World-class mountain biker nabbed in local pot bust

June 19, 2009 at 12:21 pm by Alan Wechsler

It may not be shocking that mountain bikers smoke pot. But the amount
that former mountain biking competitor Melissa Giove was found to be
hauling in a trailer would make for a hell of a joint.

Giove was arrested Thursday along with Wilton filmmaker and landscaper
Eric Canori with a whopping 400 pounds of pot, drug paraphernalia and
$1 million in cash. They were arrested in Wilton by state and federal
authorities, through the use of a confidential informant and a long
investigation.

Giove, now 37, was said to be the fastest woman mountain biker in the
world a decade ago. At age 24, reports the Times Unions Leigh
Hornbeck, she held a dozen corporate endorsements and had an income in
the high six figures. She also wore a dead pirana around her neck and
the ashes of her black lab in her sports bra.

=v= The defense argues that the pot and money were planted
in the vehicle, possibly by the police. Missy shoulda stuck
to bikes, where it's harder to plant hundreds of pounds of
contraband without someone noticing.
