Gold in Cunningham Falls State Park? & NH gold

I've been away for a long time and have been thinking about New Hampshire
gold. Been up there this year?
Well, this fellow rock hunter at work said he was just visiting Cunningham
Falls State Park and mentioned that they used to have a gold mine there-
along with the whiskey still too. There are a few streams in the area, one
has a nice waterfall that you can hike into. Have you heard of anyone
panning here?

Interesting, I'll see if I can find out anything. Usually prospecting
is a no-no in State Parks.

Is this near Thurmont Maryland? There are various mineral deposits in
that area, copper in particular. I wouldn't think gold would be so
far off either.

Yes, this park is near Thurmont Maryland. Route 15 near there has a number
of little streams that may have some gold.
Thanks for the link to the gold brocure. It is very informative. I saved
it for future reference. I had come accross this brochure years ago and
made a few trips into Md. The northern Great Falls sites seemed to be all
housing developments. I did explore along the northern bank of the Potomac
and found a few specks. After I learned about the park at Scott's Run it
was my main spot to go. Last year I went a couple of times and met some
other gold panners there to swap notes with.

Yes, although I did find a few specks under a couple bridges. You are
hard to see there. :-)

I went upstream of the bridge there. I don't think you are supposed
to pan in the park itself.

The signs say no metal detecting or relic hunting, but don't mention gold
panning. Last year I met about 3 different gold panners and asked them if
they were ever discouraged from panning and none of them were. I believe
it's a county park, not state or federal. I first found out about it from
the internet, so people have been panning for years. Not that any of this
means that it is OK to prospect there. Whether panning is allowed or not
it's a very pretty park to visit and hike. Have you hiked down to the falls
at the river? I've had my wife and daughter a couple of times to hike.
I have gone past the bridge also, but haven't found much there. It was
sure fun looking. Nothing like playing around in a stream, as long as it
isn't too cold. But when I have the gold fever I've been known to pan even
in November. A few years ago I was panning in Buffalo Creek in lower
Vermont. It wasn't crowded at all. Wonder why? I had rubber boots on and
used neoprene gloves. You had to keep the pan in the water to keep it from
freezing.

If there's a big ol' .54 caliber minnie ball around there it could end
up in yer pan.

I found some flakes up there by a big bamboo grove, as well as a .22
caliber slug.

I had stopped by the State Park there on my way to some other spots.
Dodn't pan, but I should try it later.
