appreciated.

Hobby Surplus Sales has plastic and wood ship kits, but most are 1/350,
1:700 to 1:720.

I don't recall seeing any N scale container ships or cruise ships.
Assuming a length of 900 ft., that would be over 5-1/2 ft. in N scale.
I believe Walthers has a printed background with a freighter in the
scene.

Biggest problem is the hull, all those curves ate the sharp and blunt ends.
At a pinch you could use the Eastern Models (formerly Novo, originally Frog)
kit of the Shell Welder coastal tanker as a 'feeder ship' - Big job though,
it would look better extended in length, the accomodation block would need
to be replaced with a taller one, allowing containers to be stacked three
high on the deck (its a lot more complicated than that, but you will see
examples of hatch cover mountings and cellular ships when you google for
container ships. The kit represents a coastal tanker, the prototype was
later converted into a bulk carrier (add hatches on the deck, replacing the
three raised sections). Those options are a better bet than a container
ship. To cut the hull down glue it to the provided stand, use a block of
wood with a nail driven through it to mark the water-line, cut along that
with a razor saw.

Other kits that can be used include the Revel North Sea Trawler and
Lightship - I made a nice little coastal steamer (c1930s) from one a while
back.

Noch offer tug boats and barges, IIRC the barge is an HO kit (just dont use
the supplied fittings) and the tug was I think available in HO and N (not
too sure on that though)
