DOCUMENTARIES FROM THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM
5:30pm: Artists in person; curated by Amy Corbin and Laura Merians. These
three thesis documentaries from the UCB Graduate School of Journalism
exhibit a combination of innovative personal perspectives and solid
journalistic research. Edward Wong's COMRADES explores the lives of two men
involved in revolutionary movements, struggling to apply political ideology
to societal realities. Structurally the documentary parallels their
experiences across time and place, from Maoist China to the Red Guard youth
movement in San Francisco's Chinatown. In HIGHWAY OF DREAMS, Nandi Pointer
investigates the impact of freeway construction and suburban flight on a
community in West Oakland. Focusing on her family's experiences, while
drawing on a wide range of historical sources, Pointer paints an eloquent
picture of the freeway as a modern railroad, dividing communities and
increasing socioeconomic stratification. DANNY AND THE SCATMAN by Peter
Nicks provides another story of parallel lives, young and old. This time,
it is a boy who aspires to be a filmmaker, and an accomplished jazz
musician, both with speech impediments. Their creative passions,
lighthearted approaches to life, and force of will allow them to surpass

SUNDAY EVENING WITH BRAKHAGE
7:30pm: Each Sunday evening Stan Brakhage is host for a gathering of
friends and film buffs to view films and videotapes from his incredible
collection. Often viewers will see a world premiere of the latest Brakhage
film. Most evenings those in attendance stay after the showing to talk
about a wide variety of subjects with Stan. These gatherings are held in
room N141 of the Fine Arts building on the Boulder Campus of the University

British documentarian John Grierson records vanishing indigenous crafts of
the United Kingdom. A NAVAJO WEAVER (1966): From the series NAVAJOS FILM
THEMSELVES, which tried to resolve the bias of ethnographic film by
training Navajos to make their own short films. Susie K. Benally films her
mother, Alta Kahn, preparing to weave a rug, shearing sheep, preparing the

CONTEMPORARY SILENT FILMS BY PETER HUTTON
5pm: Films to be screened include BUDAPEST PORTRAIT (MEMORIES OF A CITY)
(1984-1986) and LODZ SYMPHONY (1991-1993). Jon Jost: "It is perhaps
Hutton's central gift that he is able, without sentiment or false
nostalgia, to render the present as past, and to subtly provoke us into
stirring the undercurrents of our memory, thus conferring an intimate sense
of value on the passing shadow of life. It is easy, in the absence of
actors, of ‘spectacle,' of narrative, to say Hutton's films are but diaries
of daily life. But this misses the heart of his work. Hutton's images
hardly constitute a compendium of the ordinary, the daily, even if they are
distilled from that realm. And his ‘stills' are hardly still, even when the
camera remains static. Seen as frozen ‘stills,' these images lose exactly
those transient qualities for which Hutton consciously looks. Where the
photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson seizes on the significant moment, Hutton
looks for the passage of time. He says his films are all in progress: they
are never finished, only small and imperfect slices of an ongoing
continuum. Whether revealing the dignity in the hesitant awkwardness of a
person's face or finding beauty in the abstract dance of sun and shadow
playing across a wooden chair, Hutton–with a marvelous sense of
selectivity–extracts the heart of things and leaves the rest behind."

LAWRENCE JORDAN PROGRAM I
7:30pm: Lawrence Jordan retired from the Faculty of the San Francisco Art
Institute last May after thirty years of distinguished teaching. Jordan
inspired literally hundreds of aspiring filmmakers, and he has been a
pivotal figure in the blossoming of Bay Area personal or avant-garde cinema
since relocating here in 1955. The SF Cinematheque and Pacific Film Archive
celebrate the life work of this unique artist with four programs drawn from
his body of 40 films selected by himself, his long-time colleague George
Kuchar, and Cinematheque curator Steve Anker. Tonight George Kuchar selects
THE OLD HOUSE, PASSING (1967) and THE APPARITION (1976), two live-action

