I've been asked to play solo theatre organ for an upcoming screening
of MGM/Lon Chaney's WEST OF ZANZIBAR. Seeing that the film was
released well after the advent of sound I suspect there was a recorded
score, and with my affinity for historical preservation and recreation
would like to see if it is transcribable. Anyone have available a dub
of the film with a period-recorded historical musical score on it?

Thanks! Dennis James

As one Dennis to another, I wonder of I am too late in answering this.
Are you asking for a DVD dub of the film, which I managed to tape off
Turner some years ago? It had a music & effects track, I seem to
recall. Or are you asking for a CDR dub of just the vintage soundtrack
itself? Behind the computer desk from which I'm typing now is a wall
with video shelves holding some 600 VHS tapes. The top two rows hold
silent films, from Chaplin c.1914 through the end of the silent era, c.
1930. If I can help you in any way on this, let me know.

P.S.-I felt privileged to hear your score for "Peter Pan" at the El
Capitan about 9 or 10 years ago.

After reading the previous posting, maybe the laserdisc I have of West
of Zanzibar has the original soundtrack for the movie. I copied the
laser to DVD-R. Only George Feltenstein, at what was MGM-UA when the
laser of this silent movie and the sound version of The Unholy Three
was made as a double disc, would know for sure. I thought the
soundtrack was added on using stock music when West of Zanzibar was
shown as part of the PBS MGM series Movies, Great Movies over 30 years
ago. If I am wrong, it is no problem to send you a DVD-R of the copy
of the laserdisc.

I've been in touch with Dennis James, and he tells me that he has
received a DVD dub from the presenters of the upcoming screening, so he
has what he needs.

Thanks to you all for the offers of help with WEST OF ZANZIBAR. I've
received a dub of the film with the Dr. WIlliam Axct compiled score,
and in the remaining days to the screening will be incorporating as
many of the themes as I can transcribe in time!
