we would like to decorate our dd's bedroom and have finally settled on an
animal theme ... bright bold primary colours preferred - not anything too
pastely ...

we have the option of trying to paint it ourselves (lacking confidence here
!), going with stencils, murals, wallpaper/borders or stickers. we have
found plenty of websites with products we like but feel we should perhaps
give it a go ourselves to save the expensive of buying and make it more
personal for our dd (she might not recognise the animals mind you !)

however, before we decide, we wondered if anyone has decorated on this theme
or one like it and has purchased on line. does anyone have any on-line
recomendations with bookmarked links ? tia

Hmmm, does she have a favorite book with animals? (I'm thinking The Very
Hungry Caterpillar, etc...)
you could perhaps trace some of the ones she really likes onto
transparencies, then use an overhead projector to put them on the walls to
trace.

Bugs are easy and cute...ladybugs, caterpillars, butterflies, and fireflies
(glow in the dark!) and fun to paint. Easy enough, too. Find clip art and
blow it up!
Or get an inexpensive stencil and use it over and over with different color
combinations.

What kind of animals were you thinking about?

And to follow up myself....have you ever seen the site www.decoratetoday.com
? Go to the wallpaper/border part and then just put in "animals" for your
keyword and more cute stuff than you can shake a stick at will pop up! Just
,ahem, decide what you like and copy it freehand. There are lots of simpler
line drawing type things that would be easy to do at home.

It's been my experience that purchasing borders and decorations can be quite
costly.
If you guys stick with the primary color scheme, that will be easy for the
painting part of it.
Then you can find pics on the web, or in books and print them out, or have
them copied, and decoupage
those to the walls.
That way you can personalize the decorations more to suit L's favorites :-)
I don't have any bookmarks to share, but I'll bet you can find some good
pics pretty easily.

I don't have specific url's but I think what you are doing is wonderful. I
would look in a magazine or library book on decorating a bedroom
specifically childs room and you may get simple ideas that could lead you to
buying paint and going for it. I have no talent whatsoever but I love to do
the personal touch thing.

have you seen that magnetic paint - that would be fun for a section, then
she can stick up some magnets like letters or whatever....

Crayola also makes chalkboard paint, you can use it just like a
chalkboard....be fun at her height!
Paint a happy border around it or frame it in....build a little box for
chalks and erasers and attach it to the wall....
B

Not to be a busy body, but one fun thing that I did in our old playroom, and
now have in Clare's room is the lucite box frames, I have her big window
outlined in them, and she puts her original art in the frames....matted with
different colors of construction paper to complement the
drawing/painting/photos. Usually about 6$US for a 12 X 18 inch frame, easy
to change out, come in lots of sizes...
Beth....
(I also look in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog for good ideas, they have
precious things that are do-able on your own)

butting out now...;-)

We just did our DS's room with a wild animal theme. I couldn't really
find stencils or big stickers that I liked, so here's what I did. We
painted 3 walls green (a medium shade, not pastel but not too deep
either) and one wall and accents yellow. I found some corrugated
cardboard animal shapes in the scrapbooking section of a craft store,
bought like 5 packages, and used those every 12 or so inches around
the top as a border. I made the curtains, as I found material that
was primarily green with wild animals in bright contrasting colors
(the window is on the yellow wall, so the fabric is perfect). The
rest of the decorations are simple store-bought stuff -- a poster of
wild animals from a poster store, an ABC poster with wild animals from
my teaching days, and even some stuffed animals tacked to the walls.
Maybe this is more than you wanted to know, but I hope this helps!

I've always decorated with fairies, so no great insights into primary
coloured animals.... but I have heard some people use wallpaper glue to
stick cut outs from printed fabric to their walls. Apparently it works well
and is removable when you tire of it.

i agree nan ... the accessories are a bit pricey and we want to save if we
can by doing it ourselves - its just a confidence thing with us. we did do
as you suggest and saw some great jungle art work at one of the kids play
places. we sat and copied what we saw - the monkey, hippo, toucan, grass,
palm tree foliage etc and it looked pretty good, made a note of all the
colors used etc but when we got home we got daunted by it all ! I like the
idea of decoupage which we hadn't considered - more food for thought for us
:-)

yeah anni .. its the lack of talent that worries us .... mind you sandi did
some drawings last night with her felt tip pens and it really looks pretty
good, but transfering this onto the large canvas of a wall is a bit scary!

maybe we should just go for it !

i bet the boys love their room shell ! sandi is considering making some wall
hangings as she has a heap of coloured felt in amongst her sewing stuff. i
picked up some realy brightly coloured bugs at subi markets and they hang
down on long springs and bounce back and forth - they are pretty cool but
not sure how long they will last. i also got some bug window stckers -
rainbow coloured dragonflies and honey bees ...

printer is stuffed and we is pretty skint :-( i can ask my brother to help
tho .... some animals are easy such as a snake or caterpiller or ladybug. i
did actually start out wanting an insect/bug theme but sandi thinks its
easier to do animals and we couldn't find a buggy quilt cover ... we will
probs end up doing a mix ... as many easy creatures as we can paint ...oh
the fear of failure tho ! we should just let our imagination make up for our
lack of talent ... poor livvy is going to have to put up with this room for
a good few years so we don't want to totally stuff it up for her :-)

this is a great idea ... thankyou, thanyou thankyou ! sandi is going to ask
our dd's daddy who is a uni lecturer if we can temp borrow one of their
projectors. I like this idea coz its the drawing of the animals that worries
us - obviously the colouring in is the easier or should i say more fun part.

We did actually start out wanting a bug theme - i have had this idea of a
large alternate brightly coloured segmented caterpiller going all around her
room - how hard can that be i said to sandi, i have every confidence in you
i said but she wasn't so sure ... she draws a beaut charicature of a monkey
so a caterpiller should be easy, no ;-) i mentioned the clip art to her
and she said we have a cd and she is going to look into that option too.

oh beth ... we have dreamt of dd's bedroom every night this week and gotten
ourselves more confused and daunted. We even said lets just go with a
orange/purple pooh theme, buy the quilt cover and some paint and be done
with it. we agree thats a cop out tho (not that there's anything wrong with
a pooh theme) if you know what i mean. so .... you have been very helpful
already and if its okay, we have you on standby mode for further assistance
as we go .. thanks :-)

no, the more input the merrier :-) your ds's room sounds great - I like the
idea of using the cardboard shapes as stencils for the border - very
resourceful .. and the curtains sound great too ... we haven't thought about
our window (seat) yet but the current fabric will need changing. we actually
saw something we are going to try to copy ... green grass at the bottom of
the walls, yellow colour as a backdrop to the animals in the middle, up to a
green foliage canopy at the top of the walls, a tree or two complete with
monkeys (our dd's fav animal), a few animals looking up over the grass, a
giraffe in the center, a snake and some brightly coloured parrots in the
trees as well.

wish us luck ... i think we might need it!

not a silly idea either .. the shops are full of fairy/butterfly
accessories so that would make this a good theme to tackle. it might be
something we will consider when dd is older, if she wants it that is ...
i'm sure her room will be so bright & colorful when we have finished and she