LUTHER PRICE IN PERSON
Patrick Friel: "The super-8films of Luther Price are startling works, both
in their construction and their imagery. Various means of distressing and
manipulating the footage gives the already small gauge film an increased
sense of fragility. this imparts a particular beauty and power to Price's
images, which are alternately quiet and lyrical, graphic and shocking.
Price's found footage films in particular exemplify this duality between
the fragile nature of the film medium and its ability to create powerful
and disturbing meanings. his source materials are occasionally color faded,
scratched, or washed out. Price manipulates his footage further by
repeating shots, editing in images upside down, and including visible
splice marks and frame lines. The quick editing in several films wreaks
havoc with the soundtracks of the found materials, creating a staccato
jumble of barely discernible or indecipherable words and phrases. Add to
this the fact that a number of Price's films exist only as originals, with
their many splices seemingly wanting to break at any moment, and you have a
cinema perpetually on the brink of collapse, both metaphorically and
literally." Price: "I promised myself I wouldn't leave Boston until I made
my dent…That was 20 years ago…Time roles and unravels…I've always tried to
collaborate with the situation here and I continue to try and participate…"

8:30pm: The expressionist masterpiece FAUST (1926) was the last of F.W.
Murnau's German super-productions. The film was shot in stunning
chiaroscuro black and white by the great Karl Freund, and starred Emil

LARRY JORDAN: A MOSAIC OF PERSONAL SELECTIONS
7:30pm: Larry Jordan in person. The short films presented tonight were
selected by Larry Jordan and Steve Anker, Director of San Francisco
Cinematheque, on the occasion of Jordan's retirement from the faculty of
the San Francisco Art Institute. The program is focused on Jordan's
complex, magical collage animations, which largely draw on Victorian
engravings to create dreamlike fantasies, film-poems, and allegories. They
have been compared to "a Joseph Cornell box come to life," and in fact
Jordan worked with collage-master Cornell in the sixties. Jordan has
remarked, "The basic act in my work is of freeing the objects from the
chains of convention and connotation. The whole thing is symbolic of the
surrealist philosophy, which, by definition, is inexplicable." Central to
the Bay Area film community since 1955, and one of the founding directors
of Canyon Cinema Cooperative, Jordan is a prolific artist whose unique work
also will be showcased in three programs at the San Francisco Cinematheque
on March 19, 23, and 26. Works to be screened tonight include DUO
CONCERTANTES (1964), OUR LADY OF THE SPHERES (1969), ORB (1973), ONCE UPON

CHROMATIC ARTICULATION: FILMS BY ARTHUR AND CORINNE CANTRILL
8pm: Australian filmmakers Arthur and Corinne Cantrill will introduce a
program including 3-colour separation films filmed on regular and hi-con
B&W negative and printed onto Eastmancolor stock, generating highly
saturated plays of out of gamut colour. They are CITY OF CHROMATIC
INTENSITY (will colour exist when there is no-one left to see it?), GARDEN
OF CHROMATIC DISTURBANCE (does colour exist where there is no light?), and
CITY OF CHROMATIC DISSOLUTION. Also AUTUMN STUDY: scenes in the house and
garden are filmed to suggest a tension between elegance and obsessive
repetition, underlined with repeated passages of music and garden sounds.

discontinuous frame-by-frame film of a coastal scene intercut with a

DE WALKURE (THE VALKYRIE)
9:10pm: Steve Seid: "DE WALKURE (Frank and Koen Theys, 1989) is part two of
an irreverent and visually inventive adaptation of Wagner's DER RING DES
NIBELUNGEN. This arduous labor has been accomplished by Flemish artists
Frank and Koen Theys, whose earlier work, THE RHINEGOLD, angered some and
intrigued others among the keepers of the Ring. This sequel is no video
transposition of the classic opera, but a fully realized reinvention that
casts the action within pliable electronic space. Considering its reduction
to an 85-minute drama, Wagner's narrative has been left intact; we see the
raging Wotan, the vengeful Hunding, the star-crossed Sieglinde and
Siegmund, an obdurate Fricka, and the torn Brunnhilde. The Theys' interest
is not in Wagner, per se, but in their interpretation of Wagner.
Personalizing the themes of obedience and power, love and loss, they see
Wotan representing a fading culture; Sieglinde and Siegmund seek liberation
from this patriarchal force and at one point merge bodies, forming a being
with a woman's head and a man's voice. During their fearsome ride, the
Valkyrie are depicted as a troop of inflatable sex dolls, grotesquely
expressing their dual nature. In DE WALKURE, the Theys have employed
video's properties, fashioning a clever and audacious work that rings

