Hi all. Has anyone else seen Kate's Holy Smoke yet? It came out on video
recently. I was rather unimpressed with the movie overall. It just didn't
thrill me. Kate is very affective, as always, but it wasn't enough to keep
me interested in the plot. I lost interest about half way through. Just
curious if anyone has watched it yet.
Tina.

Hi, Tina!

I saw it in a theater around the first of the year, after months of
keeping an eye peeled to see it as soon as it came to my area. When I offer
any public "review" of any movie, I like to follow a philosophy of "If you
can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". With that in mind,
I'll just say that - having been aware of the story's premise - I was
greatly looking forward to it. The premise really had tons of potential for
a really gripping battle of wills, a confrontation of two totally different
world-views, a cinematic platform via which Kate could have meticulously
unwoven Keitel's twisted and autocratic illogic, a victory of a free spirit
over a mind-warping mercenary. But IMHO it just never came within a
thousand miles of its potential, sad to say. Maybe if instead it were a
stage-play that focused on dialogue, a good director & writer could have
made it really excellent.

I would have loved to have had a chance to work on a play or screenplay
like that but, alas, Kate never called me... Maybe she lost my number?

Good thing I'm in touch with reality, eh? In any case, I did really
appreciate the photography - whoever did that had a great eye for color and
vivid images.

Oh, well, there's always next time... :)

Cheers,

I just watched Holy Smoke twice this past weekend.. Twice because the first
time I watched it, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. I found that I
rather liked the movie. It was rather odd, and the ending left something to be
desired, but Ruth's evolution was compelling, and Kate's performance quite
good. I think I've seen about all her movies, and her role in this movie was
completely unlike anything I'd seen before. I can see why she chose to do this
movie as a means to test her abilities as an actress. Even those critics who
absolutely detested the movie raved about Kate's stellar performance.

I could not agree with you more. Sometimes you read my mind! There was great
potential with the storyline, but the screenplay seems to fall short. It was
nice to see Kate do something different though. As always, your thoughtful
replies are greatly appreciated. Take care. Tina.

Ja, same here. I spent most of the movie going "Huh?" But I stuck with
it hoping the end would make some sense, much like I did with "Mission
Impossible". When I can't understand the story I also get bored.

Hard to argue with a person of your refined cinematic insights and
sensitivites. :)

(We gotta start working on Lotto numbers.)

> Sometimes you read my mind!

I *knew* your were going to say that!

If that's so, then I gotta re-plug the 3 other films I've hyped on a
different thread called "Other Leo Films (slightly OT)". If you haven't
seen them, I think you may enjoy one or more of them. (Please note that Leo
is in *only one* of the 3: the first one. The others just came up in
conversation.) If you enjoy any one of them 1/10 as I did, you are in for a
good time. If not, hey, caca happens, we'll have fun talking about our
differences too.

"Romeo & Juliet" with Leo DeCaprio and Claire Danes, directed by Baz
Luhrmann, 1996. Not at all what you'd expect, not by a long-shot - and very
well done. Claire Danes is beyond charming. Leo takes the role very
seriously and delivers a thoroughly convincing and very enjoyable
performance.

"Strictly Ballroom", also directed by Baz Luhrmann, 1993, Australian.
This totally oddball "slice of life" really goes a lot deeper than the
obvious bells & whistles. It makes you laugh and it makes you feel and
keeps you smiling in between. On top of some great characters and
portrayals, it also contains what in two days became my all-time favorite
performing-arts performance. Tons of fun for the whole family, or for the
most sophisticated critic. Great music too. Turn up the speakers.

"Les Miserables" (*specifically* the one starring Liam Neeson, Uma
Thurmond & Claire Danes) This is not a musical, this is a story, about as
well-told as a story can be. Excellence in every category of film-making,
and a great soiundtrack as well. What more can I say?

Gotta run!

Thanks for the recommendations. I will get Ballroom or Les Mis the next
time I rent a movie. I haven't done that in years! I actually wanted to
see Les Mis when it was out in theatres, but then I read a bunch of bad
reviews and I didn't go. Those critics! :)

If it's *that* rare an event, get em both! They're **totally** different,
but outstanding.

With Strictly Ballroom, just let your mind relax to enter a very bizarre
world, and you'll find some really beautiful things that you never expected,
all in the midst of a ton of fun. I've never been into watching dance, but
there's one performance in this film whose meaning within the plot far
exceeds mere dance alone, and is really beautifully powerful. And, okay, I
have a major crush on the lead actress, for the skill, acting,
believability, guts and pure intense energy she brings to the role. But
that's allowed. :)

> I actually wanted to see Les Mis when it was out in theatres,

There are several versions out there, including a musical. I'm speaking
*only* of the non-musical one with Liam Neeson, Uma Thurmond and Claire
Danes. If any serious professional critic trashed this film, I'm not
necessarily saying he or she should be canned from any job. Just taken out
and shot. Twice, just be sure.

