a great short. What is "Nothing Matters"?
I see nothing on it, and I notice the website
says Anita Garvin is in it. Is it the same
film that is listed as "Always a Gentleman"
in the IMDB?

"Nothing Matters" circulated for a while on video with a bogus title
set which happens to have been taken from "Always A Gentleman." In
fact, the mismatched title set includes two different cast lists (the
second of the two being the correct one). I haven't seen the IMDb
listing, so I'm not sure which film it really describes. The film on
our set is reel 1 of "Nothing Matters." We removed the inaccurate
credits and made new titles to reflect the correct information.

this was his most creative period. Unfortunately it's also the period where
we're missing the most of his Educational silent films.

It is generally believed by most of the comedy mafia that the Educational
sound films are all out there somewhere so I'll list Hamilton's Educational

occassionally on TCM. Hamilton has a couple of bits in it.
THE VOICE OF HOLLYWOOD-1930-Tiffany-1 rl-Hamilton hosted an entry in this
series.
WEDDING BELLES-1930/31-Cavalcade Film Corp-2 rls?-I don't know much about
this one. MOMA is suppossed to have a print.
HOLLYWOOD ON PARADE -1933-Paramount-1 rl-Ham hosted this entry.
No longer a big star Hamilton returned to Educational and appeared in these
two final films for them.
POP'S PAL-1933-2 rls-
AN OLD GYPSY CUSTOM-1934-2 rls-
Hamilton's final film is an appearance in this tecnicolor all-star short
which shows up on TCM now and then. He died shortly after it was released.
STAR NIGHT AT THE COCONUT GROVE-1934-MGM-
I may be missing a title or two (or three) and would welcome any additions,
corrections etc..
Anyway the set that Dave Stevenson and the Looser than Loose guys have put
together sounds like a great intro to Hamilton's work.

EX-PLUMBER, which was in a package of Educational shorts that aired
here in the early seventies, was my introduction to Lloyd Hamilton.
While not the funniest comedy you will ever see, it has a little gag
involving a hunting trophy that made us kids yell with laughter because
(like many good gags) you don't see it coming and Lloyd's expressions
are just so right.

His Musical Sneeze is a Fox Sunshine comedy - am at work so I don't
have the exact release date in front of me. Ham does not appear in
"Punch of the Irish."

There was also a film shown at Slap 3 that had Ham in blackface (which
was a schtick of his) trying to break into a studio. It was not a
Hamilton film, but some sort of novelty.

dime back". After pocketing his ill-gotten loot he politely says "Thank
You". As I recall the rest of the film was absolutely putrid.

He appears this way in one of the installments of LIFE IN HOLLYWOOD,
a weekly series, circa 1927. If he had a broom with him in the clip you
saw, it was probably from this.

How are certain are you about BLACK WATERS being extant? This is one I've
wondered about but never been able to confirm.
I believe I've seen GOOD MORNING EVE. It's a Warner's short right? I
think I saw it at a Cinecon several years ago but don't remember Ham's part
at all. Do you remember anything about it?
He does also appear in tecnicolor in his final film STAR NIGHT AT THE
COCONUT GROVE (Dec 1934) which was released just before he died. He looks
pretty bad in that too. He does a hula dance bit in it.

Informed sources tell me it's lost, Brent or Richard will know better
than I. But Virginia appears in the lobby cards, or in some form of
advertising for it, so we know she was in it.

Yes, I knew Virginia was in it. Some years back Rob Farr assembled a cast
for it that included Ham, Virginia, Frank Coleman, Glen Cavender and Jimmie
Adams. Jack White directed and Cecil Myers was the cameraman.

footage existed, the entire film turned up later. They were pretty
straightforward in telling which films were considered lost & that they were
using stills and reviews as their source. Might be worth checking with the
authors- Michael Price might be still living- at least Midnight Marquee
brought out one of his new books last year.

My points of reference in these issues are minutely focused. I haven't
yet sat down and really worked on Virginia's filmography, I know which
films she was in (or was likely to have been in), but details still
escape my vise-like grip. Ergo, I pay close attention to these
threads. I shall crib liberally.

remembered seeing it as a kid.
I think that a reel or two of something from that book at around that
time period surfaced at UCLA recently. I think it was some two-color
footage of MAMBA, but I could be wrong.

It was restored as part of the Vitaphone Project and given a beautiful
new print from the Technicolor elements. I saw it at a Vitaphone
Project show at the Film Forum, and it's on one of the Warner Brothers
collection disks. One of the Busby Berkley collection discs.
