Brother: Military Training Saves Kidnapped Marine's Life

(EXCERPT) The twin brother of a Marine who was bound, gagged, and held
captive for 12 hours credits military training for saving his
brother's life.

Derrick McDaniel, 25, stopped to help a woman early Monday who
appeared to be stranded on Loop 1604 near Military Drive after he saw
a baby seat on the hood of a car.

Moments after McDaniel got off his car to see if he could help, two
masked gunman handcuffed him at gunpoint and forced him to a remote
location near Camp Bullis.

"He's too nice of a guy," Frederick McDaniel, the victim's brother,
said Wednesday in an exclusive interview with KSAT 12 News. "He can't
just leave someone on the side of the road."

Derrick McDaniel's captors set him free 12 hours later after the
suspects threatened to shoot him because he saw their faces. McDaniel
escaped to a nearby home where the homeowner called police.

Frederick McDaniel said his brother survived the ordeal because of his
special forces training with the Marines.

"Most people would have freaked," Frederick McDaniel said. "But he
said he stayed calm and conserved his energy and remembered his
training."

Frederick McDaniel said he called police after he was notified that
his brother's vehicle was found stripped.

"They (police) made a bunch of suggestions like maybe he ran for the
border... maybe he was afraid to go overseas. I was like, 'No, there's
something wrong.'"

Derrick McDaniel is back on base while police continue their
investigation.
