"Kärlek Och Journalistik" ( Love And Journalism ) (1916) is probably
Herr Mauritz Stiller's earliest surviving oeuvre, a delicious comedy
that proves that even in those cold lands, the Nordics had something
similar to a sense of humour. This elegant film demonstrates the
elements one finds in Herr Stiller's later famous comedies. "Kärlek
Och
Journalistik" is a medium-length film, well paced and with a story
that
needs no updating and is still absolutely valid today. Journalism is
the subject but it's the fascinating world of old school journalism
with methods far different from today (though there were paparazzis
and
witty fräulein reporters and demanding editors back then too) when the
new longhaired technologies and their dangerous new machines are
revolutionizing and reinventing that old job.
The basics of Herr Stiller's later work are very recognizable in this
stylish Nordic comedy of intrigue, especially in the director's
handing
of complex situations and the choice of excellent actors like Frau
Karin Molander und Richard Lund who collaborated with the Finnish
director in many of his films.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because
this German Count must read a Teutonic tabloid.

Well, I was going to say, "thanks! added to my Netflix queue," but
they don't have it.
I think "oeuvre" may be misused there. "Oeuvre" means body of work. Of
course, the word shouldn't be used at all because of its atrocious
spelling and difficulty in pronouncing. But that's true of most of the
French language, isn't it?
I mean pronunciation. Difficulty in pronunciation. (Hey, don't get me
wrong: English is just as annoying of a language!)
Well they do have a few others by Mauritz Stiller.
The Saga of Gosta Berling (1924)
Erotikon (1920)
Sir Arne's Treasure (1919)
Which should I get?
I don't think I like any of those titles.
Oh well, if it's like most silent movies, they SUCK anyway.
Probably the best ones "diaf," died in a fire.
OK, admittedly I love Thief of Bagdad and I like Sunrise and Faust...
Passion of Joan of Arc is good, I guess. Liked Our Hospitality...
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
still, most of them suck, and there shouldn't be a separate newsgroup
for them, or separate other places on the web, separate categories and
genre-listings... they should just be called movies. Movies from the
1920s and 1910s. It's not like you couldn't go back and dub in some
dialogue anyway.
(And if that offends you, it's not like you can't just hit "MUTE" when
they do that, if they ever do that. I, personally, think it would be
cooooooool if someone did that. Especially if the voice acting was
good.)
Use some good American anime or American video game voice actors.
The reason why I said there shouldn't be an alt.movies.silent, or any
other special category for these kind of films, is because it
ghettoizes you. It ghettoizes what you like. It keeps you out of the
mainstream, away from new viewers, who don't even know these movies
exist, wihch means silent films will have even less of a future than
they're already guranteed to have.
Pretty good track:
