It purports to be from a reel of nitrate made up of snipped/censored
scenes from films, found in a theater in pennsylvania. By the look of
it, the Penn censor didn't like bare legs very much! I find the clip
to be weirdly haunting, I guess in many of the cases, the little bit
that's been cut out is all that's left, which is so unbelievably sad
to contemplate, especially as some of the fragments are quite
beautiful to look at.
I'm a big fan of silent-era actresses, but I don't recognise a single
one in any of those clips. I wonder if anyone recognises any of the
performers, or any films the scenes might have been cut from
(unlikely, I know)

Yeah, the "convenient" thing struck me a bit as well, I'll stick up a
comment asking the guy who put the clip up for more information, if it
is true, there's got to be some kind of interesting story attached to
it, I would have thought. I couldn't find anything useful on google
about it.
I was particularly taken with the clip of all the legs under the
table! What's the story there, I wonder? The girl tied up at
3.18-3.19, she looks a bit like Colleen Moore, I tried freezing it
there, but I dunno, it's hard to tell.
If the story is a fraud, at least we know the perpetrator has seen a lot of
movies, starting with CINEMA PARADISO.
I'd be a little worried about anyone able to recognize those women seen only
from the waist down....
My favorite part is the boardwalk clip of the swimsuit models about halfway
through....r

What good is being an executive if you never get to execute anyone?
The legs under the table is from Garbo's THE TEMPTRESS. Great sequence- the
camera travels up a banquet table, it's all polite decorum. It then reverses
under the table, where all is frivolity. One of director Fred Niblo's more
notable creations.
I think there's even a flash of Dorothy Gish in Nell Gwynne.

Decolletage is what the censors called it.
Originally meaning bearing of the neck and
shoulder it also expanded to the lower area
of the body and concerns of exposure.
Cinema Paradiso was based in part on real
movie projectionists with authentic detail
sprinkled in.
Compilation reels with discarded censored
footage were probably kept by more projectionist
than we think, but the secret nature of them
(the discarded footage was supposed to
be destroyed) keeps a lot more from surfacing.
Here is a frame enlargement from the 35mm.

A thread on this fragment is at the silentcomedians.com forum.

Still unidentified, though.

I don't know who any of the actresses are but it is a hauntingly
beautiful little clip.

NITA NALDI, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Barrymore version (1920)
BRIGITTE HELM, Metropolis, (1927)
RENEE ADOREE, The Show, (1927)
There were a few others I recgonised.
I figure that most may have been from the smaller studios. Too much skin in
them.

This short film is a 2007 amateur production made for the 72 Hour
Film Festival competition. No technical skill is involved in making
such films and any artistic quality lies in the selection of the images
Just like a documentary. But those can be art too.
On their first date John and Mary get on
a double Decker bus with Bert and his
girlfriend. Bert and his girlfriend get on first
then John and Mary ascend afterwards.
The shot that came after and for years
appeared in prints was the group arriving
at the top and taking their seats.
Two shots that were censored appear
on the VHS copy of the movie I have
released by HBO/Thames. They show
Mary ascending the stairs from John's
viewpoint and we are able to see under
her dress as she reaches the top.
The next shot shows John with a look
of bewildered lust on his face.
These two shots were grainier than the
ones before and after, a sure sign of
restoration.
also: When HBO/Thames will transfer
their silent features and documentaries
to high-definition is still an unsolved
matter. Although I am aware of the
mountain of clearances and the vast
sums of money required, it would
still be a worthwhile effort.
