Just post it as a follow up.

--------
Quality is noted as: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent
(or some combination of the above)
Please note: Quality refers to the quality of the print/transfer on
the DVD.
It is not a critical judgment about whether it is a "good" serial or
not.
Others hereabouts will be glad to try to convince you that they alone
hold that knowledge.
--------------------
Date in parenthesis, e.g. (05/29/04) is the date the title was added
to this list.

3. - SECTION 03 - N O T E S

This list concerns itself with THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE SERIALS.

More specifically, Motion Picture serials are defined as having been
shot and released on motion picture film, not digital or analog video.

It deliberately ignores Television Series, Soap Operas and other
TELEVISION forms.

DEFINITION OF SERIALS -- There have been heated arguments about the
DEFINITION of a serial. There are many sources of such definitions,
but clearly, the modern motion picture cliffhanger "serial" starts
with the likes of "The Perils of Pauline" or "Fantomas." It evolved
in many ways including literature (most of Charles Dickens' books were
published as "serials" of one or more chapters per issue of a
magazine), radio shows and the modern television soap opera.

Star Wars was planned as a 9 part serial in 1974 and ended up as a 6
part serial in 2005. This is an "expanded definition" of a serial, so
this list concens itself exclusively with those motion picture serials
which consisted of relatively "short" chapters (roughly 15-30 minutes)
that were shown week by week in movie theatres around the world. They
tend to have "continued next week" or "cliffhanger" endings where the
hero or heroine is in danger that must be resolved in the following
episode. The "golden ages" of serials were between _approximately_
1900-1928 and 1936-1950. The eagle-eyed amongst you and those who are
dying to have something to argue about will find exceptions.

CHAPTERS -- The typical serial has "chapters" that are the length of
one or two 35mm Motion Picture "reels." A "reel" is defined as 1000
feet of 35mm film which currently runs approximately 12 minutes. So a
one-reel episode would be approximately 12 minutes, a two-reel episode
would run approximately 24 minutes. Typical serials chapters ran
about 18 minutes for some reason not clearly known.

HOMAGE SERIALS -- Technically, films like "Monarch of the Moon"
(2005-6) is NOT a serial, but a spoof or homage, even though it
emulates the form of a serial. It is included here in a special
section as an homage as are a number of other amateur or
semi-professional "serial-like" projects. Some of these projects were
shot using digital or analog video, but they are included here in
appreciation of the hard work they obviously represent and also as an
encouragement to filmmakers (or videomakers) of the future.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. - SEcTION 04 - QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

4.1 With the exception of Judex, Fantomas, Les Vampyrs, few "foreign"
(that is non-United States) serials are well-known.

There MUST have been serials made in the UK and certainly more made in
France than the ones mentioned. How about Germany? Sweden?

What are they?

4.2 What serials are missing from this list absolutely because they
are either overlooked or not available in any form?

5. - SECTION 05 - Special Thanks to:

The Serial Squadron (DVD-R)As of June, 2007 some titles are true DVD.
http://www.serialsquadron.com/index.html
-------------------------------------------
Note 1: DVD-R: Not technically "commercial" DVDs, but often
of high quality and relatively easy and less expensive to purchase.
They do require a special DVD player, since not all commerical players
will decode DVD-R or DVD+R.
--
Note 2: Warning! Serial Squadron has been known to "tamper" with
serials by adding color and other features that were not in the
original release.
There seems to be no justification for this, except that the guy who
runs Serial Squadron seems to think that it is cool, so "caveat
emptor.")
If the serials were released in TWO versions it would be more
acceptible:
a) original, unaltered version
b) inauthentic new version with whatever nonsense Serial Squadron
feels like adding.
Buyers would then have a choice.
--
Note 3: Serial Squadron often solicits donations from the public to
do "restoration" work, but has failed to deliver these in a timely
fashion. There is much controversy around this practice, so be aware
that if you contribute you may not receive the serial for a long time.
--
Note 4 (6/2007) Apparently many Serial Squadron releases have bonus
material like commentaries, bios, trailers, etc.
--
Note 5 (6/2007) Several titles are now available as true DVDs. They
are noted when the information is available.

7. SECTION 7 - Listing by TITLE only - Alphabetical - 155 Titles
(06-13-07)

Most of these titles are available from more than one distributor on
the list above.
If someone would like to suggest the BEST VERSION of each of these,
please post them and they'll be added to the list.
(NOTE: December 2006 - beginning to add multiple distributors
following title in this alphabetical listing. The information will be
incomplete for a long time!
NOTE 2: December 2006 beginning to add DVD-R ONLY titles to this list.
They will be tabulated as a separate total. They are clearly marked as
DVD-R ONLY meaning either DVD-R or DVD+R to save space.
NOTE 3 December 2006 - when a serial is available on both Commercial
DVD and DVD+/-R, ONLY the commercial DVD source will be listed. After
all, why purchase an inferior version. The only exception to this
would be factual information that a DVD+/-R is superior to an existing
commercial version)

09. SECTION 9 - Homage Serials.

Some recent filmmakers have made considerable efforts to produce
"homage" serials. Anyone with further information is welcome to post
it in alt.binaries.serials for inclusion.

