6V-53DDEC 400HP Military "small footprint" two stroke 60degree V6 ~5
liter Diesel engine. These engines must prove them selves in lots by
running at the rated 400HP for 600 hours so they're nice reliable drag
engines as seen below with the RPM and boost pressure obviously up'd
(see link below)

Drag race with Ford F-250 with 500+HP two-stroke turbo Detroit Diesel
engine (note terminal speed at nearly 120MPH @ 11.70s). With drag
gearing this thing would be doing 11flat to high 10's.

A couple of stock examples of the relatively small 6V-53 (318 cu
inches~5liters) powering the modified truck in the link above. Notice
the opposite exhaust quad valve twin cam drives running high in the
block and turning in opposite directions. Push-rods are only 2-4" long
but the two stroke exhaust valves run one to one speed instead of half
speed like a four stroke engine. Intake is a huge webbed port at the
bottom of the piston stroke & feed by a plenum chamber in turn feed by
a roots blower in between the cylinder banks, These are called
normally aspired unless they have the bypass turbocharger up top. BYW,
theyt're closed crankcase like a four stroke engine.

An IH track with a 12V-71TT Diesel Tractor pull above. I don't know
the HP of this one but it's likely ~1500. BTW, these engine have been
around since 1935 in two valve & straight 6 configurations.(landing
craft in Saving Private Ryan) They've been used in Trains, boats,
Subs, heavy haulers and on-road truck until recently. Now their only
costumer is the Military. Thanks to GM dropping yet another profitable
ball. Example: M113 APC.

Pretty neat; thanks. I have to say that I don't quite understand why
it's a 1/6 scale engine (and it does appear to be approximately 1/6
the outside dimensions of a SB Chebby) but has a displacement of only
1.1 cubic inches.

Tim, either there's an error in translating the specs or the innards
are not to scale. But I've got some .9- cubic inch single cylinder RC
engines that are way smaller than that Chevy engine, so I think the
former is true and it really is 1/6 scale in displacement too. It may
be based on anything from a 265 to a 400SB. Prolly a 283.

According to the modeller's page (noted above) on that particular
model, it is a replica of the 327, which has an actual bore and stroke
of 4 inches by 3.75 inches, while the model has a bore of .600 inches
and a stroke of .487 inches. Here's what the modeler says about it:
"1/6th scale Chevrolet 327 cu in V8. Based on a 1964 365 hp Corvette
motor, measurements have been taken from an actual engine as to be
most accurate. The head and block began as billet aluminum that have
been painstakingly machined on a Bridgeport-style mill. The 5-main
crank has real babbit bearings, while the cam is a scale 30-30 Duntov.
Dies were developed for stamping out the front cover, oil pan and
rockers. The pistons and water pump housing are cast aluminum, and the
valve covers are going to be investment cast.
Since this engine is a runner, there is spark ignition, a pressurized
oil system and a cooling system just like its big brother
Right now the engine has been completed to the point that it will run
for brief periods of time. However, several things have yet to be
finished including the water pump/radiator, valve covers and
carburator to make this a full time running engine"

no, the 1/6 scale is *linear* measurements, so displacement will be much
smaller (volume of a cylinder = pi*r*r*h so if all dimensions are 1/6
the final displacement would by 1/216th) and then if material thickness
aren't exactly to scale, and the exterior is 1/6, then the interior
voids might be even smaller

This seems to be the case except your formula for displacement is PI X
the bore's radius squared X the stroke X the # of cylinders to get the
displacement in cubic inches then to convert to liters divide by 60.8.
Also Tim's 327 has a 3.25" stroke not a 3.75" stroke. SB Chevy's came
in the following sizes 265, 270 Canadian, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327,
350, 383 (aftermarket max 350 overbore) and the 400 SB with the two
middle cylinders Siamese'd Ford's Windsor (similar modern knock-off
smaller & with thinner-wall casting, etc) came in some similar
following sizes or 239, 260, 289, 302, 351. Some of these Chevy and
Ford engines had the same bore and stokes like the 302, 351 but the
Windsor was generally more over-square as in the 260 with a bore of 4"
and a stroke of 2 & 7/8th". The 283 & 289 may have also been the same
as well but I don't know that for sure. BTW, Ford's 351 with Cleveland
heads (much like the 396-454 Chevy big block with canted valves) was
based on the larger heavier Ford Modified Block but I had heard
stories that there were conversions for these heads to fit on the
lighter revier Windsor block? Ford also had another large block with
429-460 CU inches even one with a SOHC for racing. Also the original
poor design of Y-blocks OHV Fords from 239 to 312 cubic inches. And
Chevy's 1958 truck V8 with 348, & later 409 & finally 427 cu inches.
It was dropped in favor of the 396-427-454 engines mentioned
previously.
I had interests in old Chrysler & AMC based car/engines too but there
were so many versions including the Hemi's (both Chrysler & Dodge red
ram) that I've lost track of all of them. With the AMC's, Lincoln/
Mercury Cad, Olds, Buick& Pontiac & "ALL" size OHV V8's I haven't a
clue about.

my formula was volume of a single cylinder, and got a relative
adjustment, (1/216th) - if the model and the real engine have the
same # (1,4,6,8,12,16...) then the scale factor is the same so
you don't really care how many - so a perfect 1/6 scale of a 327
would be 327/216 or about 1.51 cubic inches