7:30pm: Curator Paul Willemsen in person. Steve Seid: "There are no tulips,
Belgian chocolates, or lowlander windmills, no plays on cliches and nothing
provincial in these works by Flemish media artists. Rather, it is a worldly
lot, savvy about issues both EC and PC, and sustained by a
cross-disciplinary mix of visual arts, pop music, dance, opera, and film.
Tonight's richly varied program illustrates the rigor, originality, and
aesthetic shrewdness of Flemish experimental media arts. Whether it be the
Beirut-based plea for political change brilliantly mapped across the music
video form in Hänzel and Gretzel's BIBA NON BIBA (1994), or the strange
anthropological tale of an inebriated singer from Ecuador in Peter
Brosens's EL CAMINO DEL TIEMPO (1993); the spiraling symmetry of Ana
Torfs's dizzying CONDITION (1995), or the unruly story of everyday
surrealism in Karen Vanderborght's WHAT DOES SHE SEE WHEN SHE SHUTS HER
EYES (1995/96), these contemporary works have no problem arguing that
objects [of art] are always bigger than they appear in the rearview

rising hot air variably refracts the light reflecting from the landscape.

printer analysis of movement in footage shot 20 years previously, which is
also an investigation of the ways the human face is read and recognised.
ARTICULATED IMAGE, a discontinuous frame-by-frame film of a banana palm lit

THREE WHO DARED: BURKE, WILLS, AND AMUNDSEN
7pm: The BBC and Westdeutscher Rundfunk co-funded producer Michael Latham's
series TEN WHO DARED (1976), consisting of ten dramatized adventures of
various explorers dating from Columbus to Amundsen, each approximately 50
minutes in duration. Characterized by outstanding location cinematography
using hand-held cameras, ethnographic elements, and narration based on
actual diaries, the series consisted of a chronicle of travels in
difficult-to-film areas on several continents. The series is far better, in
both cognitive and affective senses, than many other historical ed films of
the period. A year ago, almost to the date, we showed David McCallum's
CHARLES DOUGHTY and ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT, directed by Fred Burnley, who
died from a lung disorder caused by exposure to bat guano in an enclosed
cave while making the film. Tonight's film were made, again, under trying
circumstances. BURKE AND WELLS: 1860 (Tony Snowdon, 1976): Erstwhile stills
photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones, and lately husband of Princess Margaret
was also a filmmaker, and here, teamed with master cinematographer Gary
Hansen, he captures the fanciful and awful story of these two legendary
Australian explorers on their ill-fated expedition from Cooper's Creek to
northern ocean, filmed in the glorious outback. Also ROALD AMUNDSEN: 1911

part of EVIDENCE, a clandestine manuscript by Vancouver poet and visual
artist Mike Schertzer. Known for his ability to deposit an audience into
another world, whether they want to go or not, Schertzer uses visual
collages assembled from found-slides, film trailers, and other sources
edited into a fluid visual counterpoint to the text by Vancouver video
artist Joel Snowden, effectively creating a post-narrative world that is
both frightening and seductive. This will be the only Vancouver performance
so don't miss it! Mike Schertzer is probably best know for setting the
record for the longest reading of original work in Canadian history (10
hours). His published books of poetry include SHORT FILMS FROM THE 14TH
CENTURY, and A PERSONAL DICTIONARY. His collection of negated (overpainted)
books (the Negatextual Resource Center) and examples of his unique collage

