My daughter is turning 4 soon.

I thought I would hire a clown to fill in a hour or so for her birthday
party.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek :( the cost !!! tis not cheap.

What I thought would be a good idea to pay someone else to keep kids
entertained for about 1 hour whilst I relax with the adults (whom are
attending at same time) so I could have a talk and get to know some of them.
Well, its not going to happen. I don't know how these people (clowns,
fairers, magician's, jumping castles etc) can demand or earn the amount of
money they do. I have to work a lot to pay them

Does anyone want to don on a clown suit and be stupid to keep the children
entertained for I hour. I would happily pay you $30 which is more
reasonable. I was expecting to pay about 50 to 60 maybe 65 dollars maximum.

I didn't think they would want 1 hundred dollars or more for that matter. I
have rang several and none of them were below the 1 hundred mark. I could
buy a weeks shopping and still have left overs. One of the clowns does 4
things (painting, puppets, magic and balloons) wanted $170, for 1 hour....
I hung up I didn't even let me finish telling me if he was available for the
date I need him. I would like to know what qualifications he has to earn
that money.. I think I am in the wrong career direction.

*sighs

Anyone else have a better or cheaper idea ?

Might reply with a real answer this time.. Baby fingers helped me post..

Have you got a toy library within your local library, my local library even
does party packs of bigger toys such as car roller coaster things for about
$40?? Sorry am not sure of the price as it has been awhile since I hired
them.. You will still need to supervise a little bit, but I found that the
excitement of new/different toys keeps them occupied for a while...

I will stop replying to myself soon.. I hired a couple of different packs
and that is why it was $40.. current fees for my library are at most $29 for
the weekend...

What their packs include are:

1. Junior Activity Gym and Rock-a-saur teeter totter
2. Junior Activity Gym and Whale Teetertotter
3. Treehouse climb 'n' slide, alligator teetertotter and up and down roller
coaster
4. Wave climber, alligator teetertotter and up and down roller coaster
5. Climb and slide castle, rock-a-saur teeter totter and up and roller
coaster
6. Pooh Play tree activity climber and tigger teetertotter..

See, you couldn't *pay me enough* to dress up like a clown and entertain a
bunch of little kids! They have the experience, I figure that's what they're
paid for.

Do nothing but let them run about for that hour.

I'm being serious (for a change).

We've done the whole routine of hiring clowns, forced-air bounce houses,
etc. The one party where the clown didn't show, is the one party the kids
still rave about. It was hell on SWMBO because she's so organized (serves
her right for marrying me) but she adapted and survived. You'll find letting
them run about is less hassle on you, your nerves, any schedule you'd
thought to maintain, and all the adults present will be able to sit back and
enjoy the party by talking.

when i was about 18 i did face painting at kids parties - i was not a clown
either! just me and my paints. i did it at some local events too.

you could get a responsible older teen to do face painting if they are
artistic or put on water tatoos. I used to do an hour for cheap.

If I lived around you I'd come to do face paintings, games and the like...
you could probably hire some teens to watch the wee ones for an hour for
$40....
