Subject: The Mutual Rushes - Where are they now?

What's been the fate of the Mutual rushes?  Are they now in the control the
Douris Corp?  I know that everyone on this newsgroup would like to see more
of them but unfortunately there's likely not enough interest among the
general public to make a release of some more of them financially feasible.
If this is the case then has Douris, or whoever the owner / holder is, gone
to the expense of transferring the nitrate film to safety stock?

About the only way I can think of any more of the rushes seeing the light of
day would be to use some of them to pad out a laserdisc release of the
Mutuals.  For example the Shepard discs use only about 40 minutes of the 60
minutes available on one side of a disc.  The remaining 20 minutes could be
used for rushes.

According to Kevin Brownlow, theMutual outtakes are sitting in their respective
cans decomposing into the ages.

I have been fortunate enough to see the rest of the slates from the Mutual
footage and let me say that David Gill and Kevin did a most remarkable job in
putting together part one of UC because the footage, while special because it
is Chaplin, is just more of the same.  Certainly, there are slight nuances here
and there but after a while, it became a bit laboured watching them.

The best representative scenes from Mutual are included in UC; we have not been
deprived of anything.

Does that mean that Brownlow has them?

Crooner asks if Kevin Brownlow still has the rushes of the Mutual  outtakes.
The answer is that the films are back with the owners, formerly Rohauer.

Are there video transfers of all the outtakes?

According to Unknown Chaplin - all the original prints, including the rushes of
the Mutuals are safely stored in a vault at the Chaplin Estate in Vevey.  Well,
that was the impression I got when they show in the video all those film cans
stored - I think they refer to it as being a vault Chaplin had.   But this does
conflict with the openning from his daughter, Geraldine, who says some of the
rushes were kept preserved by somebody in Kansas City.

Now I want to know where they are too!

Lori :)