The Mythic Homage is "Captain Celluloid Vs the Film Pirates" a Four
part silent, B&W serial produced in about 1965 (shot over a long
period of time) by a group of serial fans in and around New York City
(including William K. Everson, Alan Barbour and others).
It was shot in 16mm film. It was re-scored in 2005 using
sound-effects and cues from Republic Serials.

10. SECTION 10. OLD SPECIAL COMMENTS.
Old special comments will be moved here to make the beginning of this
list shorter.

.........................
PAST SPECIAL COMMENTS:
These comments are "archived" at the end of the list to keep the
primary portion of this list much shorter and easier to read.
..............................

February 2008 --SPECIAL COMMENTS

None

January 2008 -- SPECIAL COMMENTS
The label [Commercial] has been added in the alphabetical
listing of distributors covered.
This is intended to differentiate between small, independent
hobbyists who make serials available and large(r) commercial companies
that release serials from studio materials. Usually there are
noticeable differences in quality with commerical releases, but not
always.

December 2007 -- SPECIAL COMMENTS
Added Count of Silent Serials divided by US and Foreign

November 2007 -- SPECIAL COMMENTS

Added updated Alpha Videos (cf.Prince Barin)

October 2007 -- SPECIAL COMMENTS

None

AUGUST 2007 -- SPECIAL COMMENTS

a) Section 3 - NOTES - has been partially re-written. It now includes
comments on the nature of "Motion Picture Serials," film, digital
media, and lengths.

JULY 2007 - SPECIAL COMMENTS

a) All but the two current months of special comments are now moved to
SECTION 10 so that this will be easier to read. It is getting to be
LONG!
b) Table of Contents has been moved to the TOP of the file. The
statistics section (estimates of number of serials available, etc.)
and these special comments have be re-labelled SECTION A and SECTION B
The table of contents has also been, we hope, "simplified." More
information is moved into the main listings so the Table of Contents
is now shorter.

JUNE 2007 - SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) For those who don't bother to read this entire document which IS
getting fairly long, it is helpful to note that the list is dependent
upon contributions mostly from readers of alt.binaries.serials. It is
not intended to be an academic research project. It IS intended to be
a convenience to collectors and hobbyists who are looking for a
favorite serial on DVD or other source. It is provided as a friendly
gesture by a small group of hobbyists to another group of hobbyists
and other interested parties. It is produced for fun and to encourage
joy and happiness. [Please note January 2007 SPECIAL COMMENTS, (c)
below].
-
b) NEW SECTION: Homage Serials. A new section of "homage serials" has
been added as SECTION 9 at the end of this list. An "homage serial"
is a non-professionally produced serial that has the spirit of the
classic sound serials of c.1929-c.1956. The classic example is
"Captain Celluloid Vs the Film Pirates" which was produced by a group
of hobbyists in and around New York City as a tribute to Republic
Serials. But there are others. Three have been noted. Please feel
free to post information about homage serials you may know of or that
you made yourself.
-
c) SOME SERIALS ON THIS LIST MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE ANY MORE. Some are
discontinued. As noted in the introduction, HD and BLURAY serials are
imminent. This means that many old versions will be discontinued and
new ones will be substituted. This happened with 35mm Film, 16mm Film,
8mm Film, BETA, VHS and Laserdisk and VCD. No Beta or Laserdisks are
currently sold new. However, DVD Is the format that one can find most
easily... at the moment.

MAY 2007 = SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) a new and short section of titles of serials known to be "missing"
from this list either because we're not aware of their being available
on DVD or because no one has issued them is started. It is section
number 8 in the Contents.

JANUARY 2007 = SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) Some DVD-R titles are added in to the Alphabetical list at the end
of the listing by Distributor. As high-definition DVDs come into the
market, it is inevitable that some titles will be replaced by HD or
BluRay DVDs. However, many rare titles are only available on
low-quality (MPEG-1)DVD-R, DVD+R CD-R and CD+R. Common sense says that
these are better than nothing.
-
b) VHS - there are numerous rare serials -- especially Silent ones
that are available ONLY on VHS, a now technically defunct format. If
you have information on what is available, go to c) below.
-
c)Please post follow ups with additional information.