nonfiction filmmaking known as cinéma vérité. Covering the period between
1958 and 1968, when documentary film was throwing off its heavy technical
ballast and discovering its subjective freedom, Wintonick's film follows
the geographic development of the genre, from the Cinéma Direct movement in
Quebec and Cinéma Vérité in France to Candid Eye in Canada and Free Cinema
in the United Kingdom. Through interviews with the prime practitioners of

graduate, took a job as a marketing assistant at Columbia House, the
grandaddy of record clubs. Apparently, his qualifications for the job
consisted of being a fan of the alternative rock group Nirvana, which was
in the process of changing the face of the music industry. Somehow, he
managed to videotape his entire tenure there, and the result is a personal
video journal that puts a whole new spin on corporate America. Hired for an
entry level position, circumstances conspire to create a short climb up the
corporate ladder for our hero/videomaker. Soon, Chris’ usefulness to the
mail-order giant becomes apparent; he finds himself in the hub of the
creation of the grunge catalog. Clueless bosses, feuds between the “suits”
and the "talent"...Wilcha molds his 9-to-5 job into a hip, riveting and

story of the Hacker family and their role in the underground rebellion

VISITING ARTIST JERRY ORR
In 1975, Jerry Orr co-founded Berks Filmmakers, Inc., a nonprofit media
arts center in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1977, he became the administrative
director. He has worked in Super 8 and 16mm film since the 70s, and has
more recently added video and digital media to his art. He has exhibited
his films throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Europe.
Mr. Orr will be present to show a collection of his work. Mike Kuchar:
"Jerry Orr is an audio-visual alchemist. He does with the two-dimensional
image of film and video what Einstein has done to the three dimensions of

ETUDES SUR PARIS (1928)
7:10pm: Charles Goldstein on piano. André Sauvage's beautiful photographic
study of Paris is an insider's tour for sure: only un vrai Parisian would
devote so much time to the canals and locks, the barges and workers of what
the locals know (or knew) to be a maritime city. Sauvage's camera also
knows well the odd sign painted on a building, the corner cafe, the
evocative empty street, the neighborhoods explored one by one because each
is unique. Paris is perhaps rivaled only by New York as a city whose every
avenue and park is familiar in a very literal sense, family, and in the way
that both reveres and takes the loved one for granted. For the little dog
we see running down an embankment and jumping into the Canal St.-Martin,
for the cop who walks slowly through the Jardin du Luxembourg, for everyone
else caught unawares on camera, Sauvage films this city because it is
Paris, and it is home. The Pacific Film Archive is located at 2575 Bancroft

seats of a 19th-century opera house in Manaus, Brazil, and from a
stationary camera position photographed the reactions of the audience to a
choral mass. At 3pm: Errol Morris's FAST, CHEAP AND OUT OF CONTROL (1997):
Morris and his Oscar-winning cinematographer, Robert Richardson, use
diverse film formats as well as stock footage and clips from old films to
create this multinarrative work of subtly related common themes, with
characters who include a lion tamer, a topiary expert, and robotics

HAND-PROCESSING: THE METHODS AND THE MADNESS
12 noon: We are pleases to have hand-processing guru extraordinaire Ken
Paul Rosenthal in person to present this intensive and indispensable
workshop. In this comprehensive and briskly paced afternoon, you'll gain a
practical and theoretical understanding of hand-processing motion picture
film with an emphasis on experimentation. Basic light and color theory, the
material structure of film, and the photochemical process that leads to an
image are covered, as well as various 8mm and 16mm tank methods. You'll
also be exposed to the effects of time, temperature, agitation,
pushing/pulling, and alternative developing techniques such as solarization
and cross-processing. Your guide on this journey is Ken Paul Rosenthal.
Rosenthal studied film at the San Francisco Art Institute, and received his
MA in Interdisciplinary Arts from San Francisco State University. His film
SPRING FLAVOR won the award for Experimental Process at the Ann Arbor Film
