Man robs bank, gets away on mountain bike

A man dressed in a sport coat and who rode a mountain bike managed to
rob a Norton Shores bank Wednesday and get away with an undetermined
amount of cash, police said.
As of late afternoon Wednesday, authorities were still unable to
locate the suspect who walked into the Fifth Third Bank, 710 Seminole,
at 11:48 a.m. He "implied he had a weapon," jumped over a counter and
grabbed wads of cash, said Norton Shores Police Detective Lt. Tim
LaVigne.
"He made some statements. He implied that he had a weapon, but nothing
was seen," LaVigne said.
"He jumped over the counter and started taking cash out of a cash
drawer."
No one was injured during the incident, LaVigne said.
"He fled out the door and rode off on a bike," he said.
Several witnesses saw the man leave on the bicycle.
The suspect may have been covered in red dye at some point after he
fled because a dye pack hidden in the money the man took may have
activated, LaVigne said.
Authorities searched the area for some time trying to locate the
suspect, but he was still at large.
Some money was discovered in the area during the search for the
suspect, LaVigne said.
Muskegon Heights Police assisted at the scene.

Vandeman is quite the idiot - riding a mountain bike does not make
one a "mountain biker" any more than driving a car with racing stripes
makes one a race-car driver.

Presumably the guy used a mountain bike so he could ride over curbs
and do other things that might be hard on a road bike but that are
very useful when trying to escape from the police.
If Vandeman objects to bank robbers using mountain bikes, maybe he
would be willing to market very rugged bicycles that are not
mountain bikes for use by criminals in urban environments.

If the guy was robbing a bank, I don't doubt that he probably
stole the bike too, making him definitely not a mountain biker, just
a common thief. Any type of bike would do. Except that a racing
bike usually has clip-in pedals which are difficult to use with street
shoes, thus the MTB choice with platform pedals. He was in sports
jacket which implies that he once probably owned a car too and had a
good job. These are signs of our times, not signs that mountain
bikers are outlaws.

=v= When I rob banks I like to use a rugged folding bike
so I can do a quick-change. While all the police are out
there looking for a bicyclist, I'm walking around with a
Samsonite suitcase and a sack with a "$" printed on it,
looking totally innocent.
=v= Seriously, though, most of this kind of crime is done
by car, and for that reason proximity to highways means more
of this type of crime (though much of that crime tends to be
car-related, e.g. car thefts).

Police Seek Armed, Bike-Riding Gang in West Philadelphia

Philadelphia police are looking for a group of armed,
bicycle-riding bandits who robbed several state liquor stores
and bars over the past two days in West Philadelphia.
No one has been injured in any of the holdups.
Southwest detectives said that surveillance video shows the
robbers were armed with Uzi or Tec-9 automatic weapons.
Witnesses say the bandits escaped on black "BMX" style bicycles.
The most recent robbery occurred on Wednesday, at Smitty's
Milcreek Tavern, in the 600 block of North 52nd Street. Another
bar that was targeted apparently by the same bandit was the
Caprice Villa, at 50th and Market Streets.
State stores located at 51st Street and Lancaster Avenue, and
at 46th Street and Lancaster Avenue, were also robbed by men
fitting the same description, making a total of at least four
robberies in 48 hours.
Witnesses say the men wore face masks and hoodies during the
robberies.

West Phila. Man Charged in "Uzi-Plus-Bicycle" Robberies

Philadelphia police have charged a West Philadelphia man in
connection with a string of robberies in which the bandit
brandished an Uzi-type handgun and sometimes escaped on a
bicycle (see previous story).
Timothy Scott, 21, of the 4100 block of Ogden Street is charged
with two of the holdups so far -- one last Tuesday at the
Caprice Villa Bar, at 50th and Market Streets, and another the
following evening at a Pennsylvania state liquor store in the
4600 block of Lancaster Avenue.
Investigators say Scott had an accomplice in each of those two
robberies.
Scott is being charged with two counts each of robbery,
aggravated assault, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, and
weapons offenses.
The investigation continues as police work to tie Scott to
additional similar crimes in the area and to determine who may
have helped him in the heists.
