Best books on silent movies?

Books are nice and I have a few, but it reminds me how fortunate we
are today to be able to actually view so many varied silent features
today (both at cinemas and at home).
We can thank our lucky stars for Brownlow, Shepard and the many others
who have devoted their lives to bringing us such a rich treasure to
behold.
Then there are the talents of Rodney Sauer and others like the very
young Garth Neustadter (did you hear his score for "The White Sister"?),
who bring a richness to these films through their musical talents.
There was a time when all you could have done was read about these
classics.
When I was a teenager back in the 1960s, watching "Silent's Please" (a
weekly series on television about silent films), I never dreamed that
years later, I would have seen most every single picture they featured,
and many others that I had never heard of.

I would add to that list Kevin Brownlow's The Parade's Gone By.
It's astonishing to think he was just some 20-something year old kid
when he wrote that.

Arthur Knight's classic 'The Liveliest Art' (1957) should not be
overlooked.
