Stripped roads for re-paving and riding stability

Hi all,

I am a new rider and owner of a 2009 Fat Boy. I took the riders Edge
saftey course and received my endorsement last month. I have been
riding a good amount and expereinced a wierd situation last night. I
was riding home when I cam across some road construction in progress.
They had stripped down the exisiting road paving, leaving a sort of
grated surface with grooves in preparation for the fresh paving. When
I was flagged foward and began riding on the surface, it felt as if I
was riding on ice and my wheels were slipping all over the place. The
bike felt like it was sliding slightly from side to side across the
road which scared me from going any faster for fear of loosing
control. Has anyone else ever experrienced this and does anyone have
tips for controling the bike on this type of surface if it is
unavoidable?

You answered your own question.

Slow down enough so as to keep you and it under control under any
circumstance.

Let the bike "wander", and let YOU learn how you and it handles it.

Practice in nasty parking lots filled with ice, oil, pot holes, nails,
idiots, and strange children running amok!

describing will shove your tires around a little bit. Just relax,
keep a light hand on the bars, & let the centrifigal force of the
rotating wheels handle the small imputs. All you need to do is
maintain directional control....ie: keep it between the lines. You'll
get used to it as your experience level increases.
