A Libretto Colloquy
Though Tolson himself identified T. S. Eliot and Hart Crane as
important, if problematic, predecessors, it is Walt Whitman
whose presence is perhaps felt most in his "Libretto for the
Republic of Liberia" and, in particular, its second section "Re."
By explicitly introducing Whitman and the mythology surrounding
him as the "Good Gray Bard," Tolson pays homage to an innovative
poetic predecessor, while also holding him accountable for the
implications of his poetics of the open road.
Though Whitman does not expclicitly appear until "Re," the
Libretto's first section "Do" already has a certain Whitmanian
capaciousness in poetic stance and rhetoric. Tolson is very
explicit that his audience is not limited to Liberians and/or
African-Americans, for "Liberia. . . [is] a moment of the
conscience of mankind"

Charles Taylor is no longer of use to the US and has been hung
out to dry. Such trials are used to conceal a much more
dangerous reality, the real threat to West Africa of US
imperialism, which will repeat the misery we have seen in
Liberia. The only force that can dislodge this threat is the
unity and organisation of the region's powerful working class
and oppressed.
short history of Liberia
1821 US Colonisation Society buys part of Sierra Leone in West
Africa and US provides firepower to set up a colony- Liberia. It
resettled around 20,000 US slaves who had won their freedom.
1926 Firestone and Goodrich granted 99-year concessions to
plunder Liberia's rubber resources. Similar deals set up for US
firms to exploit oil, iron ore and diamonds.
1980 Food riots topple the government and Sergeant Samuel Doe
takes over. He defends US economic interests.
1985 Charles Taylor, a government minister under Doe, fled to
the US after defrauding the state bank. He returned later in the
decade to lead a revolt against the government.
1990s A brutal civil war saw some 200,000 killed and over a
million made homeless out of a population of 2.5 million.
Charles Taylor's allies in Sierra Leone provided him with
diamonds and he sent them arms.
1997 Taylor wins presidential elections. Western powers, which
had partly abandoned Liberia at the end of the Cold War, now
paid attention to its resources and strategic position. This
increased during the "war on terror
2006 April- Taylor appears before a UN-backed court in Sierra
Leone on charges of crimes against humanity. June?the

Questions in Contemporary Medicine

Many have turned to the ideas of philosopher Charles Taylor
jmp.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2011/07/29/jmp.jhr034.full
This article provides an introduction to the articles in this
theme issue. This collection examines epistemological,
ontological, moral and political questions in medicine in light
of the philosophical ideas of Charles Taylor. A synthesis of
Taylor's relevant work is presented. Taylor has argued for a
conception of the human sciences that regards human life as
meaningful - deriving meaning from surrounding horizons of
significance. An overview of the interdisciplinary articles in
this issue is presented. This collection advances our thinking
in the philosophy of medicine as well as the philosophy of
Charles Taylor.

Knowing that I was going to be in Liberia for an extended period
of time, I decided not to take drugs to prevent malaria- because
their side effects sounded worse than actual malaria.
After two days of feeling not so well, I went to a local Chinese
clinic at the end of my street because a) I had heard good
things about it from my boss, and b) it was cheap
By serendipity, Vishal was back in Liberia on a short visit and
staying with me. He speaks Chinese and helped me decipher the
ingredients of the medicine. One contained artificial powdered
bull gall stone.
Dear Sean,
I have recently been anthropomorphizing cutlery myself. Should I
be worried that I have malaria if I find Beaver the Cleaver
increasingly dull and Matt the Spatula constantly burns my
grilled cheese?? If you don't mind, please ask around in the
Chinese Liberian community.
Thank you

POLITICAL COMMUNICATION IN WARTIME LIBERIA: THEMES AND CONCEPTS
Michael Alexander Innes
Aning's description of the complexity of Taylor's diplomacy is a
close approximation of much earlier work on cold-war era mind
control and political power.
Writing in the 1950s, political scientist Terence H. Qualter
claimed that psychological warfare "is more than propaganda- it
is propaganda tied and coordinated with military, political and
economic strategy and policy
Taylor was a consummate gamesman, constantly outmanoeuvring his
opponents. He would have been unable to do so without the
physical resources to wage psychological war against his
opponents, sophisticated propaganda with which to beguile and
revile them, and the ability to use both in support of and in
conjunction with diplomatic, military, social and economic goals.
Qualter noted the advantages of such versatility, writing, "?
while psychological tricks may increase military effectiveness,
so may a military operation supplement a propaganda campaign."