Okay, maybe three times.

Gotta run, Moose! Tell Rocky that the FrankMan says, "Yo!"

If you are in the mood to watch Kate do a hell of a job I suggest renting
either Sense and Sensibility or Heavenly Creatures. Although S&S is a better
flick to watch, I enjoy her performance in HC as well.

Other notworthy performances...

Jude - TRAGIC story that tends to drag a bit. Kate's performance however is
pretty awesome.

A Kid in King Arthur's Court - Yes a cheesy Disney flick...but a good one of
Kate's IMO. She isn't a main character but when she is on the screen she
steals the show as Princess Sara.

Hamlet - Best performance I have seen of Ophelia. Also amusing to see Robin
Williams do Shakespere...

I am NOT a fan of Hiodeous Kinky. It is a LONG movie, somewhat drawn out. If
you are a Kate fan rent it though. Worth a run through...

We discussed this film a few weeks ago, and - though we're all big fans
of Kate - I think most of us would agree with this advice: rent it first for
a dollar to see if you like it, *before* spending anything more to own it.

Hi Corey Ann! I definitely liked Sense and Sensibility--and agree with you
about Kate's performance in Hamlet. She is my favorite Ophelia to date as
well. I hadn't realized she was in the Disney flick. I may check that one
out. Does anyone know if she has any other films coming out soon? I know
she's probably due to have her baby soon, but thought maybe she had
something done already that might be upcoming. Even if I don't always like
her films, her performances are always first rate.
Tina.

Hi, Tina and the gang:

Gotta go slightly OT to share with you all something that's too strange to
be anything but true - and who else but our group could I possibly tell?
Yesterday I saw a job listed on an Internet source, that I HAVE to apply
for, even though it's too far away to accept, and I'm not interested in the
position. Why? Because the hiring manager's name is Kate Dawson! (True!)

Where's my resume?! :) :)

Hey, my Main Moose!

> LOL, say if you're offered the job! :)

I'm already planning for the interview, even though I haven't been
contacted yet. I'll take along the Heart of the Ocean necklace I bought
from a mail-order company last year, which I'll keep well within reach in my
suit-jacket pocket, to elegantly whip out at the appropriate moment.
Perhaps that will make the very positive first impression I'm hoping for at
the interview. If so, I figure what the hell, so my briefcase will also
contain a charcoal sketch-pad, just in case. :)

Cheers,

The FrankMan

Good thinking. Also, be sure to wear a borrowed black coat, and
say "make it count" a lot. You'll make an excellent first impression!

I've always wondered about that. When Jack was sliding the couch to
prepare to begin sketching, he had *already* removed that coat, *and* his
suspenders were already dropped fully loose from his shoulders. Talk about
being a good Boy Scout and "being prepared". :)

> and say "make it count" a lot.

And other traditional sure-fire lines like, "Have you ever been in a 1912
Renault?" and "Do you come here often?"

> You'll make an excellent first impression!

I hope I can keep myself under control, and not go for too much movie
authenticity. When I walk into the building elevator, I'm afraid I might
feel an overwhelming urge to flip-off some security guard. Or maybe slam a
wooden bench thru a metal gate-door. Maybe even stuff a wad of $20's into
the interviewer's coat pocket. But, what the hell. Just last week I was
sleeping under a bridge - and now, here I am, at the grandest corporation in
the world, having an interview with these fine people. What are they going
to do? Fire me?

Oh, well, gotta go sharpen the ol' charcoal.

Cheers,

The FrankMan

P.S. I know, I know, if Tom Pappas is reading this, he'll tell me that
those weren't really "charcoal" sticks but technically "tempera crayons", as
james Cameron described them, but that would ruin the whole rhythm of the
gag. So sue me.

Yes, "Quills" is due out this November and is already said to be a contender in
this year's Oscar race. With Kate being menioned for yet another Oscar nod.
This is a movie about the Marquis De Sade after his imprisionment. This movie
is quite gothic though...

Also Kate finished "Enigma" this past April. Enigma is a WWII flick about the
"decoder" being stolen from a submarine.

Kate will be producing/starring in "Therese Raquin" next spring...

I've been searching for info on Quills on the web, and haven't had much luck.
Where did you hear that there is Oscar buzz about it? I'd be interested in
reading about it. It would be great to see Kate nominated for yet another
Oscar.

All I know is that I was disappointed when I saw that Quills is slated for
"limited release" even though my home city of Austin will most likely be
included.

About 3 weeks ago an issue of "Premire" and an issue of "Entertainment Weekly"
both mentioned it being so. The only thing holding this one back is the
"sadism" (sorry for the pun). It is a very gothic and gory (almost) movie.

Try Fox Searchlights homesite for Quills. I think it was there. I know I
found it once somewhere... *trying to remember*

Thanks.. I actually went on another hunt after posting my reply last night and
found the movie site. It has a link to a great review from I think it was
Salon magazine.
