I find it interesting that your post has something of a mixed viewpoint- you
talk of the "worthless life of stardom " but also say "see the big names he
worked
with!" He most probably found greater satisfaction as a Missionary, but
that doesn't necessarily mean his former life was worthless.

I have never seen Hughes in anything, either, although I vaguely know
the outlines of his life. I see Mr. Lyons is writing a book on Hughes,
that ought to be interesting. One of the minor drawbacks of Cari
Beauchamp's book "Adventures of a Hollywood Secretary" is that she
*didn't* edit all Valeria's letters--Valeria herself was so interesting
that the Hollywood parts were almost a minor consideration. Perhaps
this book will be similar, as Hughes certainly led a fascinating life.
And I'm feeling a snotty sense of complacent glee in that I can
actually pronounce all the words on Mr. Lyons' website, nyah.

Well it is a mixed view point, I think Gareth felt his time at Pyramid
Lake was the best time of his life. He did though destroy most of his
press clippings and other things from his hollywood days.

Even more ironic that he's interred in a Masonic cemetery.
Frederica
And what is ironic about that- he was a Mason.

I was commenting on the current RC attitude toward Masons, as I know it
was extremely common for people to be members of both groups then.

I have been reading all your comments with interest.
Frederica is partly right in suggesting that Hughes's life is more
interesting than his films. What most people don't know is the level of
his Theatre work and his standing in the USA as an actor. Frederica -
you should be grateful that he was not born in
llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!
Vitaphone comments about the Motion Picture Home. Although Hughes
didn't actually "abandon" his career, the MPH was an obvious place for
him to spend his last years. the Home was open to anyone who had paid
their dues in their working lives and that included not just directors
and actors but all the way down to the girls who waited in the studio
commissaries.
Frederica seems to assume that Hughes was a Roman Catholic. Not at all.
Hughes was always connected with the protestant episcopal areas of
religion.
It has taken me 17 years of research to unravel his life, which is
quite complex in parts. The majority of information available in the
Public Domain is extremely misleading. The information contained in the
IMDB (note: not IMB as posted earlier by desert padre) has been updated
by myself. Also, the information at silentera.com and Greta de Groat's
Clara Kimball Young site has been supplied by myself.
It is quite easy to think you know about Hughes when, in fact, you know
very little or nothing at all. A relative of Hughes has recently been
supplying huge amounts of incorrect information to the Press in Wales
and in the USA because he has simply not done his homework. I have a
feeling that "Desert Padre" knows this person quite well.
The Gareth Hughes story is an extraordinary story and my website
contains only a tiny snapshot of that life. My book will be about the
man rather than the films. I will leave it to my good colleague Kevin
Brownlow and Dave Berry (author of "Wales and Cinema - the first
hundred years"), with whom I collaborated on the Gareth Hughes section,
to write about Hughes's worth as a film actor.
The Hughes story is truly remarkable and Stephen Lyons has been
researching his life since 1989. He has left no stone unturned and is
in the process of writing the official biography. He is without doubt
the authority on Hughes.
The Hughes story was told to me by a very dear actor, the late Martin
Griffiths from LLanelly (who met Gareth) which I related to Stephen. It
was fairly sketchy but we were both intrigued by the story and the
process of unraveling the life of Gareth Hughes began. Initial research
was amazing but we soon discovered that much that was written about
Gareth Hughes was incorrect and flawed.
Unraveling fact from fiction and assiduous regard to detail is a pre
requisite to any biographer's armoury. Stephen Lyons falls into that
categori. He is a principled professional who has amassed an immense
collection of material on Gareth Hughes and anybody wishing to know the
Gareth Hughes story should contact Stephen through his web site. Anyone
not doing so is tarnishing the memory of Gareth Hughes.
I have a huge archive of cuttings, letters and photos and also a short
colour film and two recordings of Gareth. What you see on my web site
is just a fraction of his life. The book will reveal just how
extraordinary his life was.
If you read my earlier posting you will see my views on some so called
"experts".
Hope that helps.
Perhaps you are a friend of Desert Padre?
For those who don't know... the Stonemother is a group of rocks to the
side of the pyramid in Pyramid Lake on the reservation where Gareth
spent many years. I have put a picture of the Stone Mother at
www.intothelonging.com/gareth/stonemother.htm for thos who would like
to see her. I took this photo in 2000. there is also a link to the
legend on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe website.