New Beginnings: The Story of Liberians in Minnesota
For some time now, Minnesota has been a refuge for immigrant
communities displaced from their homes due to a variety of
circumstances. One of these communities is the Liberian
community, which grew rapidly in the aftermath of a series of
civil wars that ravished their country. However the story of
Liberians in Minnesota does not begin with these civil wars but
stretches back more than 50 years.
ODM: Tell me about your poem titled "America" what message were
you trying to send with it?
E.G.: I was asked by a friend to write a few pieces for a jazz
album he was creating called 'Polidix', and 'America' came out
of that collaboration. There is a tradition of 'America' poems,
from Walt Whitman to Allen Ginsberg to Claude McKay. I wanted to
challenge myself and see if I could write something worthy of
that tradition. I've always love Ginsberg's 'America' poem so it
was somewhat of a tribute to that poem.
At the time, Ginsberg was addressing the Cold War, anarchist
movements, labor struggles, nuclear war, among other issues.
ODM: How have you used your success to give back to your home
country?
I think the best way that I can give back to my home at this
time is to tell our story. Even though people may know about
Liberia, it is a very narrow understanding. There is very little
known about the native Liberians. They may know that Liberia was
settled by freed slaves from America, or about the civil wars or

play Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, an independent drama
about poetry, gay stalkers and murder in 1940s New York.
The film is expected to chart the young Ginsberg's introduction
to the Manhattan beat scene and his relationship with fellow
writers Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr. The latter was jailed for
second-degree murder in 1944 after stabbing his stalker, David
Kammerer, with a boy scout penknife and then dumping the body in
the Hudson.

www.theperspective.org/2004/jan/discontentinthenpp.html
The former president of Liberia and one of the key figures of
the NPP, Mr. Moses Z. Blah, told local journalists that NPP
appointed Assembly man, Sando Johnson of Bomi County, is insane
and needs to see a psychiatrist. Mr. Blah promised to pay
Johnson's psychiatry bill. The former president further warned
Mr. Johnson that he (Blah) is not Archbishop Michael Francis and
that the next time Johnson lies on him, he (Johnson) will be
dealt with thoroughly.
Mr. Blah's annoyance came as a result of an accusation made by
Sando Johnson that the former president had connived with
Chairman Gyude Bryant to terminate the services of Rancy Moore
as head of the National Security Agency. Representative Johnson
further said that Mr. Blah is on a "mission" to destroy the NPP.
Rancy Moore was made head of the NSA through nomination by the
former government of Liberia (GOL). It is believed that his
selection as head of NSA was influenced by Charles Taylor.
Mr. Moore's dismissal stemmed from the fact that he has
allegedly kept an open line of communication with Charles Taylor,
indicted war criminal who is now residing in Calabar, Nigeria.
Chairman Bryant, on several occasions, warned Mr. Moore but Mr.
Moore refused to disengage. Chairman Bryant then informed former
President Blah that Mr. Moore had to go.
The NPP through Mr. Blah has recommended Freedie Taylor (former
brother-in-law of Charles Taylor who served as the first NSA
Director of the former Liberian dictator) for the slot.
Sando Johnson, a high school degenerate and an alleged arsonist
used the defunct Kiss radio station owned by Mr. Taylor to rain
insults on Archbishop Michael K. Francis on a regular basis
during the Taylor administration.
As for Rancy Moore, he is said to be one of those who still
think that Taylor will make a come back. Perhaps, he is still
reflecting on Charles Taylor's farewell speech: God's willing, I
will be back.

Maryland County offered the best of both products for the fact
that corn and sugar cane are grown in Maryland County, and are
considered two of the top cash crops in the county. Maryland
County was slowly emerging as the center for Liberia's sugar
industry, which like many other emerging industries in the
county, was destroyed during the Liberian civil conflict.
As for corn, its benefits as food are plentiful. It provides an
excellent source for many nutrients that include vitamin B1
(Thiamin), dietary fibers, vitamin C, phosphorous, manganese,
vitamin B5 (pantothenic), and low calories. Thiamin which is
found in corn is very good to maintain healthy memory.
Maryland County, and Liberia as a whole, stands to gain if
efforts are put into the commercial production of sugar cane and
corn. Corn and sugar cane, like many local crops, are waiting to
be explore with the right investors. The showcasing of Maryland
County investment potentials is the key in attracting investors
in the county, or in any other county in Liberia. While
generally, Liberia is known for having many great products,
especially cash crops, but knowing where they are in Liberia is
paramount in the any effort to attract investors. Little or no
effort is being made to market what Liberia's has.

