I've been thinkin' about all of this anti-J D stuff, and wanted to say it:
J D is OK.

Have you seen his excellent personal website?

http://community-2.webtv.net/LoDij/

It's pretty clear that J D is crazy about his daughter. She really is a
cutie. How can this guy be bad?
He loves nature, and shows us why. He makes reference to George Orwell
novels. He has photos of some sweeet bikes there. Those C-130 photos are
da bomb (literally).

Hey, stuff pisses J D off, and he dishes out the 'tude sometimes. He maybe
could do with some chill pills; but he's alright in my book. He has
something that a helluva lot of people lack: Passion. Better to state your
mind and be called wrong than to be a little scared mouse. I think J D
probably agrees.

I end with one of my favorite quotes:

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in
others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a
garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Looks like J D may have found the meaning of success.

Peace to my brotha, J D

The first time I posted on this ng, the first response was from JD. He started
out by calling me a "miserable TPer", and then went on to give valid advice.
Now, I can't remember what I said to give the impression that I was miserable
when I posted ;-), but I did top-post, so now I don't. I couldn't give a sh*t
where the replies are posted as long as we're consistent, so I just complied.
Not "lamely" or "wimpishly", but out of respect for an established system.
JD's advice was good, IIRC, and while I have never met him face-to-face, I
would consider him a friend if we did meet. I don't always agree with his
postings, and I'm damn sure he doesn't always agree with mine. Tough noogies on
both sides - we're both adult enough to deal with it.

Its not just anyone who will send a complete stranger, across the country, a
$100 dollar bike part (steerer tube and crown for a '99 Marzocchi.. yes, it
was used, but whats the dif?), asking only for a tshirt in return (and
recieving only 3 water bottles because until about a month ago, after asking
them if they had any and the guy going "no, but we should", there weren't
ANY tshirts from LBS's here within a 20 mile radius). Heck, he wouldn't
even let me pay for shipping (IIRC, I put some $$$ in one of the bottles to
cover it anyway, but I'm not positive on that one. Heck, if I'm wrong, JD,
tell me and it'll be out tomorrow morning!)

Heck, I've even posted picks of me on my Gary Fisher Kaitai getting jiggy
over stuff he could do on his SS in his sleep, and he didn't say anything.
Even when I just posted pics of the bike itself!

I'd be proud to call JD a friend any day.

Harrumph!

I just can't wait to get him out on some of the good at Bear Brook and
over to FOMBA.... if he wants "real" hills to keep him form getting
homesick, there is always the Bartlet Experimental Forest up in the
North Country.. or go way up to Jerrico Lake. Jeekers!

I'm constantly amazed at the attention given to one person on this
newsgroup. I did check out the website though and anyone who likes SRV has
one leg up on the rest of the world. He's the guy that got me started on
guitar and now I have 6 or 7 of them, like riding its an addiction. Anyway,
JD can be a real piss ant, he was to me the first time I posted. I really
don't give a rat's ass though, the reason I check this group from time to
time is because I love to ride and it can be a source of good info and
insight. And sometimes amusement...

Whether he can or not is irrelevant. I believe that mutual hatred and
grudges are built out of misunderstandings that compound one another. JD
pissed me off a few times, and I saw that I obviously wasn't alone, so I
wanted to find out what was up with this guy. Turns out he's OK: He served
our country for many years in the military, he's a loving and adoring
father, is a strong advocate for nature preservation and has a solid passion
for our favorite sport - cycling. So now when I see him being a little too
blunt, or a little too judgemental, I can see that in a new light. Maybe
instead of ripping him a new one, telling him what a jerk he is, I'll give
him a gentle reminder that sweet little mountain-biking girls like his
daughter Becca probably wouldn't like being treated that way, so why is he
treating his fellow cyclists that way? "Let he who is without sin..." and
all that.

In order to judge a person fairly, you need to endeavor to know them. Snap
judgements are unfair - even when judging those who themselves make snap
judgements. As my 3rd grade teacher taught me: "Two wrongs don't make a
right."

Someone in this thread commented that they were amazed how much time/effort
is being given to discussion about JD. Perhaps JD strikes a (dis)chord in
us: Perhaps he reminds us of ourselves when we're feeling angry and
narrow-minded. I think he's a great example of a human being, and we should
make him our brother, not our enemy.

And yes, I mean all of this sincerely.

JD comes across to me as honest (too often possibly), principled, passionate
and consistant. To me, these charactaristics combine to depict a good person
basically. JD may have made some "asking for it" remarks (in jest or not,
deserving or not), but I believe that adults should know how to deal with it
in more ways than one. And so far, all those posters who I've seen unable to
deal with JD's criticism have responded in the same way. Anger and spite. To
me, flames are acceptable as long as they remain subjective. But personal
attack remarks are simply despicable.

Anyway, although I don't know JD personally, Michael and John from "Over the
Edge Sports" Fruita, speak well of him that I feel I can believe considering
the honest and fair service I felt I received when renting their bikes and
asking them for some information. And the guys at "Over the Edge" do know of
the AM-B rubbish happenings. I may be wrong, but until proven so, I stand by
JD.

Cheers to B.Sanders for starting this thread.

PS: For inquiring minds, I eventually decided to miss Durango and ride in

Newington Cycle is alive and well. http://newingtonbike.com

A great shop that also happens to be a NEMBA supporter. My buddy won a

Nope, couldn't make it. I'm a full time HS student (Simsbury High School),
was working on college apps (wish me luck for Dartmouth!), and to top it
off, I'm on the Varsity Crew team. That means, every day, school from
7:00-2:00, crew from 2:00-5:30 or so, and then homework from 7:00-10:00.
Blech!

Anywho, I had a crew race last weekend (head of the riverfront, where they
had far too many boats for their staff to handle, and bad planning, and
ended up with COMPLETELY messed up results. For example, in the freshman
novice boys race, our frosh B boat won the race in the results. Its too bad
we scratched them BEFORE the race... but its still pretty impressive that a
boat that didn't race at all can win! That and a boat we passed (staggered
start, go off 20 secs between boats) ended up beating us by 15 seconds...
which is physically impossible. oh well.). Anywho, so, um, No :)

I was hoping to go to the Smashing Pumpkins race with the SHS MTB team, but
I've got a band thing and/or I'm heading up to Dartmouth.

If you're ever going to be doing a group ride at the Res, gimme a ring.. I'd
love to come, even though Id' slow everybody WAY the heck down!

Yeah, good luck from me , too. I tried for Dartmouth back in my youth (Oh, so

something that stuck in the mind. No success there, but it would have been a

I usually avoid any post with a statement about a person on this NG as the
subject, but I'll add to this one. Usually it's too much negativity in one
way or another, but I'll add to the positive vibe and chime in. He's a good
guy, who handles communication somewhat differently that I do (or would). He
reminds me of my brother, who can really piss people off, and doesn't care,
and is really a good person. That's the key. We've shared some good saddle
time, and I imagine we'll be riding again soon (gettin' pretty chilly up
here).

I will toast a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale to my friend JD tonight.

I never hit my nugget on the door of a C130. I did once on a CH46

I jumped with a airborne engineer unit down in Honduras, and they had some
kind of agreement with the locals that granted us Hondo jump wings. The
almost cool part was that the previous year, they actually jumped with the
Hondurans out of C-47s. Evidently, those doors are pretty small.
