Yes and no. There is a program called DeCSS. It breaks the DVD
encryption so that people who run Linux can use their DVD roms with
their Linux boxes. The side effect of this program is that if have the
know-how, you can transfer the now-cracked DVD movie into an mpeg. The
program has now been outlawed, a hacker magazine even got sued for
publishing the source code, and I think this program is hard to come by.
You also need to know what you are doing, when attempting to do this. To
make a DVD bootleg, that is, cracking a region 2 DVD and making it into
a 'bootleg' DVD, you also need a DVD burner. At this time they are VERY
expensive. Having said all that, it's not impossible to do this, just
difficult and expensive. I think I left out some information, due to the
fact I'm not a computer brainiac. If anyone knows of which I speak, did
I get the gist right? I think I did?
The newest Toho DVDs are only single discs priced at ¥6000 each. These are the
extras that are included on each disc:
Godzilla (1954): Akira Ifukube interview (50 minutes), trailer, cast photo
gallery, audio commentary by Akira Takarada, BGM track (only voice track),
16-pg. booklet.
Rodan (1956): trailer, audio commentary by Teisho Arikawa, cast, movie and
dinosaur picture book photo gallery, BGM track (only voice track), 16-pg.
booklet.
Birth of Japan: trailer, cast photo gallery, overseas movie program, BGM track
(only voice track), 16-pg. booklet.
Personally, I'd rather pay an "unreasonable" price in order to get "a whole lot
of extras on separate discs and other stuff" (like the upcoming Gamera DVD box
set with English subtitles).

but do the Toho G movies come w/ Eng subtitles? If they did, then price
isn't an issue. I'd pay nearly anything. If they don't...

I wonder if Sony will release a comparable set of DVDs here as the
aforementioned are Region 2. Mike Schlesinger hinted that something is in the
works whether it is through them or someone else.

Bah, let Sony worry about the Toho titles they already have the rights for*.
I'm sure someone else would be interested in picking up G'54. In addition to
their Toho titles, I'm still waiting for them to put out the rest of their
Harryhausen films (FIRST MEN IN THE MOON is just screaming for a widescreen
release), and I'm *really* waiting for them to start putting out their
Hammer films on DVD.
* MOTHRA, THE H-MAN, THE BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, REBIRTH OF MOTHRA III, and
GODZILLA VS MECHAGODZILLA '93, for those who don't know what I'm talking
about (I'm sure you knew, Armand!).

Right-o. But there is also something allegedly in the works with the Showa
series by SOMEBODY. If you recall, Schlesinger said they have new prints
(including the G '54 one shown at G-FEST 2000 to do stuff with.) We'll see.

That being said, he DID intimate that there is something brewing with
another company for the Showa films. Didn't say who though. Image?
Criterion? Time to go and bug some DVD companies and see who flinches....
