loved because if you truly
loved, you never lost him.
What a movie. :}

It seems to tie in with her joy of experiencing 'flight.' Adds a little
more to the use of "Come Josephine in My Flying Machine" and it also seems
to fit Rose's character if she were to become one of the first female
aviators.

I agree... I think that that photo (the one of the airplane) has very much
to do with her "flying" scene. By the way - I viewed it for my third time,
with my wife (her fourth) and she noticed that one of the photos in the
background is Rose graduating college. Pretty cool considering what her
mother said huh?

I have to agree with tung....
I think Rose, young and old, likes to have the decoration. However, i dont
believe that she went from color paintings to b&w photos in memory of jack.
I think that they both symbolize her wanting to get away from the stuffy,
restricted life she was leading. The modernistic and somewhat rebelious
painting by picasso and monet symbolize her need to live a colorfull life.
Later, after her colorfull life has been accomplished, she replaces the
paintings with real memories. thats what i think.

possible possibility: they didnt want to make the transition between the two
actresses cause they didnt want the hassle....

You can age and morph pictures with free software on a PC.
Let's say Rose had a "youth" period where she made a point of living, then
settled down to become a housewife when older. After the photo-ops.

It's worth noting, if it hasn't already been mentioned, that the
photographs we see are the ones Rose *chose* to bring with her to the
Titanic site. I think she would have deliberately selected pictures that
were closer in chronology to her youth, being that this was when she made
all the breakthroughs in her life that she and Jack had spoken of -- like
riding horses like a man, or going to the rollercoaster, flying a plane.
I'm sure that these moments had more meaning to her, because they were the
early ones, than the events of later in her life.
By the time Rose would be old enough to be in color photos, she would have
been well settled into her new life. What I see in the old photographs is
Rose very consciously doing these things like horseback riding as a
tribute to Jack, to honor his sacrifice. So it would be very appropriate
for her to bring *these* pictures with her in particular. Remember that
the row of photographs isn't meant to be a comprehensive survey of her
life. Each one has a very specific meaning, tied to moments in the film.

You'll notice that most of the pictures of Rose are of her in her prime.
There would be no reason for her to look like Old Rose at that time in her
life. Remember, she was only 17 when she was on the Titanic, so she still
had plenty of time before she would have started to look like Old Rose.
Some of the pictures did make her look older though, especially the one that
looked like a studio glamour portrait.

I don't know what you think, but you remember that Rose said she wants to
"just head out for the horizon"? I think she just wants to prove her point.
Anyway, my cousin has a different theory : she says that Rose is too afraid
to go places by sea because of her unfortunate incident and starts
travelling by air. That makes sense : remember how she was transported to
the fortune hunter's ship? By air! :)

I'm not disagreeing with the theory that Rose is afraid to go places by sea,
but I think there is a simpler explanation as to why Rose travelled to the
Keldysh by helicopter.
Remember Brock Lovett and his team were going well overtime and over budget.
If (old) Rose had travelled by boat, ship, whatever, it would have taken a
while to get there, thus making his expedition go even more over budget. I'm
sure it was Brock's idea that she travel by air.

I think you're right. There is a scene (it was right after they danced at
the party) that was edited out and this song was supposed to be playing at
that time. Or something like that. I have yet to look at the script and
find out, but I heard someone mention it before.

together. The scene helps to explain Jack's impulse to talk to Rose the
next day during the church service.

Later on, in the script when Jack dies, Rose looks up and sings "Come
Josephine" and a shooting star (Jack's soul) streaks across the
sky........so sad.
