It was a large gathering of some 25 people, both from Ride AZ and MTBR-AZ.
Group was rather diverse with half dozen ss (one full rigid), a couple of
people on downhill bikes, hardtails and FS. Four ladies joined the group
(thanks to Walt for organizing and keeping people on the right trail).

The first section was a gradual climb, nothing spectacular and I kept up
near the front of the group as the pace was set by the ss guys. Top of the
first climb and wait......lactic acid......then start again down some of the
funnest single track I've yet to ride in the Phoenix area. Lots of turns
and fast.

We waited again at the ramada....more lactic acid build up.....and off we
went on a gradual climb then some more fun descending where we stopped and
waited again.....ok....this f-ing lactic acid buildup in the legs is really
starting to piss me off as it takes me a good 10 minutes to get my legs
going again.

The last part of the ride is up to Sunrise point which is a 2 miles climb,
unrelenting and it's already 96F out. The rigid ss guy makes it to the top
first I believe as I'm bonking big time, pushing the bike more than riding.
WTF??? My strong point is my climbing ability but something just blew up
inside. I make it to the top with only two female riders behind me.
Overheated, slightly sick and the downhill coming up is steep, loose and
tagged with several switchback that if not ridden properly can spell
disaster for somebody in my condition.

The downhill is smooth, made up of crushed granite so braking is difficult
w/o locking up the rear wheel but I managed, coming down near the end of the
group.

A fast road ride back to the parking area and we were off to Chompie's for
breakfast/lunch.

I got home, crashed for several hours, ate dinner, watched Ransom for the
umpteenth time and went to bed at 9 so I could get up and ride again this
morning. Twenty-five miles later and two pissed off riding partners due to
my inability to get my legs to move properly after yesterday's bonk......but
Scott had three flats to make up for it. Good thing I carry two
tubes.......

Looks like a fit bunch there.

I did a metric century yesterday cause I just wasn't feeling the dirt love.

funny thing is.....I had never heard about these trails and they've been
around for some fifteen years. Guess I was out of the loop before!

Except for the long climb up Sunrise a ss would have been great, I just
would have bonked earlier.

actually, nothing for breakfast sans a Cliff bar then another just prior to
the climb. I don't do well riding after any food unless it has several
hours to go away.

Yes some were in great shape and I actually felt good through about 1/2 mile
of the climb then ??? I've had that experience a couple of times and
thought I was well nourished but........

You were on the bike, that's what counts.

Cool. Sounds fun (minus the bonk and heat).

I was feeling pretty hot on my rides over the weekend. It got into the

I'm old school and I could give a crap. PC is for others which is why I'm
constantly getting in trouble for my mouth!

on the other hand, all of the ladies on this ride put me to shame with their
technical abilities and usually smoke me on the DH sections.

I think the sexism element is in the eye of the beholder. I imagine he
didn't mean it in a demeaning way and the truth is, often (but not
always - I know some ladies who can kick my ass) men are faster than the
women. I think it was just an indicator of where he was in the group
which may not be his typical position.

Not the same at all. Saying "so and so is a woman" is a factual
statement. Saying I could only ride fast enough to beat 2 women, is
sexist (even if it was a fact that he did beat two riders, who happened
to be women). Here's a gauge: change the word female to blacks, or
Jews, or hispanics. Fact or racist/sexist statement ?

The way the sentence is written, and in the context of the Ride Report,
GD is saying he was having such a hard time that particular day that he
could only beat two (slow, crappy- inferred) women. That would be
considered sexist by most women I know.

Has Political Correctness gone awry ? In many cases, sure. But if you
you really think that question is moronic, your PC scale might need
some adjustment. Throw the statement around (in context) to several of
your female friends and see what they say. I know most of my female
friends would think it very sexist. You might be surprised.

I'm sure GD meant no offense by the wording and it was not malicious,
but intent is not always the test of a sexist or racist statement (e.g.
Fuzzy Zoeller re: Tiger Woods).

Maybe Carla or Penny care to weigh in.

"I make it to the top with only two first-timers behind me." Offensive
to first-timers?

You're psycho. Maybe Penny or Carla will be offended but none of my
female riding partners would be.

All I went by is the quote you provided (sans ANY context): {Hell, you've
snipped even THAT now. I'll go get it.}

"I make it to the top with only two female riders behind me."

If indeed he meant it the way you describe (no way to tell since you deleted
everything but that), then guess what -- you're still wrong. It's
/generally/ true that strong, healthy male riders will be somewhat faster
than strong, healthy female riders. It's not sexist; it's biological (and
biomechanical). Of course, some women are damned fast and strong and will
kick many males' asses. That's called...well, sexy as hell! (As well as
humbling.)

Unless there's more to this between you two than your post indicates, then
you're simply incorrect and way off base.

I see no need to quote an extensive RR report for one line. The report
was there to read. I think reading the report should be expected
before commenting on the context.

>"I make it to the top with only two female riders behind me."

Again, how he meant it is irrelevant. It is how is it perceived. That
is the standard question to be asked when
determining if a statement/action is sexist/racist/or can be perceived
as sexual harrassment (although
the latter is clearly not applicable here).

Humbling ? Why should it be ? Humbling because a RIDER is better than
me, yes. Humbling because a WOMAN is better than me...
Well, that's the crux of the argument, no ?

>Unless there's more to this between you two than your post indicates, then
>you're simply incorrect and way off base.

There is no animosity between myself and Gary (I hope), I certainly
hold none toward Gary or anyone else on the group. I thought he might
have missed his comment could be perceived as sexist. It does not say
anything about Gary as a person, for (as I said) a comment can be
sexist/racist without the person intending it to be so.

How about we agree to disagree ? And note, I never called anyone an
idiot, psycho, or any other derogatory term (although I will admit I
can see how someone might think I was calling Gary a sexist - I was
not, merely stating his statement might be construed as such.

I should have worded that differently.

I really can never understand why people immediatley resort to such
behavior instead of posing a friendly, rational, discussion.

After reading the replies by all, I guess I really should have said that
only two riders (no specifics as to who they were) were behind me at the
finish of the climb, not to mention the other 3 or 4 that turned back before
making the top. Then again, that's what gives me my charm.......

Well, I'll be there a year before the family comes. So for then it will
be in a crappy cheap apartment near the office (walk or bike).

I am looking at one of three towns right now: Golden (my choice),
Littleton, and Highlands Ranch. Each one of those would put me about 12
miles to the office and really close to trails (Golden offering backyard
access). Schools are an issue and even though Columbine got a bad rap
for what a few demented students did, it's still one of the best school
districts in the state and maybe even the country. That's one of the
things I am finding out in my research, that the Denver area school
systems are a cut above the rest (even compared to where I live now and
it ain't to shabby here).

Thanks for the ride report. I rode the Sunrise trail this morning and
was pleasantly surprised by a smooth singletrack with a nice
consistent climb. The view from the top is fantastic. (I left the bike
by the main trail and hiked up to the point.)

The ride was a shakedown for my new protective gear -- full face
helmet, and arm and elbow pads. Some of the photographs posted or
linked elsewhere on this forum have convinced me that even a good,
obviously agile rider takes a face plant once in a while.
