Would Gareth Hughes have wanted a star on hollywood,s walk of fame??.
In the latter part of his life, he left films and stage and devoted
his remaining years to charitable work
He has a lead role in EYES OF YOUTH1919 . The complete film is
available at YOUTUBE. . His acting is sensitive and excellent
A thank you to Sir M for pointing out my web site. It has been
completely redesigned, upgraded and now contains not only a number of
film clips but also audio of Gareth Hughes talking about his life and
several photo galleries.
I, too, don't believe Gareth would have approved of having a star on
the Walk of Fame any more than having a prize in his name at Swansea
Film Festival (another of Mr Guy's moves). Although I do think he may
have approved of the plaque we raised to his memory at Parc Howard
Museum in his home town and the nearby showcase display. The tribute
at the museum is about his "whole" life and pays as much attention to
his missionary work, the most important part of his life to him, as to
his former career.
I am utterly baffled as to why Mr Guy's web site and general project
works under the title "Desert Padre". Gareth Hughes was never know by
this title but another priest, Father John Crowley, was known as the
Desert Padre. A simple search on Google would have told Mr Guy that.
It is also baffling and rather disturbing that Mr Guy is allowing a
short play he has written to be published at the Swansea Film Festival
in which he appears to imply that his relative was a paedophile. How
can that possibly enhance Mr Guy's aim of paying tribute to Gareth
Hughes?
Having researched the life of Gareth Hughes for 19 years the
regularity with which Mr Guy releases inaccurate or incorrect facts
fills me with dismay. He recently claimed that among Gareth's closest
friends were J M Barrie, Bette Davis and Doug Fairbanks Jnr.. Not so I
am afraid. He met Barrie twice and was in awe of him. He coached Bette
Davis in the Welsh dialect for The Corn is Green and she was a
benefactor of his Indian mission but they were never close friends.
Doug Fairbanks, who was only 13 at the peak of Gareth's film career,
told me in 1990 that he couldn't recall having ever met Gareth.
For a great many years Gareth's relatives back in Wales believed the
myth and knew little of the truth. Mr Guy appears to be falling into
the same trap. He should also be very careful about some of the
material he is publishing on his web site - one film clip is still
under copyright to Universal!
Mr Guy also claimed that Gareth Hughes was in 'The Corn Is
Green' (1945). But he was only dialogue coach in that film.