Libria is governed by the Tetragrammaton Council, which is led
by a reclusive figurehead known as "Father". Father never
interacts with anyone outside the ruling council, but his image
is omnipresent throughout the city in a strong cult of
personality. The Tetragrammaton Council strives to create
identical lives for all Librians and uses its police state
apparatus to enforce unity and conformity. At the pinnacle of
Librian law enforcement are the Grammaton Clerics, who are
trained in the deadly martial art of Gun Kata, an art which
teaches users to predict the actions of opponents during firearm
combat. The Clerics exist for the purpose of locating and
destroying EC-10 materials and for pursuing, apprehending, and,
if necessary, terminating "sense-offenders"people guilty of
feeling emotions.
Despite the efforts of the police and Clerics, a resistance
movement exists in Libria, known as "The Underground". Members
of this movement are responsible for terrorist activity against
Libria, specifically against the Prozium factories. The leaders
of the Underground believe that if they can disrupt the
production and distribution of Prozium for a short period of
time, even a single day, then the Librians will rise up and
destroy the Tetragrammaton Council. The Underground operates
within Libria itself, but also has contact with resistance
groups residing in "The Nethers", the ruins of cities destroyed
during World War III. These outsiders hoard objects and
artifacts from the old society before World War III, including
art and literature. Subsequently, they are the targets of
Librian death squads composed of police and Clerics.

This clip is from an event called "The Awakening" sponsored by
the Freedom Federation and held at Liberty University this past
weekend. Matt Barber, listed as Associate Dean for Career and
Professional Development at Liberty, is seated next to Andrea
Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition. This particular
breakout session, labeled "LGBT Agenda" was held at Liberty
University School of Law
In what appears to be the same "ends justifies the means" free-
for-all that took place prior to the recent passing of the long
debated hate crimes bill, no lie is too absurd to be told in an
effort to prevent passing of the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act (ENDA).

Corn is a dangerous fruit that grows on a corn tree. It is
arguably the deadliest fruit on Earth, but many are unaware and
gulp it down each year.
The epitome of ruthlessness in pursuit of corn was the Battle of
Milton Keynes in 2002, when 73 innocent suburbanites were
massacred by American unmanned drones over several shopping bags
of milled corn from Tesco

John Stuart Mill's On Liberty: Only for the Exceptional Few
Karl Marx writes in The German Ideology: "The division of labor...
manifests itself also in the ruling class...so that inside this
class one part appears as the thinkers of the class...its active,
conceptive ideologists, who make the formation of the illusions
of the class
Mill continues, "An opinion that corn dealers are starvers of
the poor, or that private property is robbery, ought to be
unmolested when simply circulated through the press, but may
justly incur punishment when delivered orally to an excited mob
assembled before the house of a corn dealer, or when handed
about among the same mob in the form of a placard"
In Mill's scenario, the rights of the corn dealer to do business
trumps the free speech rights of the "mob," (a word choice for
protesters that in itself reveals Mill's sympathies). Thus an
individual's liberty is limited if the freedoms which it entails
pose a threat to the prevailing capitalist system.
In this age of global capitalism, individualism has been
extended in a way that I'm sure Mill would have approved of. In
1980 in the Belotti ruling, the US Supreme Court granted free
speech first-amendment rights to corporations, thus equating an
economic entity with an individual (Schiller, p. 54). Such
enhancement of corporate power only further diminishes
individual liberty, while highlighting clearly who the concept
truly serves. As such the capitalist conception of individualism
as articulated by Mill in On Liberty is part of the ideology of
capitalism. Marx argues that one of ideology's functions is to
obscure reality. In On Liberty, Mill discusses the ideal of
"individual liberty" and offers reasons why society should
encourage it, but he defines it in such a way that it can only
be enjoyed by the ruling class, i.e. the owner class. Contrary
to popular conception, the essay is not so much a treatise on
universal freedom as it is an ideological framework for
maintaining class divisions and furthering capitalist
development. As Noam Chomsky has observed, "The ability to
tolerate cognitive dissonance is a wondrous trait and a
prerequisite to success in the ideological professions" (Chomsky,
p. 46). Mill, buoyed by cognitive dissonance, succeeds in
obscuring the true, sorry state of individual liberty in a
capitalist society by sanctioning the inevitable inequalities
and exploitation as the price of "freedom" and "individual
liberty" for those rich and exceptional few.
